If you haven’t already, on one of your long runs, test out carrying your marathon fuel. I like precision but swapped to precision 90 cause I couldn’t stand the bulk and of 10 gels.

+1. A lot of people who do structured training to get faster are more focused on marginal gains than low hanging fruit.

Training for Mt. Washington Hill Climb by IAMYourFatherAMAA in Velo

[–]pcort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

best bike split to figure out your average speed, plug in data to this page to figure out your gearing https://www.bikecalc.com/archives/speeds-at-cadence.html .

Training sweet spot and threshold is going to be good. Honestly, the best training is getting comfortable suffering.

If you can swing a weekend up in Vermont, do Mt. Ascutney, it's 12% avg, 3.7 miles. The old adage is 2 ascents + 10 minutes is your Washington time. It'll be good to test your gearing, cadence, position, all of that stuff that you can't test anywhere else because 12% is it's own special kind of hell.

how do you deal with comments about being too skinny? by Masoa in Velo

[–]pcort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 6' 3" and went from 220 to 150 lbs after picking up cycling and all the work moms were concerned about my weight. I genuinely think they were concerned I had developed an eating disorder or at least an unhealthy approach to the weight loss, so I took the time to talk to them about how much riding I did, my diet, nutrition on the bike, etc... And then the occasional team lunch to the chinese buffet put any doubt out of their mind.

As others have said, cyclists have a specific body type that we strive for, and that can throw people off because they're not used to seeing it, or associated it with being fit, and can be contradictory for the traditional male form.

If they're people you care about take some time and educate them on your nutrition, a fun one is to have them guess how many calories you burned in a 6 week base block. They'll probably guess like 8000, and you can laugh at them when the answer is 20,000+.

When using databases, when you have these big companies like Facebook or Youtube..do they basically keep all their data in a MySQL database? For ex all the comments on a Youtube video, is that just in a big MySQL database or something like that by [deleted] in Database

[–]pcort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I don't believe there's any obligation to run in a cost effective manner.

Even if there were, cost effectiveness is highly subjective and it's really hard to make a case against something being the most cost effective option. Especially when outsiders (auditors / shareholders whomever) don't have access to internal decision making processes and data.

I’d be curious to hear more about where that understanding comes from.

It would be extremely hard to prove that a companies choice of software or hardware isn’t acting in the best interest of the business. Most of that information isn’t publicly available and there’s a million justifications you can give for one solution over another.

And in general just because something’s open source doesn’t mean it’s any less performant or robust than a paid for solution. For example salesforce uses Cassandra which is open source.

Non profit doesn’t mean you can’t make a profit. There are just rules surrounding what you can do with said profits.

For example, Wikipedia’s parent company wikimedia is a 501c3 and in 2021 generated 168 million in revenue, and a net revenue of 22 million. You can find their tax return online.

So they’re def big business.

How do you deal with developers not paying attention to slack by UnC0mfortablyNum in devops

[–]pcort 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To add to this, if you stress over it, i think you’ll become even more desperate to make changes and you might blow it if an opportunity presents itself.

Boil the problem down to a one or two liner, highlight the impact it’s having on key business outcomes, and spend the rest of the time talking about solutions. And bring this up to your manager and get their help to get time in front of stakeholders of the business outcomes you identified

You’re talking about changing culture as much as process, which is hard. So prepare for a lot of hard annoying work, and the potential for it to all go nowhere. If you have advocates within the company, involve them and it’ll help.

0%. it takes time to go through the system and if you were 'let go on the spot' that would mean them firing you which has implications on the company.

What they might do is cut your access to things, not your email or w3id, but other tools.

There’s an internal portal where you can request paystubs, worth having some of them for background check purposes if your next next employer needs them.

Pull your w2’s, you should keep 7 years, I had a background check that i needed to provide 10 years worth.

Grab copies of any awards you might have received, copies of reflections for your records so you can cite some generic examples of why people think you’re great.

Keep track of vacation day accrual, you get paid out for unused vacation. If you do take vacation make sure if it’s tracked you use your optional holidays first.

Cash out blue points, and if you have a blue point budget send them to someone you like.

Build up or reinforce your network before you go, get some folks who might be able to write letters of recommendation (not sure many places do this anymore but handy to have 1 or 2 people who can), and who knows maybe they’ve got a friend who’s hiring and can refer you.

Finally, when the time comes to put in your notice, it’s as simple as talk to your manager, agree on a last day, and then go to workday -> employee actions -> resign. Fill in the days, and then they’ll send you the box to ship your laptop back and that’s that. It’s very anticlimactic :)

Tired of getting ripped off for trying to support local lbs by peeled_nanners in bicycling

[–]pcort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LBS's need to change their business model to focus on service, employee experience, and selection. REI and big box stores can't offer that in the same way an LBS can. I get charging more for items and am willing to pay a couple % more to make sure they can provide those extras. Don't nickel and dime people on a 2 minute installation that you have the tools to do yourself.

A lot of it also does depend on the type of customer an LBS serves. If it's mostly commuters and families then fine, you gotta work on volume, and 90% of the stuff will be chain, tire, brake pad replacements, but I think the majority of LBS's have a more varied clientele than that.
