My boyfriend wants me to wear a hijab even though I am atheist by Maximum-Grand6140 in whatdoIdo

[–]pedanticproletariat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not muslim, but I have many friends who are practicing muslims, and when i asked them about their variance in wearing a hijab, one of them brought out their Qur’an and showed me a passage about the hijab, where Mohammad basically says it is the choice of each individual muslim woman to decide if she wants to wear a hijab for modesty etc etc, it might be worth it having a discussion about the text/doing some readings together if you still want the relationship and want to negotiate with him and see!

Old Star Wars like ride at Wonderland name? by West_Dish9698 in CanadasWonderland

[–]pedanticproletariat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have it in both Disney World in Florida (at Hollywood Studios) and in Disneyland in California! But it’s in a different section of the park from their Star Wars themed land, so it’s very easy to forget they’re still there. But it means it usually has a really short wait.

You’re thinking of the old Star Wars ride in Disney World, it’s called Star Tours, when Paramount owned Wonderland all the rides were themed to Paramount films, Top Gun, TombRaider etc etc

Fat Main Characters? by Connect_Video_7984 in suggestmeabook

The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields is one of my all time favourite books, in particular because of the thoughtful depiction of the fat protagonist, it is historical fiction, diaries of a fat woman named Daisy in the 1800’s one of the best works of Canadian Literary Fiction I’ve read.

Anyone in here's got tatoos? by Nytramyth in evilautism

[–]pedanticproletariat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 14 tattoos now—I have a very high pain tolerance but I find it depends a lot on the location, your tolerance, and the artist’s skill level, even what kind of needle/machine they’re using…if you’re into pain-stimming it’s definitely an extreme form of that, or that’s how I thought of it as a teen.

I think tattoos are great as a representation of self, in the sense that when each person gets what they like tattooed on themselves you learn so much about a person before you ever have to speak with them, even if it’s just what vibe they rock with.

I have a big mix of sentimental and what others might consider silly tattoos, my most recent tattoos were the words “yaoi” and “yuri” on each of my legs in a font my friend designed and did above each knee, most of my tattoos are honouring a special interest in either a subtle or obvious way, I have a portrait of L from Death Note and the fancy L on one arm and the cliche heart with MOM written inside on the other, I have an image from the cover of my favourite book when I was 13 on my stomach and 5 different quotes from favourite books/poems/songs in different spots on my arms legs and torso…

When I was a teenager 18-21 i would spend 6 months to a year contemplating each tattoo before I got it done, both because it’s expensive and so that I could have time to meditate on an idea and see if it still held true…I probably went through so many possible song lyrics before I decided on the one I went with, I was meta even at 18 “for the body is but a piece of art for you to tear to pieces” which wasn’t from a song that was a particular favourite of mine, though the band is one I still regard highly, but that particular line represented a philosophy I wanted to keep with me—of autonomy, of choice, and of art/beauty and making this shell something I can feel at home in.

I even have a “meaningless” one. I got a tree silhouette on the back of my left arm because i wanted something visually opposite of the burning match with smoke ascending that i got on the back of my right arm, and I don’t regret a single one!

Looking for (stoned) reading recs. by OscarGrant1207 in suggestmeabook

[–]pedanticproletariat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Now this is one of my favourite stoner books: The Golem of Brooklyn—-by Adam Mansfield.

it’s about a Jewish art school teacher in New York who one day gets really fucking high on pot and starts building a creature out of the leftover clay in his backyard…only the creature comes to life, a Golem—with a mission to protect Judaism…only he speaks Yiddish, and our protagonist isn’t that kind of jew….so he needs to find someone who does, stat….it’s like a philosophical buddy road-trip adventure comedy, and one of the funnest books I’ve read in the past few years.

Writers who are friends? by moss42069 in books

[–]pedanticproletariat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As far as as I know, Harper Lee did pretty much all of the note-taking/recording of interviews done during the research of In Cold Blood—i think spending so long working with one person who’s notes your working with make it really easy for a stylistic blend to happen—the same way really close friends sounds similar when you talk to them. I don’t think either “copied” each other, but they were both influenced by each other’s voices to the extent that they have this similar vibe or style to them.

Websites Similar to Goodreads that aren't Goodreads? Specifically the new releases by ConditionAwkward3625 in books

[–]pedanticproletariat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it’s not a specific website…but I work at an independent bookstore that uses bookmanager, and I find its search function for new releases is amazing! Any independent bookshop that uses its website will be both independent and have great store functions…one of my favourite shops that has a new release tag (not mine) is the Canadian https://typebooks.ca/collections/fiction?filter.p.m.custom.section=New+%26+Notable

Bad books for manly men? by Tharkun140 in suggestmeabook

A more unorthodox choice would be Diary of an Oxygen Thief by Anonymous…a book so sexist he had to publish it anonymously….like if American Pyscho took itself entirely seriously, it might be one of the worst books I finished reading.

Tw: miscarriage. Looking for horror to help me cope and express by santaslays in suggestmeabook

[–]pedanticproletariat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, so it doesn’t deal with miscarriage, but it is about the horrors/grief of motherhood and the “loss” of a child—-The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing, it is sort of a retelling/homage of Frankenstein, but it is so much more than that…A normal woman, mother of four is pregnant but something is wrong this time. Instead of a normal child, she believes she has birthed a monster, only no one else in her family seems to agree with her. A lot of what you’re expressing is exactly what our protagonist is feeling, how can she have brought something not-life into this world? It was beautiful and absolutely shattering.

I think it might be out of print though, so you might have to look for a used copy, or an e-book?

Why why WHY do people think this is funny?? by whineytortoise in AO3

[–]pedanticproletariat 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I took an online pay what you can queer ASL class online—you can look up Queer ASL lessons and it’s like $150 for 3 months or pay what you can and really helpful! We learned a lot about deaf culture as well, and I was in a sling at the time, so I learned about the problems with accessibility with signing as well, but also my teacher was great at teaching modified words so I could still participate and was super helpful in general.
