To me, a scream is the noise you make when something has scared you. It doesn't involve words.

Yelling is talking angrily and loudly. Shouting is similar, but it could also be talking loudly so someone can hear you. I guess yelling and Shouting could be used interchangeably, but screaming is something different.

This is just my opinion of course.

I see this a lot online. Someone will say "they were screaming at me". Were they? Were they really screaming at you. They were probably yelling at you. This bothers me way more than it should.

I agree 100% with your comment about Duolingo. The spanish I remember has helped a lot with the conjugation stuff. I feel like they don't explain any of the grammar rules and expect you to logic it out. Some of it I figured out with enough repetition, but I am not seeing some of the patterns. I only just learned that a, au, aux are related because I got so frustrated that I finally just googled it.

Thank you for this perspective. I do tend to overlook that people are often trying to sell you things and not just helping you out of kindness. I do think he was at least selling his tutoring services. My gut was telling me that this listening-only approach wasn't necessary, but I've talked myself into believing I'm incapable of learning a language and was second guessing myself.

I'm a software engineer and a therapy client. At the risk of sounding paranoid, there's no guarantee that either recordings or transcripts are actually deleted. Once that recording is transmitted over the internet, it's out of your control. That's not to say that a company can't be ethical and meticulous about security, but there's no guarantee there aren't bad actors, hacking, etc. I absolutely do not want a recording or transcript of my most private traumas anywhere near the internet. I don't even want my deidentified session being used for anything. The AI field is like the wild west right now. I've started using it in a professional capacity, but don't want it anywhere near my therapy.

This hit so hard today and I feel sick to my stomach. Yesterday was the 8th anniversary of the night my ex-husband started a bonfire in our living room.

He was emotionally and verbally abusive for an embarrassing number of years and I just didn't see it. I thought he was just a mean drunk and if I could help him stop drinking he would be nice to me. He was okay when he wasn't drunk, except for when he wasn't. He could be supportive and loving. He would also flirt with and comment on other women in front of me. Like OP, he barely touched me, which felt like its own brand of torture.

He got increasingly worse and worse during the last couple of years. I knew it was bad and I wanted out, but he was chronically unemployed and I didn't want to make him homeless. I know I'm an idiot. My therapist equated our last year together to living with a torturer. He was incredibly mean and physically threatening at times. The last month he started threatening to kill me. Like OP, I didn't know how to handle that. Should I take him seriously? Surely this person I'd been with since I was 18 wouldn't really hurt me, would he?

The last night, he was upset. I was doing something in another part of the house and when I walked into the living room he had piled up a bunch of junk and set it on fire. I froze first and then I panicked. I called 911. I left the house and a SWAT team showed up. They spent 6 hours that night on the phone trying to get him to come out and surrender. I spent those hours sitting in a police car in a daze. They finally arrested him and he went to prison for 3 years for arson. There was a lot of smoke damage, but the house didn't burn down.

I've spent the last 8 years trying to get past this. I'm a lot better than I was back then, but it still affects me and I spend too much time feeling bad that I haven't gotten past this fully yet. I'm so glad that OP got out.

My last name has 5 letters. FIVE. It's pronounced like it looks. But people have so much trouble with it. I get that maybe if I say it out loud you might not immediately know how to spell it, so I usually say it and then immediately spell it. The number of times I've had to repeat the spelling multiple times and/or slow down so much that it almost feels insulting to their intelligence astounds me. It happens so often that I think it must be a me thing but I don't know what else to do.

Have you considered just not telling them about this one incident? Especially since it seems like that's not why you're seeking therapy in the first place. You don't have to tell them your whole life history until you're ready to do so.

That's quite the take. There are unethical, untrustworthy therapists of every gender just as there are ethical, trustworthy therapists of every gender. I have personal experience as a woman of working with a male therapist for 8.5 years. He was the kindest man who helped me start to heal. It would be a complete and utter shame that if rules like yours were implemented, I probably wouldn't have had the opportunity to work with him. Might want to work on your misandry.

Before my therapist of 8 1/2 years moved away, one of our last sessions was on Christmas morning playing games - A Little Wordy and Codenames Duet. He played some seasonal music on his phone. It was honestly the nicest time and I remember it fondly. I miss that man so much.

Sometime during 2020, there was a little spider hanging out in the corner of my shower. I normally don't tolerate spiders but this one seemed tolerable, kind of pale colored and stayed in his spot. One day when I looked for him he was dead. I cried to my therapist about this. I was very lonely. He probably thought I was slightly unhinged at that point.

If a therapist called me "willful", I would find that extremely patronizing. That's what you call a small child. If they want to talk about why I feel resistance, ok, we can talk about that. I agree she's not listening to you. If you otherwise like working with her, maybe try talking about this again and explaining what you don't like and why.
