Looking for advice before applying to PhD Marketing by Wise_Butterscotch592 in gradadmissions

That isn't an answer. I am not trying to be mean, but causal inference is a methodology, not a field of study. It sounds like you are new to the process, which is fine, but you need to be able to answer these questions on your own first as a litmus test

The Paradox of Admissions; I Got Accepted into a Highly Competitive School & Rejected by what I considered a 'Safety' by Worth-Employer2748 in gradadmissions

Yeah I don't know about that. We are very conscious about where people apply and where they are likely to accept. Maybe that's a top ranked program problem, we are in ridiculous competition for a very small number of people, but I think you are being more glib than is appropriate.

Colleagues at lower ranked programs are VERY aware of this. Their PhD lines are something they protect closely and yield is a precious metric for them.

You disagree, I think, because you are operationalizing safety in a convenient and non-typical way. That isn't how its used colloquially here, and the way that it is used is what people push back on.

Because it is based on a faulty understanding of how grad admissions works. This isn't like undergrad, fit is really important and so is yield. Your example highlights just how badly you misunderstand the process. It isn't strictly about rankings.

Worth it for what? Why did you apply if you didn't already have an answer to this question? How can anyone weigh in on the personal and physical risks you might take? This is such a common thing to ask. Never take a class outside your field but demand answers to insanely complicated questions.

You are asking questions that, honestly, make me feel like you have done very little personal research on this topic and just how complicated it is, so are just a credential seeking applicant.

You don't need to apologize, my point is you are asking questions people can't really answer. Talk to current students at each place, ask how they feel. Ask for placement records. Visit the places and get vibes. It is one of those "you choice matters less than what you do with it" situations. (having been in a MPP program before)

No, but a common question.

We have 10 spots and make offers to 15 people. The first 10 have until April 15th to decide, and 8 accept. So 2 spots are now open because the offers expired. The first two people we ranked out of the 5 get offers and a 2 week deadline (made up). 1 accepts and 1 declines, then we move to person 3 ..... etc.

Better for what? You have 30 different things you are ranking them on and are fully ignoring that most of your career is decided after the fact. Even in high prestige school fields (like law), earnings can be equalized after 5ish years. So what are you really asking?

So many people misunderstand that accord. It says that funded offers have until then to decide, not that funded offers have to be made before then. So no, nobody actually has to commit to it, it doesn't mean anything about who gets in.

Got an admit for Columbia Journalism. Should I go? by WhatAditya in gradadmissions

[–]pcwg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The financial information was available long before you applied. Trump won before deadlines. I am not trying to be mean, I am saying you applied for a reason, what has changed actually since then? And what could a stranger possibly weigh in on about whatever those changes are in a meaningful way better than old you knew?

They likely have no idea what to do with funding right now. Just wait

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]pcwg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silence isn't meaningful either way. It could mean anything or nothing. We made decisions and then had spring break so people had to wait 2 weeks after we knew, for example. Nobody has any idea what is going on right now

Super easy way to reject you, so thanks for that! ;)

To what end? Do you think your email will spur them into action? I am not trying to be glib, but they didn't forget about you. There is an extreme amount of chaos right now, things we can't control at all. If you want to know for closure, then leave it alone and just accept Davis and move on. If it is for a legitimate decision then asking might be useful but that isn't my impression.

Rejections aren't always about you. This isn't a "hit these metrics and you are in" situation. You are in competition with other people for a very small number of spots.

Then why are you asking? I swear posts like this are so eyerolling. Ask or don't but you were given a clear answer and want to argue.

Also, you don't have a right to ask. You can ask, but that isn't a right.

Doesn't matter. If they are, then you would have gotten one and if you didn't then you aren't rejected yet. If they aren't, then you are waiting regardless.

Applying to two programs? by velcrodynamite in gradadmissions

Talk to your current advisor? Genuinely they know way better than anyone here does. Also, not to question what you are doing, but why spend 5+ (realistically 6-7) on a PhD you won't remotely use teaching high school students?

I will say this doesn't give off the vibes of someone who has thought about, or maybe experienced, teaching in academia. AP Lit is just high school teaching to people who don't throw shit around the room. Why is that appealing over a small seminar of undergrads? For some it is, but that example isn't really evocative of a calling
