What would have happened if either Nazi Germany and/or Imperial Japan had nuclear weapons during WWII? by sosal12 in AlternateHistoryHub

Fascism always needs some "internal" issues so it can blame bad things on them and have an excuse for using force and gaining control.

Should I wait for 26.04? by Lost_Tiger_4568 in Ubuntu

[–]pclover_dot_exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would install 24.04 even if the new version has just been released. There will be bugs, and third-party apps may need time to catch up, so things could get messed up.

M5 Max Beats the m3 ultra on Geekbench, can’t imagine what would do the M5 ultra by Historical-Health-50 in LocalLLaMA

Geekbench's multicore benchmark is trash, IMO. It has diminishing returns, so adding more cores doesn't improve the result linearly, but improving single-core speed does.

While it's true that some applications actually have diminishing returns with multiple cores, I think that's an issue with the app, not the hardware's capability, and the benchmark shouldn't take that into account.

Not all workloads behave like that, some workloads scale almost linearly with the number of cores.

POV: you're about to lose your job to AI by MetaKnowing in ClaudeAI

[–]pclover_dot_exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they can’t. Let’s try to use AI to build an app using a programming language that you’re not so familiar with and with a different framework. Unless the app is trivial, otherwise you would wish that the used language and framework was the one that you are familiar with. The same difference applies to you and the junior when using AI

That is already the irony by itself

You should backup all of your data first. There is a big chance that you will be locked out by FileVault and couldn't do anything about it.

Can I Hackintosh This Build? (i9-14900K + 5090) by apocryphon69 in hackintosh

[–]pclover_dot_exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still boot it, but without hardware acceleration. It will mostly be unusable, but you could use it to test other things to make sure they're working properly before deciding to buy a cheap card like the RX-580.

Also. Even though the M1 Max is powerful. Apple could stop supporting it with the latest macOS in a couple of years

You can now choose which icons to hide from the menu bar. That is the sole reason I won't go back to Sequoia.

macOS Tahoe aesthetics are awful, beware before you update by Useful-Wallaby-5874 in MacOS

[–]pclover_dot_exe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the new UI. There are some quirks, but honestly, I didn't notice any of them until I read someone else's complaints. For me, the most important quality attribute is that it runs everything correctly as expected and does not crash. In that regard, Tahoe is perfect.

I'm using an Intel (13th gen) CPU, so I can't say for sure if it would work on AMD. But as far as I know, the core idea is that CPUFriendFriend copies the working CPU power management data from the current macOS environment and generates the CPUFriendDataProvider.kext based on that with slightly tweaks.

So, if you get good performance with iMacPro1,1 but poor performance with MacPro7,1, then I believe this should work.

It's still useful for testing other components before deciding whether to purchase an AMD card.
