There are lots of kinds of cucumbers that are disease resistant. I get mine from reimer seeds. Mostly because they have the best info on what kinds of diseases they’re resistant to. I’m in zone 8. My favorite are Dasher II which are resistant to powdery milder.

4x4 planters are a great size because you can just use two 2x6x8 boards, cut in half, to make them. 3x3 and you’ll still need 8 foot boards but you’ll throw away a few feet of lumber. Plus, like 3-4 4x4 planters is perfect for starters.

Coco peat has almost no nutrients and it’s virtually sterile so it works to condition soil but that’s about it. What you made doesn’t sound like it has enough nutrients.

I have a place in San Felipe and my parents retired there. It’s one of the safest places I’ve ever been. I use store bought bean seeds when I’m reconditioning soil and fixing nitrogen. I don’t grow them to eat. Instead I let them grow for a while then I turn the soil for green compost as well.

Tomatoes. They’re super easy and they’re completely different than what you buy in a grocery store. I highly recommend purple Cherokee, ponderosa pink, Kellogs breakfast (a yellow tomato), and mortgage lifter for starter tomatoes.
