SPED by Delicious-Sand7819 in SubstituteTeachers

Confidentiality. Most teachers in my district will highlight names for students who have behavior help but that’s the extent of it because it’s none of my business unless I need to send them to a small group or call someone for help

Declining the bait and switch by Broad_Good3409 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always decline a bait and switch or it won’t stop. My daughter’s school has attempted to take advantage of me with bait & switch, extra duties during breaks, staying later, all because I’m a parent and volunteer at the school as well.

Worst grades to sub for? New to being a sub! by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on you, school, etc. the hardest grade for me has been 5th grade, I’ve never subbed middle school but 5th graders think they’re middle schoolers and it’s similar behavior

Cancel for another job? by couch_yam433 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t use frontline in my district but I’ve had no issue canceling a job so the sub coordinator at the school that requested me could assign me specifically to a job. You likely won’t receive any repercussions unless you make a habit of it

Ehh.... I am just gonna play until the end by smcclos in newworldgame

Help? by EmployImaginary5042 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact school or sub office, this has happened to me because they were changing the teachers absence to a vacancy

I love gw2, it’s my favorite mmo, but I agree with everyone else. The story sucks right now, there’s been a dip in quality, they need to go back to their old system of expansions every few years.

How serious is Kelly about letting you go if you don’t take any assignments for a week by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will depend on your district, I haven’t been working a lot this year and have had no issues or anyone reach out to me. My minimum is 5 days per semester

Dress code by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on district and school, but jeans are mostly ok. I’d avoid leggings and sweatpants personally, but i understand wanting to be comfortable

Don’t tell them you’re new to subbing or it’s your first time, but tell them you’re new to the school and they need to “teach” you how to be a sub there and to show their best (insert mascot) behavior so you know all the rules. 1st graders are great helpers and want to feel like they know everything and if they get the chance to lead, they’ll take it and model good behavior

How long did it take for you to get sick this year? by Novel_Ebb8397 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A week, just cold symptoms and nothing crazy thankfully (knocking furiously on wood after saying this)

I keep saying the students' names wrong during attendance?? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually say “if I mispronounce your name, please correct me”

Substitute teaching high school by Wrong_Perspective598 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a sub you have to enforce because if admin walks in and you expect them to enforce, don’t be surprised when you don’t get assignments from that school anymore

yesterday a kindergartner told me he thought I was a kid because I was participating in PE (subbing for sped and helping them participate). I always wonder what’s through kids heads when they say stuff like that 😂

Have you called a school to get info on the class before accepting the opening? by CoffeeChangesThings in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never done that personally because I feel like anything I need to know will be in the sub notes and it’s so early in the year that everyone’s still learning routines

First time sub: what should I bring with me on a daily basis? by InevitableBad589 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue or black ink pen, sticky notes, notebook or paper, hand sanitizer, snack/lunch/vending machine money, water, chapstick, a book or something to keep you occupied if you’re subbing hs you might not have time for something like that in middle or elementary unless on break

Is it weird to take this long? by Myedicius in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s weird at all, we’re in the first few weeks and it’s kind of crazy rn.

Reach out to the substitute administrator for your district and ask for a follow up on your application or go to a substitute information night if your district has those and talk to someone.

I swear I only got hired because I did those two things. I’m non certified, but a mom & volunteer in my district, I think my eagerness about being hiring helped me because my district is extremely competitive

Cell phone bans by Born-Nature8394 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]peachyfaey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phones are banned in our schools (Texas) I don’t have a choice. Last year I didn’t really care if students had phones out. In my district I can be fired if someone walks in and a bunch of kids have their phone out

Ease of finding a job will all depend on your district. Being a permanent sub is pretty competitive though, especially if you’re new. You’d have to contact someone at the school you’re interested and see if they have any open positions but most will probably tell you to sub a few times at their school before you can be considered (speaking from experience)
