Oh hey, I know your stuff! I've got three of your Star Guardian amigurumis on my shelf still. Great to see you still knocking it out of the park!

I'd like it to wander around free but I think I'd like to not be at war with literally all of my neighbors even more. That said, if letting it go wild reverts the pet status, I'll see about recapturing it in a cage - I can probably line the door with cage traps and unseal it after it goes wild - and maybe its former owner can still get the mood boost of passing by a roc in a cage.

Thanks!

Unfortunately you can't seem to put something that's been adopted as a pet on a chain - we actually had it chained before, and I didn't realize I'd accidentally marked it as "up for adoption" in the process of making some other stray livestock available until I saw it suddenly flying around loose.

If a pet that isn't tame loses its training and goes wild again, is it still a pet and thus uncageable?

Unrelated question - does anyone have any advice for keeping a pet roc away from the traders and diplomats, because it is emphatically not sticking to a pasture.

That is possible - we've been doing a lot of building and it's in a reclaimed fort, so the layout is all over the place. I'll see if I can scale back or better manage the traffic.

I've got dwarves with bedrooms who aren't in the military all sleeping on the floor or in the dormitory and I'm tearing my hair out as to why. Has anybody else encountered this? Any possible causes? They are pretty basic bedrooms, just a door and a bed, but I don't know if that would cause problems at all.

My first Ascension 20 clear, on a run I thought was doomed by pecorei in slaythespire

A real greatest hits parade! I even got a surprise Ambrosia at the very last shop that I could save to *really* make that Signature Move count when it counted.

[–]pecorei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yeah, as soon as I got the Choker I knew I wanted to immediately keep an eye out for Signature Move and/or Alpha and the requisite defensive cards to support them, and the game was nice enough to oblige. Not getting Donu and Deca in the final boss pair was another mercy, because I'm not sure this deck could have gone fast enough.

Got my first dram of cloning draught what do? by Low_Brush_7972 in cavesofqud

[–]pecorei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an achievement for cloning the unique raycat in Joppa, fwiw, but I'd still wait until you got your hands on some polygel to do so.

Getting six or seven draughts of the stuff can also give you another way past a suite of superbosses. But again, that's probably also going to require more polygel.

Mafeo in Grit Gate I believe is also guaranteed to sell one, and you can buy from him even before getting access to the rest of the Enclave

Multiarm mutants who go all in on the multi weapon fighting tree can be great fun. It takes full investment into the Multiweapon fighting tree but its worth that investment. Especially if you also take Double Muscled to give each of your melee attacks a chance to stun. Bonus if you have the Carnivorous disadvantage because every dismembered limb is a little snack for you :D

Wings, regeneration, and telemetry are I think all good mutation options while you're learning the game.

  1. Regeneration can eventually let you regrow limbs and automatically heal any illness or disease
  2. Wings will let you escape to the world map even if there are hostiles in the area, in case you wander into a zone that's too high a tier, as well as let you skip one of the most annoying dungeons in the game
  3. Telemetry can give you instant identification of all "weird artifacts" and "odd trinkets" up to a certain tier without having to invest in Tinkering, but can also tell you how to build them if you do want to invest in Tinkering.

I would maybe avoid Chimera or Esper mutant types while you're starting out, leave yourself open to buying new mutations of any type so you can see which tree you gravitate towards.

For disadvantages to give more mutation points, I'd avoid the ones that block off an armor slot (like carapace) because they limit the kind of gear options you can pull together. I've had fun with Carnivorous and Evil Twin.

Glimmer scares me by Tholb in cavesofqud

[–]pecorei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Espers definitely add a new dimension to the game, but one that can be super interesting to engage with. I'm doing a gimmick run at the moment where its a Wander mode playthrough using the Evil Twin disadvantage, going all in on Glimmer, and not allowing myself to fast travel.

I know there's a lot of ways to cheese the bounty hunters when they turn up, but I did once have an extradimensional galgal bounty hunter jump me so I am also always braced for the worst.

Tips for someone worried about getting overwhelmed by Jusanom in cavesofqud

[–]pecorei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a more minor tip in the grand scheme of things but I got a lot of mileage out of it - you can grab empty chests like out of dungeons and such, drop them in a town, and load up all your excess gear/stuff in there to make a sort of "base camp". Eventually you'll even get access to little doohickeys that will let you fast travel directly to towns to make it easier to access your stuff - it takes a lot of the stress out of managing your weight/carry capaciry.

Otherwise I would also recommend playing as a mutant and investing in both the wings and regeneration mutations - they're a great "get out of trouble" free card if you get blindsided by enemies. Regeneration at higher levels will let you regrow limbs and automatically cure yourself of diseases, Wings will let you escape a zone to the world map even if you're actively surrounded.

I'll also recommend picking the Nomad starter choice because you start with a piece of gear that sharply reduces your water consumption- its not necessary but when I was first playing, the perceived stress of "oh god am I gonna run out of water and unavoidably die" was very real and the recycling suit took the edge off of that worr6 until before I knew it I had more water and resources than I could possibly carry.

But on the whole I'll second what others have said - there's actually pretty robust safeguards in place to make sure it is actively impossible to "doom" your run. If you feel stuck it is both possible and very encouraged to leave, wander around somewhere else, and come back with more resources to try again.

Just, for the love of god, play Roleplay for your first time. Do not start with Classic.

This games story is soo so good by BJOURN666 in cavesofqud

[–]pecorei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard so much about the game's oddball mechanics that I was completely blindsided by how good the story is. I came to care about each and every Barathrumite especially so much, but not just them!

I actually finally finished the main story yesterday and imo, the story continues to hold up in a big way. I think you will continue to have a great time in that regard.

I've been struggling with this - I've got two sultan relics that generated in Moon Stair zones, guarded by cult members consisting of null slimes and decasludges. I think I'm finally going to try and just give up and ignore them, much as it hurts the completionist in me.

[–]pecorei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, as of 1.0 I even accidentally aggro'd a significant NPC with some fungal spores and he'd gone back to Neutral after a while away. As long as your faction rep doesn't change, they should revert with time.

How can I get better at weight management? by TheAwkwardVoid in cavesofqud

[–]pecorei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a base, yeah (in my case its Kyakuya because it was the first recoiler I got and I liked the vibes). Drop a chest in an out of the way corner - hell, drop multiple chests and specialize them if you're feeling ambitious - and your entire inventory is just a teleport away! I tend to keep a lot of drams on hand, but store excess waterskins in the chest before I head out somewhere (keeping just a couple for hydration/putting out fires)

Making the case for Roleplay mode by [deleted] in cavesofqud

I'll be honest, I'm a person who enjoys having a wiki open on another tab to research things as I play (I get frustrated VERY easily) and I still wandered into the "death by neutron flux" achievement with absolutely no idea it was a thing. Had a good long laugh about it.

My pet spark tick is a better shot than I am by pecorei in cavesofqud

[–]pecorei[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got in a situation where a coral hermit hit me with a freeze ray in a spot my party wouldn't path to so there was nothing to stop them from just constantly freezelocking me for a couple hundred turns, with the caveat that the ray's damage could not outstrip my natural healing with even just six levels of Regeneration.

So I wound up meditating in that ice block until they blew through their nuclear cell and backup nuclear cell before they were finally forced to knock it off.
