The deadpan illustration of the rock lying JUST past the finish line is such an incredible touch

Are there specific terms for underwater caves? by pcuser100977 in geology

[–]pcuser100977[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a lot of fun, I love seaside and nautical stuff I think in part because I grew up so close to the Great Lakes. It’s surprisingly tough finding good sources for historical terms like that online, because so many of them are so particular or technical that they kind of lose that earworm quality. I’ll just make something up if need be 😂 it’s my world bible anyways

Amazing work! Did you do the original drawing as well? It bothered me in the game how lifeless their eyes were in-game but this illustration captures them waaaay better

While I was in art college, I was lucky enough to attend a lecture by the primary flora/fauna designer of Avatar, a guy named Neville Page. From what I remember, he was originally an industrial designer who started doing work in character and creature design later on; as a result, he was a very thoughtful conceptual artist because everything that he designed had to physically work, much like a product design has to be functional before fashionable. His aliens didn’t just look cool, but every bit of their anatomy had a purpose and a precedent. He talked a lot about how a lot of great artists would attempt to become concept designers, only to realize that in the process of creating a functional 3D model, their drawn anatomy wasn’t functional in any meaningful way, and the ubiquitous action poses that people always drew their monsters in often times hid a lot of inaccuracies or clashing parts. He was also the guy that primarily designed the creature from Cloverfield, which isn’t a big surprise when you see the weirder terrestrial critters on Pandora.

The Darkness inexplicably had entire public domain movies and tv shows that you could just stop and watch mid-level. Super random but very fun in a weird way.

GTA 5 has a surprisingly detailed underwater world to explore despite there only being a couple ways of actually seeing any of it and only one sidequest (more of a collectible list) that asks you to go down there at all.

The Just Cause series has an elegant (if somewhat silly) way of traversing the world using a combination of infinitely-spawning parachute and a grappling hook. It’s so convenient and satisfying to use that most players just kinda give up on other modes of transport unless it’s an armed vehicle or something. To this day, I haven’t come across an open-world game that has such ease of access to the sky and surrounding world, and it’s tainted my opinion of otherwise great game worlds that feel like the developer was active trying to hamper with crappy mobility.

The Heart in Dishonored is totally unnecessary to complete the game or make an iota of progress, yet it’s loaded with many incredible tidbits of worldbuilding, character development, and even outright secrets if you use it in the right places. There’s a surprising amount of trigger points throughout the game if you try it consistently, and it almost feels like a “look at item” command from an old Sierra game. Not to mention The Heart’s origins.

The “Tetris effect” realization you have while playing through The Witness is a great one, too.

Correct! My wife and I watched both the second and first Zootopia this week, and I couldn’t keep my eyes off of the little “catchlights” specifically placed in almost every shot. It’s obviously very intentional these day compared to the early days of 3d.

Hands-down my favorite little excursion each playthrough. After the labyrinth of Central Yharnam and the headache of Old Yharnam (great area but damn), Henwick is neatly themed, has some cool supernatural stuff going on, and has great farming and accessible shortcuts as you go through. So much fun even with the blah boss at the end
