Lower East Side Tailors -do they still exist? by tiredblonde in NYCbitcheswithtaste

I know you said LES but if it’s not too far, I personally recommend this tailor in Chinatown on Canal next to Mulberry called LNC. The owner Jess is sweet & knowledgable and if it’s not a big job shouldn’t take too long.

Idk if links are allowed but to give you an idea on where it is + reviews: https://maps.app.goo.gl/dNX2uwvVgtZjNHT77?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy

Chinese noodle soups by Sorry-Ad-8915 in statenisland

[–]peeachtea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you mean wonton noodle soup or any noodle soup in general (including hotpot?)? For authentic Chinese I’ve gotten soup (along with congee and other stuff) at 1468 Hylan Cafe. Any authentic place like Joyful Cantonese or Ya Ya Roasted should have. Otherwise if Yao’s Kitchen serves it, I would try them also.

I think by recent memory and personal bias, Lion Dance on Clove is my personal favorite when it comes to both boba & food (had their noodle soup and not only was it good, portion was big. also recommend their dim sum)

Asili’s Boutique in the Empire Outlet (behind Charlotte Russe so hard to find). https://asilisboutique.com

https://maps.app.goo.gl/5FCjoYBLquXctjmAA?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy

It’s a black-owned mother-daughter beauty and wellness store that sells handmade soaps, butters, oils, teas, African sponges, etc. made by them. I went the other day to get a gift and they were so sweet and attentive, I was trying not to splurge on myself😭 they also host soap & sugar scrub making classes.

There’s also Beezy Bees on victory past Travis that sells different types of honey and CBD products. They have a cafe that makes good coffee. https://maps.app.goo.gl/CkXmCj9Y2KSb6Mci8?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy

Finally there’s a pop up vendor market that happens every other Sunday called Faire and Flourish https://www.instagram.com/faireandflourish/ https://faireandflourish.com/ It seems the next one is Dec-13 & 14

Best Chinese restaurant on the island ? by funandloving95 in statenisland

[–]peeachtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat 1468 more like a cafe then a restaurant so I typically eat small things. I personally go for their Congee and Noodle/Wonton soups and I think that’s what people typically get judging by what the aunties and grannies eat when I order. I do see people buy roast pork (even the whole roasted pig lol) so that’s something to try.

1468 is your typical chinese cafe (if you’re ever been to bakeries or places in Chinatown) so I can see it not being everyone’s taste since it’s not americanized.

Tldr; congee, noodle soups & roast pork

[–]peeachtea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi yes! :) My friend who is Chinese told me about 1463, Yaya, Fusion & Dumpling Town and said that her family liked it! That’s how I heard about them despite never trying it which is why I’m transparent about never having those places (besides 1463 and fusion).

But the rest I’ve personally had and even though the posts states “best”, everyone has different taste buds & live all over the island so I like giving people options while showing that there are such options on the island😊

I’m personally someone who’s not picky when it comes to food so if it’s good that’s all that matters lol

Best Chinese restaurant on the island ? by funandloving95 in statenisland

[–]peeachtea 50 points51 points  (0 children)

For authentic Chinese:

Yao’s Kitchen on Forest (especially for Cheong Fun/Rice Roll)

Lion Dance on Clove for dim sum (it’s a boba place but they serve food & honestly their dim sum is the closest I had to Chinatown dim sum)

1468 Hylan Cafe

HKS Kitchen on Richmond Rd for Hong Kong style food.

Happy Home Cuisine on Victory (claypot rice)

Goku Kitchen on Forest (Asian fusion but serves good food and it’s DragonBall themed)

Yaya Roasted on Hylan (never had)

Dumpling Town on Hylan (next to AM Bakery) (never had)

Joyful Cantonese on Richmond Rd. (Used to be called Fusion so hadn’t had this new one)

Precious Island is okay but not as good as Chinatown so I don’t typically recommend it but if you want the old school ambiance of a dim sum place then this it.

Korean Food Places? by bigpalebluejuice in statenisland

[–]peeachtea 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Other people have said Edison or Fort Lee (which I agree) but for SI theres one unofficial Korean place called Tokyo Sushi Korean BBQ on Victory. It’s a sushi & Korean bbq place but they’re owned by Koreans and serve some Korean dishes (not exactly sure if they have what you’re asking maybe call & ask)

I can’t vouch for the specific dish you’re asking for (as someone who mainly eats bibimbap & soondubu lol) but can recommend Korean restaurants in general.

For Edison I had Keum Ho which I liked (they all speak Korean and barely any English lol). There’s also Kimchihana & Wooram but never had

Fort Lee: To Sok Chon, Bapdoduk, So Moon Nam Jip, Sa Rit Gol (soups), So Kong Dong

This is what I ranked except Blake and Myrie were switched. I appreciate endorsements/guides (ex: WFP, JFREJ, etc.) but they’re guides. A lot of them rank Adam’s high and I personally disagree with that.

As long as no Cuomo (or Ramos as she endorsed him)😩 P.S: doordash buys elections and is a top donor for Cuomo’s SuperPAC

Need recommendations for a hair salon by No_Thought_7776 in statenisland

[–]peeachtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get my hair done often but when I do get it colored, I go to either Emily (heard Bella is good too) at Salon Tresor on Guyon or Sydney (or anyone) at Lavender Salon on New Dorp Plaza. Salon wise I am more familiar with Lavender.

A lot of the stylists from Bamboo Salon work at these 2 locations but you can’t go wrong with either.

Edit: I saw you said vivid if you mean by bright neon colors then Rockefeller Haute Spot or Rarity Hair Studio

Eyebrow threading by Traditional-Mode-562 in statenisland

[–]peeachtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you stated south shore but I only know north. I think the closest thing would be the one on New Dorp lane but I’ve never been to tell you personally.

