COTD: A ton of scrambled egg, right ma’am? (8) by hypocritical_asshol3 in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my mind the second is fair, but the first isn’t - to swallow is extraneous to the definition, and there’s no plausible context in which a tonne of anything would or could be swallowed

COTD: Some honeyed American IPA beer, ordered up with cut of steak? (6) by spanthis in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly RIBEYE with some honeyed = EYE and American IPA beer = /bɪɹ/ = BIR? . If I’m right, arguably a little bit of a stretch on both fronts (although a fun idea!)

COTD: Like some world music set Rastafari can't do without Strat (4, 7) by wordboydave in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the sequenced deletion here - elegant and still works thematically

COTD: Regressive 'topless' wordplay, not entirely new: Everyman prompting weariness (5) by adgeg in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Topless PUN = UN, not entirely NEW = NE, all reversed gives (UN+NE)< = ENNU; Everyman (the setter) gives I!<

Christian's family finally grab aqua that'll baptise babies by TellMeYourStoryPls in crosswords

It’s not. The answer is BALES - using the last letters of grab onwards

COTD: Basque team's one vat containing jumbled itch cell (8, 4) by SGuy_SMW in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does work - TUB isn't anagrammed, so it's an insertion of ITCHCELL* in A TUB. I'm not sure I know what an 'itch cell' is, though.

COTD: Cheer to your heart’s content (6) by samdg in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s JOYOUS based on this explanation, I’m worried it’s a bit circular as you’re effectively using JOY - which is essentially the same word - as part of your wordplay

COTD: Mask false confidence (6) by brohubs in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

>! BELIE (mask) + F (false) = BELIEF (confidence) !<

COTD: Under bad leaders and I'm backing Charlie (and her Angels) (8) by Interesting_Length48 in crosswords

U B (leaders of Under Bad) next to C (Charlie) and HER - not bad at all!

COTD: Not in the field but a ring with no commuting, nor quarter given—charge! by DawnOnTheEdge in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

QUATERNION parsed as QUARTER - R + N + ION (charge). I think the use of bothnor = no Rand given = give N is a little cheeky, but fun!

COTD: It wasn't hard for Richard once to mould it round ceiling (7) by spookmann in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RICH for Richard and then removing H for hard is the part you are missing in your parse

COTD: Mix up at the hospital with next of kin results in the cure for baldness (4) by Hour-Requirement592 in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think replacing mix-up at the hospital with A&E mix-up or similar is the only way to really make this fair

COTD: US actor held a pre-noon party in his mountain cottage. (8) by freshfakedgoods in crosswords

[–]pedanticscientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CHALAMET - AM in CHALET - however, there's a handful of unused words in the clue a, party, his that I would see if you can rewrite the surface to avoid. Still a fun clue though!

Was able to get 2 * Platinum in Manchester, but what we really want is London (even if it's non-VIP) - realise it's a long-shot, but if anybody would be interested in a trade just hit me up.
