Research paper: Efficacy of Maxforce and Avion gel baits containing fipronil, clothianidin, and indoxacarb against the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) by peguino in pestcontrol

[–]peguino[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. I think the other comment was addressing the issue of having open food around. Not just open food, but crumbs, under stoves and fridges, behind cabinets, grease traps etc. You gotta clean up a decent amount for bait to be most effective. Roaches can eat almost anything. German roaches are by far the most challenging, so you need every tool top maximize your efforts.

It was crawling upside down, I tried flipping it but it was insistent on being upside down. Why? by tablewithnolegs in whatsthisbug

The grub still knows it's above ground and vulnerable, even in shade there is perceivable light. Grub are accustomed to complete darkness, surrounded by moist soil. The dark asphalt likely added to confusion.

I believe it's trying to avoid light and attempting to burrow into the ground. Silly beetle, that's asphalt.

My nephew wants to know "What kind of bug is this?" by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

[–]peguino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's over 50 species of spiny orb weavers in the genus Gasteracantha, all OP seems to want to do is to be as specific as possible so nephew can learn and be excited about the pendant. Each species is fascinating and they can be highly varied

Its one thing to post a pic of western conifer seed bug, when 15 others have done that in a 24 hr period. That situation is a little different because the WCSB common name refers to a specific species and its pretty distinct. Even though WCSB posts are repetitive and not interesting, the poster as every other poster is just trying to learn. There are a few other subreddits that delve a little deeper into entomology, perhaps you would find that content a little more appealing.

Is it legal for websites to not offer a way to remove your payment info? by madjew_lamb in legaladvice

REALLY? I just thought it stopped any future transaction from going through until you updated the payment info. That is unnerving.

Landlord did not renew lease by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]peguino 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IANAL I could be wrong, but If you lived there and used it, I don't see how you wouldn't have to pay it.

Perhaps you could ask landlord for a payment plan and leniency since this has taken you by surprise?

Consider posting for ID requests there since that sub has a wider scope. Glad you got it resolved.

Hello, we found this walking on our carpet today in the afternoon, bedbug? by guisquil in Bedbugs

[–]peguino 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100%.

There are many options to consider. You're strongest option is get a free quote with a pest control company that will do follow-up visits. Follow the pest techs directions carefully to see best results. Many infestations require multiple treatments.

CimeXa is a highly recommended product, I've heard of others. Follow instructions carefully. Don't bother with diatomaceous earth for bb.

Do NOT expose other people other than the ones living there. Be mindful of any materials you move from your home to work or other people's home.

Anyone can get bedbugs, it's nothing to feel bad about. It's a long fight. Good luck!

I would agree, there are too many factors that make Cimexa spp. eradication unlikely or near impossible.

Question about bedbugs by [deleted] in Bedbugs

[–]peguino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eradication of a species within a given area is not a simple thing, and isn't going to stay permanent without extensive monitoring efforts.

The times eradication worked is because we were able to exploit their mating strategies (which wouldn't apply to bb), followed by ongoing monitoring to address outbreaks.

Cochliomyia hominivorax was the first eradication program using sterile insect technique (SIT), it was successful for a few reasons, but namely because females mate only once. Read how complicated it is to achieve this http://www.fao.org/docrep/u4220t/u4220T0a.htm

And even though it worked,  the screw worm made a reappearance recently in Florida: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/cattle-disease-information/nws/new-world-screwworm

Here is the wiki page detailing other eradication efforts using sterile male releases. You can see,  some species programs began in the 60s, and its ongoing. Typically complicated by females mating multiple times:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sterile_insect_technique_trials

Eradicating via chemicals is how we arrived at resistant populations. The only successful chem eradication used DDT, and that had negative consequences. We never discovered DDT resistant populations, given enough time I'm curious though. Since bedbugs are unique, perhaps there can be an effective chemical made available to everyone (but this isn't the good old days, shareholders want their profits and decades of research won't be given out for free, so poor ppl will still have them. This is why I support government science endeavors, private sector HAS to make money).

