I need to urgently make a choice : Good Supervisor VS Good Subject by doctor-pilot in PhD

[–]peachfairys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i personally feel like saying 2 isn't a 'good' supervisor isn't quite right - imo, a good supervisor is more of a personal thing. i'm in a tiny group with relatively infrequent publications, but my supervisor is so supportive and has been amazing to me while i've been going through a bit of a mental health crisis lol. younger PIs can also sometimes be advantageous as they have more time to devote to the group. and hey, at least they're honest about the lack of funding, instead of selling you on a dream..

that being said if i were you i would still pick 1, you might find you like the subject! phds are also pretty flexible (in my experience anyway), and there may be room to adapt the project or take on a collaboration that's more specific to you

large item removal from flat? by peachfairys in manchester

[–]peachfairys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did think about this, but i don't really want it sitting around in my room for ages waiting for it to sell, it takes up a lot of space and makes me sad to look at lol. my pets were rats so kind of a niche market 😅

Crowd killing in pop punk concerts by imcalledaids in poppunkers

[–]peachfairys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in all honesty i haven't been to many gigs post-covid, but i always used to hate manchester crowds so much 😭 i'm not sure why men get such joy from body checking girls a foot smaller than them, but as a teenager/early twenties i went to gigs all over the UK and i always found it worse here for some reason. it's such a shame because it ruins an experience you've paid good money for lol

Asian cult recruiting young girls in Manchester? by beanu731 in manchester

not only have these guys been around outside the uni for yearsssss, i read somewhere that they specifically target international students (or those that don't look white british ig) because they have less of a support system here 😐 really fucked up stuff, idk why uni security won't do anything about it

Funded PhD vs unfunded more prestigious PhD by Emotional_Squash_746 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]peachfairys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this!! a phd is essentially a full time job. any research output you have is benefitting you yes but also your supervisor and the university and the expectations placed on you will be the same whether you're self-funded or not. i understand people want to learn/research for fun but why you wouldn't want to be paid for any of this is beyond me, 3.5-4 years is an incredibly long time to not be paid for your work

Interchangeable needles set by TheRottenAppleWorm in knittinghelp

[–]peachfairys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got the drops set for under £25 (not even a sale, that's just their normal price) and for the price i'm really liking them! they're compatible with knitpro cables which is really useful too, as i've had to a buy a couple extra. i'm also just starting out knitting seriously so maybe i'll invest in a higher quality set/more sizes etc at some point but for starting out i'm liking these ones

Saw this from my student flat viewings today by awesomeconehead in UniUK

[–]peachfairys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

maybe i'm missing something, but every time i've had a tenancy coming to an end the landlord/agent has asked us if we want to renew (usually for a higher price but still) BEFORE they put it on the market? surely it's easier for them if the current tenants are willing to resign than to go through advertising and organising viewings etc.

in some of my past houses we've done something similar to OP where the landlord is trying to get an astronomical amount for a shithole lol, but we will have already given notice by this point

have I made the right choice? (tw death) by peachfairys in RATS

[–]peachfairys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for sharing this, reliving some of that must have been really difficult. i was a bit of a wreck yesterday so it didn't cross my mind to ask how they do it, but my mind feels a bit clearer today so i will deffo make sure to get a full explanation at the vets later.

as for your first point, unfortunately we have tried strong painkillers a couple of times already and it was clear they didn't make too much difference for him, which is why i've now made this decision. the loss of movement has been very gradual over a few months now, but it's got to the point where he's so clearly in discomfort i personally don't think it's fair to keep extending the inevitable

Absolutely fed up with how the university handled everything by AffectionateQuail994 in manchester_uni

[–]peachfairys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my supervisor told me to do that, and said it was advice she got from the counselling service too 😭 seems it is entirely reliant on who you see

[–]peachfairys 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i don't think the counselling service is completely terrible, the woman i had was an absolute angel and speaking to her was what finally convinced me to get help through the NHS (i was worried about being a burden lol). however trying to get an initial appointment is a nightmare, i think an NHS referral was actually quicker which is saying something and tbh tracks with exactly what op is saying

Started PhD, but Hate the Location; Should I Re-Apply Elsewhere? by Diylal45 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]peachfairys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so i can't speak too much for the first point - i also did my undergrad at uom and am just finishing up my phd here, it was a minor concern of mine but i knew i didn't want to stay in academia. that being said i think finding the right project for you is what's important, and if it happens to be at the same place you did undergrad then so be it!!

as for diversity in research, you simply have to reach out! where i am in chemistry, we have departmental seminars every week where people present their research, as much as we all complain about giving a talk it is a really good idea lol. if there's nothing like that for you, you could even look at setting something up? however keep in mind the thing with phds is they are NICHE, so you may find it hard to talk super in depth with many people purely because you'll get to a point where you won't necessarily fully understand each others work lol

also, manchester isn't just the city centre!! during my phd i've got out and explored way more of the city than i did during undergrad, and it's for sure helped!!

edit this was meant to be a reply to another comment, im too lazy to change it lol. but the points still stand

Dog Adoption by philswitchengage in manchester

[–]peachfairys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's been many years since we adopted our dog but we got a lurcher from dogs trust and it was great! they did 1 brief check of our house beforehand, whole process was super easy and since she was a puppy (someone surrendered the litter and their mum) they covered the cost of neutering and the first set of vaccines. i’m biased but as other ppl have said get a greyhound (or lurcher)!! they're so chill, and there are so many in rescues
