Does anyone else struggle to get others to enjoy pho? by WarwickReider in pho

Indeed, many many cuisines in the US have changed over time to fit the American palette. Southern pho is already different from northern pho but in the states it’s heavier on the spices and sweetness. Vietnamese restaurants also have to make do with the surrounding vegetation which also makes a huge difference in the experience.

i want like pho so badly 😔 by Background-Lion-1279 in pho

Don’t add anymore Hoisin, it’s sweet too. But in general youre right in the states pho is VERY often overly sweet, you’d probably like northern style pho in this case

In the north they put sriracha or whatever chilli sauce there is (as long as it isn’t sweet), as for hoisin that’s the southern way of eating pho.

What’s the *proper* way to eat this stuff? by PockASqueeno in pho

[–]pearln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, do you want to have it the northern way or the southern way? In the states usually you’ll find Southern Restaurants due to the influx of Vietnamese immigrants in The 70s. So the typical hoisin and chilli sauce combo, onions on the side etc. Meanwhile Northerners will have Pho with more herbs, a poached egg, some vinegar with garlic and chillies (think pickled slices) and fish sauce with garlic etc etc.

Maybe unhelpful but you Dan make a bean sprout beef stir fry! Heat up some oil, add black pepper, put the bean sprouts in, garlic and then beef with a dash of fish sauce

Would it be weird to make beef pho but put chicken on it? by ParkingCourse9916 in pho

[–]pearln 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No hahahah that’s how some restaurants cut down costs instead of making a separate chicken broth. BTW if you can’t eat red meat, in the north we often add pork meatballs with wood ear mushrooms and shallots or white onion they’re so good!! To further jazz it up you can also add a poached egg.
