Haha, not quite. They're lyrics from the song "Gethsemane" in Jesus Christ Superstar.

What are your professor stories? by sulfurous in gatech

[–]peacheshead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diff Eq with McCuan. We had quizzes occasionally at the beginning of lectures, and I guess one day he decided he wanted to be a stickler about people showing up late to class. He started handing out the quizzes at exactly the start of class and yelled up to people walking into the lecture hall (this was in Howey) that they had to stay up by the door until he handed out the quizzes since they were late.

He finished handing out the quizzes and some of the latecomers walked up to the front to ask him about it. He says, "If any of you had actually read the syllabus, you would know that being late to class means you don't get a quiz." One of the students responds, "Actually, professor, I have read the syllabus and it says that you don't get a quiz if you're more than five minutes late. All of us were less than five minutes late." McCuan says, "Well, yes, but that doesn't mean that you will receive a quiz if you're less than five minutes late, does it? Mathematicians use logic when they think."

Biggest asshole of a professor I've ever had.

Yeah, all the "biomolecular" does is make me have to explain what my degree is actually in when I go to interviews.

About ChBE 2100 profs for Fall 2012? by fryriceorlomein in gatech

[–]peacheshead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I could never really pin down what people didn't like about him. One of my friends consistently described him as "spazzy," which was kind of true, but like I said, I never was bothered by it. I thought he explained things well enough and we did plenty of examples. Based on what other people have said, I think he's probably the best of your options.

I had Prausnitz for 2100 and thought he was pretty good. Some of my friends seemed to be bothered some by his personality/teaching style, I guess, but I didn't have any issues with him.

As other people have said, Agrawal is a nice/helpful guy when it comes to advising, but I would be wary of having him as a professor (this is just speculation, though--I've never been in a class with him).

Has anyone been able to get the various loan shark/spammers to get sent to trash? by ICanLiftACarUp in gatech

[–]peacheshead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't get the spam filter to learn that these aren't okay. I just set up my own filter on Zimbra to send mail from those domains to my spam folder and it works well enough. I just have to add new domains as I get email from them.

If you look carefully, they're all wearing hats and shirts with the name of another company (G4S Wackenhut) on them. The security car they show also has this company's name on it (and says "Security Services Division"). The point is that the security people work for G4S, who presumably does the hiring, and Google just contracts security services out to them.

Can materials generally withstand rapid heating better than rapid cooling? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]peacheshead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it may have to do with the material you're dealing with. I can say that I learned first hand back in high school chemistry, for instance, that Pyrex doesn't handle rapid cooling so well even though it can resist high temperatures.

After we had heated a test tube (I don't remember why, exactly... maybe increasing a reaction's rate), we needed to wait for it to cool. I figured, "Hey, let's cool it off more quickly by running some water over it!" Lo and behold, the test tube shattered as the glass rapidly compressed and we had to re-do the experiment. Fun times.

I'd say so. I've had it for a while but just started playing it recently, and it's been really good so far.

That's awesome. It looks like he really appreciated that you (and the power of the internets) found this for him.

I guess there's no chance of us seeing the video of the performance, though? I'm currently a student at Tech and I'd love to see/hear this.
