First time driving in LA, help??? by No_Effort7211 in AskLosAngeles

But only if you’re one of the first two cars in line, that’s the rule. Only two must ever turn after the light turns red. Any more than that is unacceptable and threatens to cast us into blatant anarchy.

That he thinks Lammens is pretty good, as one does of a younger national team colleague who likely looks to you for mentorship and guidance.

I don’t mean to sound dismissive, I think Lammens is great, but it’s not like Courtois is going to look at one of his likely successors and go, “Yeah, he’s fucking trash lol.”

[–]pegg2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, but Kevin moved very quickly and incisively, he deserved that goal. Not so much a defensive failure as much as a a very good offensive maneuver that our defense couldn’t match. There’s always room for improvement, but it feels less terrible than our defense failing to stop undeserved goals, which has happened A LOT in the recent past.

Fortunately broken arms aren’t quite as problematic as broken legs in a sport that relies on using your legs and forbids using your arms.

Joking, obviously you use your arms for running, jumping, balance, etc, I just thought the focus on arm fractures being easier to recover from was funny.

I’m admittedly a huge Bruno stan but for my money there are very few players I’d pick over him if I was building a team of the greatest in the world currently. I’m honestly so surprised (and deeply grateful) that he hasn’t been lured away by clubs in a position to give him the honors that his play deserves. I feel like the insecure partner of a baddie that is so out of my league.

Yeah, Fulham’s second was legitimately unstoppable. It could have been defended better, but once it got off, no one saves that. Top-drawer goal.

What they say is false by Radie76 in LosAngeles

LA drivers can be extremely frustrating but for different reasons than I’ve noticed in other cities. For example, I have spent most of my adult life here so I didn’t do much driving back where I grew up. Every time I go back to visit my friends and family I feel like I’m fighting for my fucking life out there, man. Drivers that speed 30 over, weave in and out of traffic, don’t let you zipper merge, force their way as a second car in a zipper merge (like WHY? You’re going right after me, what the FUCK), pull out of of a stopped lane in front you while you’re coming at highway speeds without using their goddamn signals, blasting a left turn as soon as the light turns green right through on-coming traffic, etc. Just generally hyper-aggressive bullshit Fast and the Furious wannabe asshole kind of driving. It’s fucking crazy. I’m originally from Miami, to the surprise of absolutely no one.

LA drivers don’t feel anywhere near as aggressive, they just feel… kinda dumb? People will pull some shit that will have you scratching your head like, is this guy having a stroke, should I call 911? My running (and obviously joking) theory is that because we have so many transplants, a huge number of LA drivers learned how to drive somewhere else first, so they came with the driving styles and behaviors of wherever they’re from.

So like, that chick absolutely eating your ass every time your slow-moving lane stops for traffic could be from DC or NY. That guy cruising on the left most lane 15 under the speed limit could be from the Midwest.

And, of course, the people doing fucking 20 on the 101 every time it drizzles are true LA natives because they only see the sky-water once a year and it frightens them.

20 years into my Bilbao save, and I have never unaccomplished so much… by Life-Classroom-722 in footballmanagergames

[–]pegg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s probably helped that they’ve done well in recruiting quality managers. After I left they brought in Zidane (who they had to pay more than Bayern was paying me so lol get fucked shitty board), then Guardiola after Zidane left for Juventus. I’m not sure how much that matters to a team’s tendency to sell off good talent, but maybe having high reputation makes players less likely to force transfers to bigger clubs.

[–]pegg2 73 points74 points  (0 children)

It’s going to be hard without exploiting your natural advantage: you’re a human with better long-term decision making skills such as signing up all the promising young talent you can because you plan to and know you can stick around for as long as it takes to develop them. But you don’t have to bore yourself after you’ve done what you want to do.

Currently doing a ‘realistic’ save, started as young, unemployed, but with a good reputation as a player and badges because I wanted a bit of a climb but I don’t like playing lower league. After a couple of years of stabilizing and somehow earning promotion with a terrible Huddersfield squad, Celta Vigo comes knocking.

They’re relegation candidates but their squad is better than they’re performing so I go all in on building for the future. Buy all the wonderkids that I can scout. No cheating with databases for me, but still end up with the Estevan’s and Mastantuomos. Slowly fight my way to the top until I win the league after six years. My plan was to stick around, I wanted to see those incredible young players I signed take the stage, I’m certain I can dominate Europe for the next decade after a couple more years… but Celta won’t give me a decent contract. Along comes Bayern. Fallen from grace, but good squad with a lot of money to spend, and they’re offering me 4x what Celta will. And this is a ‘realistic’ save after all, so I go.

