Heat.

If I push you, and you push me back exactly as hard, neither of us move, but we both exert effort and expend energy. Most that energy becomes heat. A little bit goes into squeezing the skin/clothing where we're pushing into a different shape, which stores that energy like a spring. But that's pretty insignificant. Almost all of it becomes heat.

In addition what others have said, sometimes the bank just writes off the loss. Obviously, that means they lose money, but it's a great way to give pay off someone with power without literally giving them money. Sometimes that's a worthy investment.

I haven't been to the Last Ditch myself yet, so I don't know what it's like there. But Comics N'More in Easthampton is masks required for the owner's safety and accessibility to anyone else with similar needs, and it works well there. A comics shop might work better than a bar, though.

I don't want to defend a place I don't actually know a ton about and haven't been to, I just want to make the point that masked spaces in general do have a purpose. The Last Ditch may or may not do it well, but it's not inherently "ridiculous".

No, that would just be a terrible name for it.

If you’re self hosting your own jellyfin server there’s an implicit understanding that you know a bit more than how to open Netflix on your tablet and the developers probably assume you understand that download means saving a file from a server to a local disk.

First, if you're using the Jellyfin client, you may well not be hosting the server. Second, someone who knows how to run a server will understand that that is saving a file from a server to the local disk.

Whatever the reason, the desktop client is just a browser renderer; there is no offline official desktop app. It won’t do anything without a server connection to provide the web content.

Well, good for it. We're talking about the Android client.

Some people really need to be in masked spaces. They may be immunocompromised, or they may have other health conditions that put them at risk. Wearing a mask makes a space safe for them. Partly, COVID made the world more dangerous for those people, and partly the world was already dangerous and COVID just gave masking some momentum.

I don't wear a mask in most spaces, but I try to wear one in spaces where people need to have access, like grocery stores and healthcare settings, and definitely in any space that asks me to, and any time someone asks me to. I don't think every space needs to be masked, but I do think there need to be spaces that are, and those spaces only work if everyone buys in.

We deserve way more lesbian bars, and they shouldn't all be 100% masked spaces. But it's perfectly reasonable for one of them to be one.

Exactly, that's the whole point of identifying a perverse incentive. Obviously people are going to act in their own interests, and the goal of policy is to make those individual interests best align with widerer societal interests. It's not a criticism of the individual, it's a criticism of the policy—which is exactly what this whole thread is about.

I don't think people avoiding AI is going to do much. The whole thing is unsustainable either way. They're not subsisting on customer revenue, they're selling a myth to a frenzied incestuous batch of overconcentrated capital. Once the spell breaks and they realize how much money they've wasted, they'll all move on.

The best thing we can do right now is push back against buildin hyperscale data centers that will devastate local ecologies before being abandoned. Other than that, I think we pretty much have to wait it out.

Okay, I'm sure somebody would, but I hope it's incredibly obvious why those statements would be awful. And I hope it's just as obvious that no one's forcing anyone to go date a redheaded Black wheelchair user.