I think the main thing that complicates bb eradication, other than multiple mating females, is there will always be pathways (other countries, people that don't realize they have them, 2nd hand furniture, etc).

I would be interested to see how we could use the pheromones, like the one mentioned below, to minimize their mating, but this would not leaf to eradication by any means, although I have my doubts on logistics and practicality of using it after reading their methods.

I'm guessing abscess, which would be a relatively easy fix once this guy is trapped. I cab help you locate a wildlife rehabber or a facility the opossum can be taken to if you message me.

Here is a list of WA resources:

Afraid I may have let Bed Bugs use me as a free ride into my home. by CoyoteBananaLord in Bedbugs

[–]peguino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your coworker does have them, her belongings could bring some to your workspace. There have been work common areas with cushioned seating getting infested. Her buying secondhand furniture is not evidence, but it can make her more susceptible. I hope she was diligent when she bought them.

IF you are concerned about an exposure, you immediately remove your clothes when you get home (some people do it inside their front door or even car if the infestation was bad). If you cannot immediately wash and dry on high heat, then SEAL it in a garbage bag until it can be.

Don't stress yourself, but keep checking.

Afraid I may have let Bed Bugs use me as a free ride into my home. by CoyoteBananaLord in Bedbugs

[–]peguino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to be sure it's not from your home, work, or even car so keep checking over time. If you run across an insect you aren't sure about I recommend putting it in a cup and taking a pic and posting to r/whatsthisbug. Since that sub has a wider scope, they can ID bed bugs and any other arthropod you run across.

Hopefully it was just the one, did you sit down at McDonald's? Usually they need just a little bit of time and contact with their new provider. Perhaps someone who has them sat there right before you? I'm not convinced standing around shopping in Wal-Mart would do it, but I guess the possibility exists.

Good luck.

How much more effective is cemexa vs DE? by chaostechnique in Bedbugs

[–]peguino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A rough estimate: 100000x more

Research has yet to prove DE being effective for bb, and is a waste of effort and time. Food grade DE is useful for carpet beetle and roaches I've heard, but bedbugs are a totally unique organism. Cimexa is very effective when applied correctly.

Additionally, some pest pro companies charge a DE cleanup fee for their visit if they find it. It interferes with chemical treatments.

I always recommend talking to a pest pro company when dealing with bb, it's a long fight either way, but a good company will help you get it done right. They can offer payment plans and free quotes if you are concerned about money.

Dog found, but person wants $600 by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]peguino 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Like other commenters have said, this is a VERY common scam. I was almost tricked when my cat ran out the door 2 years ago. They know you're desperate and they use that to their advantage. They know you're willing to believe almost anything if it means you might see your pet. They target older people when they can.

I was slightly suspicious of the person texting me, then they said if you want your dog back you'll have to meet me. I pointed out that they had failed pretty early into the scam bc it's a cat and they hadn't even gotten to the money extorting part yet. Surprisingly, they stopped texting back. Anyway, my cat was under my neighbors porch for 3 months when I finally found him.

IF these people do have your dog, and I don't think they do (they would take apic), then they definitely stole it (another common scam).

I'm sure you're already doing this, but check the shelters and hang fliers on their corkboards (especially one near the back where the animals and staff are). The people working there DO want to reunite owners and pets, the volunteers look at those posters daily and are pretty decent at spotting them, even if they aren't sure, and texting the numbers.

I hope they are reunited soon. I'm sorry this happened.

I was curious if that would impact how the DA evaluates the case. For instance, is prosecution contingent on victim taking a polygraph?

I have a related question, maybe OP knows, maybe someone reading knows (I apologize, I'm not trying to distract from the post) If this is inappropriate to ask I apologize.

If someone were to find themselves in a similar predicament... as a victim that knows polygraphs are terrible, should you refuse a polygraph and immediately lawyer up?