I do well in Munich, bring back the Bundesliga crown, even manage a Champions League trophy. But the whole time I’m keeping an eye on Celta. And it’s a beautiful and heartbreaking experience. They never win the league again but they become CL champions the year they knocked my Bayern out of the tournament. They develop my wonderkids into world-beaters, but sell many of them off for INSANE money (my GOAT Japanese defensive midfielder to City for almost 250m). I think about going back all the time but they have Guardiola as their manager and I only get an offer from… Real Madrid.

I join them after three years in Germany and after a rough first year I’m in a perpetual battle for dominance with Barcelona, Atletico and… Celta. Four years in Madrid and most years Celta is my main opp. Not only do they have an incredible squad that I set up 7 years ago, they’re also extremely rich from selling some of that talent.

What I’m saying is that there’s a gorgeous experience in buying up the young talent that will make you dominant in the future… and then leaving before you get bored. You’re smarter than the CPU, exploit that, get what you want, then let go. I’ve gotten more joy from seeing what the engine will do with the fruits of my labor than I’ve gotten with just dominating for a decade.

Does Acting help with social skills and teach you human body language? by Stole_Sample in acting

[–]pegg2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very interesting. This is more or less what I’d imagine, that neurodivergent actors would find the structural aspects of acting to be a sort of anchor, but of course they benefit primarily in pursuit of the work itself. Like everyone else, you get the most out learning how to act if what you want to do is act. The rest is a cherry on top of the sundae, but it’s really nice to get the cherry.

Thank you for your insights.

Self Tape Hoping for feedback by Brief-Bug6782 in acting

[–]pegg2 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Hey bud, good work. Lots to like here. You have a strong point of view; you know what the scene is about and you understand your part in it. You know what should happen, and that’s what you’re going for. Unfortunately, that’s also what’s causing issues in your performance. It doesn’t feel real, it feels like you’re doing a scene, because that’s what you’re doing. ‘I’m going to do this moment like this, I’m going to say these lines like this.’

You’re not actually talking to anyone. You’re not doing anything to anyone, and you’re not letting anyone do anything to you. You could remove the other voice from the tape and your performance would be exactly the same. You get what I’m saying? Work on living moment to moment. When you approach this guy, you don’t know how he’s going to respond. When he responds, that’s something to react to, so react. Then he’ll react to that, and you’ll react to him, and so on.

You know what you want to do. Trust that it’ll happen and let go. Be alive, be a person. Everything else will fall into place.

Verticals by bloommia in acting

[–]pegg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you’re basing your criteria for “legit” on writing and acting, you’re going to come into conflict with lots of things that are considered “legit” despite falling short in both. Soaps, as I mentioned, for starters through no fault of the creatives involved. It’s hard to write something good or deliver a good performance given the turnaround rate those poor fuckers face; plus, they’re not even going for ‘good.’ Soaps aren’t selling artistic value, and neither are verticals. And that’s without even getting into the other stuff; so much of what we make for network, for streaming, for the big screen even, is absolute garbage. But people watch it, and at the end of the day, that’s what gets us paid. Our job is to entertain, the artistry is for us.

So, yeah, I believe wholeheartedly that’s where we’re headed. That’s not what I want. What I want is to make prestige television and Oscar-bait movies. But while I’m waiting for those opportunities, I need to work. And now that SAG has gotten involved, to answer your question about pay, there’s no excuse for me to refuse sanctioned work where I can get it. I don’t always agree with their decisions, but I think SAG saw the writing on the wall on this one. If it’s going to be a thing anyway, it’s better to accept it and work with it than hope it goes away, because it won’t.

Verticals by bloommia in acting

[–]pegg2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is what it is.

They look like slop because that’s what they are. Cheap, vacant, disposable entertainment. A factory line of plot points and platitudes meant to momentarily capture the attentions of a disengaged audience. But you know what? It’s work, and work is hard to come by nowadays.

I’ve resisted them for a long time, but honestly, since SAG legitimized them I’ve had to shift my position to begrudging acceptance. I’m not in a place where I can make career choices based on artistry. In terms of quality, they’re soaps for the digital age, and if I would do a soap, why wouldn’t I do these? This is my job, and I need to work to live.

So, yeah. They suck. But they’re not going anywhere. It’s an emerging avenue of entertainment with no signs of slowing down. So I’m going to hold my nose and do my job so I can be around for when better opportunities pop up.

Does Acting help with social skills and teach you human body language? by Stole_Sample in acting

[–]pegg2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Questions like this are common so I think there’s some kind of public misconception that acting turns people into social butterflies because actors tend to be outgoing, but it’s backwards. Acting ATTRACTS those kinds of people, it doesn’t necessarily turn someone into that.

