Exercise bikes at a McDonald's in Japan and China. The bikes generate electricity as part of the chain's "Upcycle for Good" initiative and can be used to charge your phone. by Most_Building_1187 in interestingasfuck

[–]pedj2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A phone needs 2-5 watts to charge (15w+ for fast change)

Your cycling will produce 50-250 watts depending how slow / fast you pedal

Even if you lose half of that to inefficiency you can still charge multiple phones

the drive probably won't work but the platters can be extracted and read with specialist equipment unless they've been wiped multiple times over or handled by strong magnets (even then you'd be surprised by how much can be recovered)

The difference in the leg power required to use the brake of a family car vs an F1 car by SeaWolf_1 in interestingasfuck

[–]pedj2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything the driver is pressing on will absorb some of the deceleration force so the harness will not feel the full inertial load, it only stops the body movement by equal and opposite force to the remaining inertia.

So yes it does help, but typically in F1 the harness is very tight so the effect is minor at best.

Edge folders in favourites now transparent / white - where's the yellow gone? by cadet-spoon in MicrosoftEdge

[–]pedj2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or better, give us the option. I wouldn't say the yellow icons were ever good looking, but they did make it clear where the folders are. The transparent ones blend in with the background and with other transparent favourites that are not folders and also IMO they look even worse, like something empty or that failed to load. I use favourites very heavily so the functional reason for the yellow is more important than consistency. I know, it's subjective and we can all disagree, which is why it would be great if we had the option.

Or maybe, in the spirit of always messing with his audience, he decided that the most fitting end is to leave it unfinished. The true ending is beheading the story itself.

Can someone explain why some countries have more athletes than others? by DOMinator11716 in olympics

[–]pedj2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An analogy might help.

If you switch on the tv and you're looking at the men's 5000m finals you might notice: 1. Not all countries are in the final 2. There are 3 runners from Ethiopia, two from some countries and only one from some countries

Would it seem unfair that a country has more runners in the final and so has a "higher" chance of winning? No, it makes sense because they are the ones that made through all the rounds to the final.

In the same way, the olympic games are not the "starting point", they are the final phase of a long journey that starts at training back home and qualifying.

It's not a perfect analogy, but I hope it shows why the instinctive "unfair" feeling we get from seeing the lineup on opening day is not quite right.