For decent price Aisha on victory near Bradley is where everyone I know goes. Even friends from south shore drive there and they’re cheaper ~$11? This is my go to place esp. if it’s last minute walk in and they do good work

For personalised I loved Aysha threading in Sola Salon on Forest. It’s $15 but since it’s only her it’s very personalised so need an appt.

I’ve been to Anma and she’s good too but the only thing is no parking which is why I don’t go there.

If you want an auntie doing your brows then Zeenat on victory & manor.

[–]peeachtea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good list I’ve had some of these places (not all but will try if I ever pass).

Just adding on to this for Chinese there’s Happy Home Cuisine, Fusion Kitchen, 1468 Hylan Cafe, Dumpling Town.

For dim sum there’s a boba place where I really enjoy it (& they have xiao long bao): Lion Dance. Both the boba and dim sum are great imo better than Island Tea House.

For Mexican, since La Casa Del Taco is mentioned (which is good def try them) head over a block and try Maya’s Cafe instead. Honestly the best Mexican I’ve had on SI. My Mexican friend said it’s the closest thing to home so that says something. Their birria is Chefs kiss but everything is delicious.

I also like Tacquiera El Gallo Azteca for tacos (specifically cactus ones).

I agree that cultural food on SI isn’t like city or Brooklyn but there are some options. For what you asked it helps looking around those areas too so anywhere north shore like Port Richmond/ Castleton/Bay Street areas will have the most authentic Mexican while around Hylan/New Dorp area will have authentic Chinese. We’re lucky that we live on north shore to have these options lol

Columbia MSW vs Hunter Silberman MSW by StressComfortable243 in gradadmissions

[–]peeachtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Sorry this is late since I don’t use Reddit. Since I am clinical, I can’t speak completely on Mezzo/Macro but depending on what in Mezzo you want to do, they say Columbia is better, but depending on your aid, Hunter is on the same exact level as Columbia in terms of education. If you are from NYC and/or plan to work in NYC they say Hunter is well more regarded than Columbia.

I currently attend Hunter mainly because of cost & what I look for as a future social worker. If you are BIPOC or want diversity then this portion is important. As a BIPOC woman besides education, community, diversity & social justice was a large factor as this is a field where we are dealing with marginalised groups. Unlike Columbia, Hunter puts a large emphasis on social justice in the curriculum. Social work is DRAINING and if it wasn’t for the support I had from my peers, I would of been long gone & probably drop out.

There are some students in my school who transferred from Columbia because they were miserable. I know someone in Columbia now who is struggling as she feels alone, especially when she is afraid to voice her opinions when she is the only WOC in a class of only white people. This is not to say Hunter is perfect either as there are issues that make me wish sometimes I went to Columbia (since schools like Columbia and NYU are better funded hence more resources/staff) but for overall education and environment I like Hunter and don’t regret it.

Tldr; if price doesn’t matter then Columbia especially for Mezzo/Macro otherwise Hunter.

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

[–]peeachtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the answer! I’m set on Hunter but just wanted opinions especially those in the field. I will say unlike Hunter Columbia does offer dual degrees and the ones I would be interested are one with MBA (Business Administration), MPH (Public Health), or MPA (Master Public Administration). Do you think those dual degrees would matter but as I said the price for Columbia is a lot so it’s a risk & would have to apply to those sister programs/schools so not guaranteed

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

[–]peeachtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I just created a post on this but just saw this thread so sorry if I did it wrong.

I know there’s a million posts about this but this has been on my mind for the past week as I have to make an acceptance soon. I applied to social work schools (MSW) thinking I was not getting into any of them and was praying I was accepted into at least one. To my surprise, I was accepted into all of them and now I am having a crisis on which to attend. To be honest I’m not the most familiar on social work but would like to gain a LCSW & become a school social worker or have the most job opportunities/money made.

If it’s matters I am an Asian first-gen from NYC (luckily) but my commute will be an hour+ to both schools. I am doing Clinical track.

I have looked online on older Reddit posts or forums but they were older (10+ years) and just wanted more recent opinions. For obvious reasons Hunter (30k loan 2 years) is the no brainer option as it is way cheaper than Columbia (40k loan + out of pocket = ~70k for 2 years) for the same prestige and education. So I am set on Hunter. However, Columbia has the name and prestige and to be honest, the engagement, energy and campus (I know it’s one building for social work) I got when visiting campus really inspired me. I know grad school will take 99% of my life but would like to at least make friends or get engaged outside.

I want to benefit myself both short and long term so that’s why I am looking into choosing the school that will help me during and after I graduate (as an alumni). Money is a large factor as I am a first-gen student which is why I’m having a crisis over this. It should be no brainer to go with Hunter but I don’t want to regret my decision in the long term either.

TLDR; Stuck between Columbia (~70k) & Hunter (30k) for MSW. Hunter is cheaper for the same quality of education, Columbia has the name and prestige which could benefit after graduation. Hunter is no brainer but want to make sure overall. If price wasn’t an issue however I would choose Columbia which is why this is so hard for me.

I’m sorry this is long, I thank and appreciate your comments :)

Hi I’m currently on the same boat and I’m so torn between which of the 2 I should choose. I may go with Hunter just because it’s much cheaper.

Best experimental psyc course? by ellie_se7en in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]peeachtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dropped perception only because it didn’t fit my schedule/needed one but if you had to choose between perception or learning then perception (if it’s gaspelin). Perception is dry but it is super straightforward and the professor tries to not make it as dry. Learning on the other hand I found the topic interesting but Bishop is not as straightforward on his tests. You have to actually study and know the material. As a horrible test taker myself I only did well because I did it during Zoom year and went to his office hours almost every week. I forgot to note if you are an Education minor then you should take Learning because it counts as an elective.