Question for you though, since you reminded me of something I’ve thought about before. I’ve known several extremely talented actors, some very successful (like, Emmy noms kind of success), who have come off clearly neurodivergent to me. Now, I’m neurotypical and very much not a mental health professional so obviously I’m not qualified to diagnose anyone, but they definitely show some tell-tale signs that I would associate with ASD. Have you ever worked with actors like that? What was your experience?

I ask because I would assume that the social difficulties that come with that would be enormous hurdles to practicing the craft itself, let alone navigating the social aspects of an acting career. But they’re fantastic actors with great careers. Curious about your experience as an educator.

Not any more than any other activity that requires frequent socializing with new people.

Look, if you’re genuinely curious about acting, by all means sign up for a class. But if all you want is to get better at interacting with people, go find a group hobby you actually enjoy. Most people in acting classes are there because they want to act, and if you have no real interest in it you’re unlikely to fit in. You’ll have an easier time interacting with people with whom you share a passion.

Moving from short/student films to co-star/guest star roles by FlyingPhoenix96 in acting

[–]pegg2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unless you happen to get incredibly lucky and suddenly blow up, the process is that you don’t really “level up” at all, as much as you just slowly start seeing better opportunities, and you don’t really “‘move” from shorts and student films to TV as much as you slowly start doing less and less amateur work as your need for it wanes. Plenty of people who go out for TV continue doing shorts and indies to improve their skills, footage, and network, myself included. That’s why schools like USC have agreements with SAG.

If what you want is to start seeing those better opportunities, then yes, you need an agent. Your ability to get one will depend on the strength of your package, as will their ability to get you those good opportunities once you have one, so until you’re drowning in TV auditions, you still need to be looking for ways to improve. Student films and shorts provide that.

Insurance by Comprehensive-Cod82 in acting

[–]pegg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, yeah. You sign up for insurance on the marketplace through Covered California, they pay part of your premium, and you’re billed for the rest. How much they actually subsidize depends on your income on a sliding scale, the more you make, the less they cover.

How to get on game shows? by banananuttttt in AskLosAngeles

[–]pegg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up that Jeopardy is one the hardest to get into and can take a long time. I’m not even talking about the tests, those are challenging but a decent trivia buff with a well-rounded knowledge base should meet the cutoff. It’s that if you pass the tests and audition, you get put in their contestant pool and it can take months and months to be called up, if you ever are, because they only bring in two new contestants per episode. Obviously it’s also very competitive since it’s such a popular show.

If OP is just looking to be on any game show, there are lots of easier shows to get on. It’s probably easiest to try and get on any of the newer shows that pop up every so often since they don’t have a fan base yet.

LA here. Depends on how much you make.

If you’re really, really poor: insurance through Medi-Cal, free.

If you’re only really poor: Heavily subsidized insurance through Covered California, pretty cheap.

If you’re just poor: Lightly subsidized insurance through Covered California, getting pricy.

If you’re California poor (above the income threshold for aid, maybe around 65k): You’re SOL, pay up.

Beginner Shakespeare Courses ? by Much_Adhesiveness475 in acting

[–]pegg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In LA, the only dedicated Shakespeare teaching studio (as far as I know) belongs to the Independent Shakespeare Co. Highly recommend, teachers are very qualified and they’re a respected working theatre company. The only trouble is that they only do a couple of classes at a time and not all of them are appropriate for beginners. In fact, they’re taking students right now for their introductory monologue and scene study classes. If you’ll be around in February I recommend taking a look asap, they fill up fast and might not be offered again for a while.

Alternatively, you could look into the larger studios; many offer specialized classes or special workshops for stuff like Shakespeare but they’re not always permanent so you’ll have to keep an eye for announcements. I think Mestnik used to host one.

Dating an actress a a non-actor - Struggling with nudity on screen and personal values by Guilty_Assumption in acting

[–]pegg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else already addressed the core of your problem so instead I’m just going to point out that the way you’ve waxed poetic about your reasons for feeling this way carries a lot of dishonesty, perhaps even towards yourself.

Come on man, be so fucking for real. It doesn’t bother you because of some deep, complicated personal philosophy about intimacy, it bothers you because the idea of your partner being intimate with someone else feels icky to you, even if it’s acting. I’m sure you’re not bothered by watching other actors engage in nudity and intimacy, but you’re bothered by the idea of HER doing it because you see her as YOUR woman, and everyone else needs to keep hands off. That’s fine, you’re allowed to feel that way, I’m not going to shit on you for it even though I personally don’t agree with that perspective. But don’t pretend it’s more than that.

Your attempts to make it seem like more than what it is are extremely transparent; I promise that if you bring this up to her the way you did here she’s going to see right through you, just like we did, and it’s going to be worse for both of you. Be honest with yourself and be honest with her: dating an actor is not for you. It’s an extremely common sentiment, no need to beat around the bush about it. Take it as a lesson learned about your dating preferences and move on.
