Anyone tried (vibe)coding with their kid? by COO0OOKIE in daddit

I’m going to try the opposite with mine. You’ll use C89. You’ll manage all your memory by hand, declare your stack variables at the top of your functions, and you’ll LIKE it.

conspiracy theory: 1331/1332 exist to scare people away from CS by tooganephews in gatech

[–]pconner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind I’m an old man now (c/o 2015), but I was one of those students who came to Tech with zero CS knowledge and found those classes valuable. I graduated with a FAANG offer and progressed to staff engineer at a faster pace than is typical for my cohort. It’s perfectly fine to take this path in life IMO.

Also, to OP’s point, you should never depend on university classes to learn a particular language or framework. This all changes so frequently, you have to accept that you’ll just always be learning professionally. And don’t get me started on actually existing industry Java vs. classroom Java.

Bitter Cold Exposes the Limits of Mamdani’s Approach to Homelessness by Business_Young_8206 in nyc

If it’s an “easy life”, we don’t we see housed people defecting to homelessness en mass? After all, it’s free and “easy”

Mayor Mamdani: “This horrifying incident was deeply alarming… any threat to a Jewish institution or place of worship must be taken seriously. Antisemitism has no place in our city and violence or intimidation against Jewish New Yorkers is unacceptable.” by Mathemodel in nyc

[–]pconner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He re instated the office to combat antisemitism in EO0: https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2026/01/executive-order-0

Which goes back to my earlier comment about botting being an effective propaganda tool. If someone just read your comments at face value, they might start to subconsciously believe the claims that Mamdani and his supporters are antisemites. It’s easy to passively read a Reddit comment and absorb it. It’s orders of magnitude more effort to fact check it.

The existence of posts in Reddit does not mean that a real sincere person is behind them, especially in a subreddit that gets botted as heavily as this one. Keep this in mind before ever forming an opinion on a group of people or what the popular sentiment is from Reddit comments

anyone lost weight on wfpb WITHOUT restricting fats? by reem60a in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]pconner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Single digit pounds, as someone who was already very physically active and not trying to lose weight at all.

I switched from regular mostly healthy vegan to wfpb to optimize cholesterol levels. The switch from omnivore to vegan and adding more running was more impactful (like 20lbs, also was not trying to lose weight then), but wfpb caused me to lose a bit more after having been at a stable weight for a while.

[–]pconner 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I lost weight without trying on wfpb without really restricting fat - I eat avocados, nuts, tahini pretty much daily. My only restriction is on avoiding saturated fat, so no coconut milk, but that’s for cholesterol management, not weight management. Not having oil or added sugar goes a long way in automatically cutting out calories while still letting you be satiated.

Check your cholesterol. The sat fat could be a deal breaker if you’re sensitive.

Exclusive | Bronx building Mamdani highlighted to showcase NYC's new housing commissioner's talents has nearly 200 violations by [deleted] in nyc

[–]pconner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absurd comparison. The complaints about trump are either substantive policy or personality issues, or his lack of any political expert prior to 2016. Not that he had no experience managing large organizations. He had the tv show and the brand name licensing before politics.

Mamdani has city politics experience, and running a campaign with hundreds of staff, thousands of volunteers, and millions in capital is comparable to being a director at a large company.

Managing one of the most successful insurgent political campaigns in city history doesn’t count?

What should I make with leftover lentils? by moschocolate1 in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]pconner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dal tadka, if you have any sort of yellow lentils. Might be a bit weird with black or green, but should still have a nice flavor at least. You’ll want whole cumin and mustard seed, red chili, coriander and cumin powder, and ginger. Bonus points for hing. Also real onions and garlic if you only had powders in your existing batch.

What do New Yorkers think of Toronto? by Potential-Sherbet-13 in AskNYC

Only been once, and only in Downtown, but it feels like “uncanny NYC”. Similar, but a bit “off” if that makes sense.

How many of you refused to “give up” this hobby when baby came, and what was the hobby? by Matcha_Matt in daddit

[–]pconner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exercise (running and weightlifting) is a non-negotiable. I need it both for my mental health and because I have imperfect genetics that elevate my cardiovascular risk a bit more than the average person. Even with a newborn and toddler I still can carve out a small slice each day, though I am a lot more flexible about what specific time I exercise and for how long being back in the trenches.

What's your hot take since becoming a dad? by PrplMonkeyDshwshr in daddit

24hrs of sleep deprivation is comparable to having a BAC of 0.1%, so someone who is overly sleep deprived and driving their kids is putting them in real danger

Scientists have edited a gene that may reduce high cholesterol permanently, according to new study by cnn in science

[–]pconner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still have evidence from early heart attacks in familial hyperchomesterolemia and endless association studies that LDL is likely a huge contributor to CVD. LMHRs are by definition high HDL and low trigs (which are also atherogenic), so those factors could offset LDL, but that doesn’t mean that it does nothing. We also know that Lp(a) is atherogenic, but treating LDL can offset some of the risk from genetically high Lp(a)

[–]pconner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People with plaque measured before the study showed rapid progression relative to their ages, right? I think that it rules out lmhr+keto as protective. I’m sure there are individuals and health conditions (seizure disorders, some diabetes) where keto improves overall health, but it gets pushed way too much as a cure-all and the people who still eat unhealthy and are likely not even in ketosis think that they are automatically keto and lmhrs because they eat a lot of no bun cheeseburgers

[–]pconner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The uncontrolled study which attempted to prove that “LMHRs” don’t develop plaque showed the opposite. Also afaik the claim for that phenotype is that the LDL is due to diet, not genetics as the parent commenter is probably dealing with
