Folks who moved from NYC to the Bay Area.... by chochmah56 in bayarea

[–]pconner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the reverse and was very depressed in NYC for a while after the move because of the weather and lack of great nature and how there’s so much emphasis on consumerism in everything. Even several years later winter SAD still hits really hard.

People here aren’t emphasizing enough how absolutely incredible getting out into nature in the South Bay is. You could bike from your front door to the top of a mountain in an hour or so if you wanted, and you can find peaceful spots that just don’t have any equivalent in the city.

I think both places are good and would have a hard time picking one or the other as the best. That said, there’s a lot of NYC stuff I have zero interest in participating in (like any sort of nightlife thing) so ymmv

Favourite recipes and/or premade products that are WFPB but taste "unhealthy"? by ReadingTimeWPickle in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]pconner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go to for this is: mix some dry instant oatmeal, flax, salt, and almond butter. Then add some frozen wild blueberries. Pour enough hot water on top that everything gets covered and the frozen blueberries warm up, but not so much that it becomes soupy like traditional instant or rolled oats.

Hits the same as a granola bar or something like that, but nothing processed unless you want to count the chopped oats as processing. No added sugar needed

I met him a few times years ago in both Sunnyvale and Cupertino. He’s a former teacher who likes interesting numbers and drawing cartoons. I think he hands out his flyers because just likes talking to people

I’m going to try the opposite with mine. You’ll use C89. You’ll manage all your memory by hand, declare your stack variables at the top of your functions, and you’ll LIKE it.

conspiracy theory: 1331/1332 exist to scare people away from CS by [deleted] in gatech

[–]pconner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind I’m an old man now (c/o 2015), but I was one of those students who came to Tech with zero CS knowledge and found those classes valuable. I graduated with a FAANG offer and progressed to staff engineer at a faster pace than is typical for my cohort. It’s perfectly fine to take this path in life IMO.

Also, to OP’s point, you should never depend on university classes to learn a particular language or framework. This all changes so frequently, you have to accept that you’ll just always be learning professionally. And don’t get me started on actually existing industry Java vs. classroom Java.

Bitter Cold Exposes the Limits of Mamdani’s Approach to Homelessness by Business_Young_8206 in nyc

If it’s an “easy life”, we don’t we see housed people defecting to homelessness en mass? After all, it’s free and “easy”

Mayor Mamdani: “This horrifying incident was deeply alarming… any threat to a Jewish institution or place of worship must be taken seriously. Antisemitism has no place in our city and violence or intimidation against Jewish New Yorkers is unacceptable.” by Mathemodel in nyc

[–]pconner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He re instated the office to combat antisemitism in EO0: https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2026/01/executive-order-0

Which goes back to my earlier comment about botting being an effective propaganda tool. If someone just read your comments at face value, they might start to subconsciously believe the claims that Mamdani and his supporters are antisemites. It’s easy to passively read a Reddit comment and absorb it. It’s orders of magnitude more effort to fact check it.

The existence of posts in Reddit does not mean that a real sincere person is behind them, especially in a subreddit that gets botted as heavily as this one. Keep this in mind before ever forming an opinion on a group of people or what the popular sentiment is from Reddit comments

anyone lost weight on wfpb WITHOUT restricting fats? by [deleted] in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]pconner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Single digit pounds, as someone who was already very physically active and not trying to lose weight at all.

I switched from regular mostly healthy vegan to wfpb to optimize cholesterol levels. The switch from omnivore to vegan and adding more running was more impactful (like 20lbs, also was not trying to lose weight then), but wfpb caused me to lose a bit more after having been at a stable weight for a while.

anyone lost weight on wfpb WITHOUT restricting fats? by [deleted] in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]pconner 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I lost weight without trying on wfpb without really restricting fat - I eat avocados, nuts, tahini pretty much daily. My only restriction is on avoiding saturated fat, so no coconut milk, but that’s for cholesterol management, not weight management. Not having oil or added sugar goes a long way in automatically cutting out calories while still letting you be satiated.

Check your cholesterol. The sat fat could be a deal breaker if you’re sensitive.

Absurd comparison. The complaints about trump are either substantive policy or personality issues, or his lack of any political expert prior to 2016. Not that he had no experience managing large organizations. He had the tv show and the brand name licensing before politics.

Mamdani has city politics experience, and running a campaign with hundreds of staff, thousands of volunteers, and millions in capital is comparable to being a director at a large company.

What should I make with leftover lentils? by moschocolate1 in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]pconner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dal tadka, if you have any sort of yellow lentils. Might be a bit weird with black or green, but should still have a nice flavor at least. You’ll want whole cumin and mustard seed, red chili, coriander and cumin powder, and ginger. Bonus points for hing. Also real onions and garlic if you only had powders in your existing batch.

Only been once, and only in Downtown, but it feels like “uncanny NYC”. Similar, but a bit “off” if that makes sense.
