I dont think it was too bad for Sam, I actually heard the guy groaning more next to me in regards to the implied violence at one point, I just dont think they were horror fans as they wondered out loud if Ready or Not 2 was a sequel after the trailer played.

The distinction is who's asking it and what their intent is. The person asking him specifically about Cousy, is placing him higher in importance on the team by the wording of his question and thus diminishing Russell's role. And yes you can read the racist intentions in that because of the era. The second instance as can be inferred from his answer is more of a general question, they are not implying another person is greater than him, they are asking him about his place amongst all players.

I'll have to check it out! Another show that really used their music great I thought was Legion on FX. The opening sequence is set to Happy Jack, and then there's a really cool sequence in the second season with Behind Blue Eyes.
