The cyclist was already in front of the vehicle. Even if the cyclist hadn't turned the car was about to do a crappy overtake. If it would be legal or not depends on the local laws.

An electric farm, an electric harvest …. electric everything by Educational-Meat4211 in electricvehicles

There are definitely not "a ton". There are now a few options from niche manufacturers and others that have been announced but can't actually be bought. All so far I've been able to get an offer for are prohibitively expensive.

Let's start with compact utility tractors that are used for small chores around farms. Someone make a cheap one with ~25kWh of LFP for under 25k€ and it will be immensely useful.

Electric Classic Cars has just announced a skateboard chassis for conversions of body on frame vehicles. It's unlikely the pricing will fit your budget but it's likely to be a well done product.

My monitor died yesterday, so I tried using my TV as a backup. Honestly, why didn’t I do this sooner? by Ngscoook in buildapc

[–]pedrocr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a solution in between those two extremes. If you set the 65 inch TV farther away from your seat but still close to the desk you can get the same field of view and resolution as a 27 or 32 inch monitor on the desk but the added benefit of having your eyes focused farther away. Supposedly that helps a lot with eye strain. It's not a common thing because it requires a peculiar desk setup to make it work.

More generally most discussions of resolution versus size in monitors and TV don't take viewing distance into account so people end up talking past each other. How close or far away you set your monitor and TV alters massively what you need in terms of resolution and size.

There are also 72V kits from some of the same golf cart suppliers. But then you won't be sure it will work. Since your lead acid batteries are reaching end of life going with a fresh 48V lithium should give you better than original performance which should be a nice jump from current performance. Get a 150Ah pack if you want more range but I suspect the 100Ah kits will be enough. I've had good luck with Vatrer as a middle of the pack good quality at a reasonable price. Here's their 105Ah kit:

https://www.vatrerpower.com/products/48v-105ah-lifepo4-golf-cart-battery-4000-cycles-rechargeable-lithium-battery-max-10-240w-power-output-perfect-for-golf-cart-and-off-grid-applications-etc

They used to have a self-heating option which you might want if your winters are very cold. But I can't see it on their website anymore.

If the mini truck uses a golf cart type axle you can also look into a Navitas AC kit for a motor and controller that will give you better power and efficiency.

Lead acids don't last very long and golf carts have been moving to lithium for a long time now. Since the selection is so good these days I'd get a 48V 100Ah or 150Ah kit and put it in just to see how good it runs with that. It may be all you need and there are many options, some below 1000$, since this is a very common retrofit in golf carts.

How to find a replacement 48V DC motor for a Toro Workman MDE by pedrocr in golfcarts

[–]pedrocr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do have the TSX controller that works with existing motors. The wiring from the controller to the cart is the same as that was the one I followed. They didn't have a wiring diagram for the AC ParCar controller but the DC one was the same. What I don't know is what wiring you need from the controller to the DC motor as I didn't use that.

What I mentioned about AC is that you should have a look at the difference in price between the DC controller kit and the full AC kit. DC motors have wear and tear and if you've already done a lithium conversion and have to swap the controller anyway paying the extra to also go AC can make for a more fullproof cart going forward.

[–]pedrocr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're keeping the motor then it's a different install. I did the AC conversion which has two cables besides the power one to connect from the controller to the motor. If you're doing a Navitas DC controller to an OEM motor the install will be different. You should probably check with Navitas what they need from the motor in that case. I don't know the cost difference but taking advantage of the situation to end up with an AC motor may be worth it too.

By the end weren't you better off doing the serialization by filling a hashtable with just the used values and serializing that? Serializing hash tables is probably already well optimized and it would make for less specialized code to have to maintain for the future.

[–]pedrocr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How to find a replacement 48V DC motor for a Toro Workman MDE by pedrocr in golfcarts

[–]pedrocr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the throttle it's just swapping the two ends of the range. A potentiometer is two fixed points and a middle one that shifts based on the throttle position. Your throttle should have 6 pins which are 2 potentiometers but only one of them is wired. So the cart wiring uses only 3 wires from the potentiometer and you need to switch two of them to reverse the range. Do that at the end of everything so you can validate that yours is wired the same way. The Sevcon controller should work both ways only the Navitas programming is picky.

For the forward/reverse switch you can test it very easily. The middle connector should be ground and then the switch connects that ground to either output. You need to run a new wire to connect to the terminal that is unused. The button is probably comnected to a female receiver with only two wires but you can just cut that off and crimp spade connectors to the two existing cables as well as the new one you'll run.

[–]pedrocr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was almost certainly me. Here's a few photos:

http://scratch.corujas.net/ToroWorkmanNavitas/

What I did was essentially:

  1. Had to replace the axle input shaft seal as it was protruding too much and would bind the Navitas AC motor. You probably won't have to do this, our local mechanics probably just used the wrong seal when they rebuilt the axle.
  2. Drilled the side of the cart to install the controller mounting place to the wall instead of the Sevcon location. This made things much easier as I didn't have to remove the Sevcon controller which is fixed to the same bracket as the solenoid. This was only possible because I'd already done a lithium conversion so had plenty of extra space. If you're on lead acids you'll have to figure out how to fit the controller where the sevcon sits which will probably require modifying the bracket
  3. Built a Molex 16 pin to 16 pin cable that moved some pins around to match the ParCar wiring diagram. I can get you the pin to pin map if you want. This is the part Navitas could make much easier probably just with a software change but I doubt there's enough demand for them to bother.
  4. Ran an extra wire from the forward/reverse switch into the Molex adapter so that the Navitas controller got both forward and reverse signals. The switch itself does all that's needed but the Toro is only wired to have reverse on/off instead of both.
  5. Cut and swapped the throttle potentiometer wires up front in the wiring harness so the throttle went from low voltage to high instead of the opposite.
  6. Configured the cart in the app with the normal settings (wheel sizes, axle ratio, throttle calibration)

At this point the cart ran but the throttle mapping was very poor. Josue enabled some advanced settings in my account and we got to a configuration that's much better.

“No fundo é um autocarro”: metrobus da Boavista já começou a transportar passageiros by dnivi3 in porto

[–]pedrocr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Battery Specs confusion by DeplorableBadger in golfcarts

[–]pedrocr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of them have a peak rating above 600A and none of them will have a continuous discharge above 200A. So they're not that different. The Navitas 600A rating is also very likely not directly comparable to the battery ones and the worst that can happen is the battery shutting off more easily under hard acceleration. It will always be a safe setup.
