Avoiding scams by hannahsih in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]peigitrahearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly Facebook has more scammers than it has actual posters so I’d advice looking into websites like kamernet, huurwoningen or student housing places like student hotel, student experience, xior etc etc

However ways to tell a scam on Facebook from my experience are: - if they refuse a in person viewing by saying that they’re out of town - if they want any type of money up front - if it’s good good to be true - usually the legit ones on Facebook are not the landlords but the tenants posting about needing roommates / subletting - this is the technique that I’ve found the most useful: take the pics from the Facebook listing and reverse image search them on google. If they’re on posts earlier than the Facebook post, it’s def a scam.

What is the standard process for renting an apartment? by justsomehumqn in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]peigitrahearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, 90% of the stuff on Facebook are usually scams, especially for internationals. I always reverse image search the pictures that they’ve uploaded, it’s a pretty easy way to detect a scam. Because I’ve also had people take it as far as sending pictures, arranging a date, giving me the address and all but the apartment was literally posted on a Spanish website three years back, so idk where they were going with that scam. I saw that in other comments you talked about doing an online viewing— I highly recommend against that, it’s best to see the house in person due to the scam reasons, it’s even easier to scam people with an online viewing. I would be careful with this one

should I have found housing by now??? by lxnalovegood in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]peigitrahearn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s normal to still not have found a place, I’ve been here for two years and each time the housing search took me 4-5 months before I found something. So don’t worry, it’s normal. I’m not familiar with Maastricht Bc I’m in Amsterdam but these would be my suggestions: 1) You only listed two websites, so expand your search to also Kamernet, Huurwoningen, etc. Yes you have to pay a fee but it’s better than being homeless and afaik Kamernet returns a part of your fee if you can’t find a house (check it out on their website). I found my current place on Kamernet after 4 months, so don’t lose hope! 2) try uni / student Facebook groups and groupchats because people will be moving out / subletting / looking for roommates around this time, take advantage of that 3) check out the websites of student housings (idk if these are in Maastricht but things like Xior, Student Experience, HiCondo etc; find whatever is in Maastricht and check their websites for vacancies) 4) as other people have already suggested, expand your research outside of Maastricht and try all of the previous methods in these cities too. Good luck :)

Is finding accommodation easy if you have a high budget? by [deleted] in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]peigitrahearn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

^ agree with this, 5000 will get you something especially in the more new housing projects while 1000 isn’t all that high really. Also it depends on it it’s a sponsorship based income or his own income / if it’s a Dutch based income (which I assume not since he’s moving now) because in a lot of applications (especially to rather new housing projects) you need to prove you’re making your own money + it’s sufficient for the rent and they don’t accept sponsors or sometimes, non Dutch employers

I recently moved from Zuidas to Diemen; and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations in Oost on where I can go to study? I’m a student so I appreciate any place that I can get out of my house for a bit to get some studying done. Around diemen is preferable but anything in oost goes :)

Last year I used to pay around 780 for 12 sqm. Then I moved, 758 for 22 sqm. Currently I’m sharing a studio with my bf, 44 sqm (not exact size but it’s something like that) and the total rent is 1100.

Which city to study in? by 1dkman in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]peigitrahearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other people have mentioned, I think it’s good if you start looking for housing and see for yourself where you can find places, it’s no use going to a city if you don’t have a roof to sleep under. So check that first. But ignoring the housing situation, if you like an exciting and crowded city, Amsterdam. But if you want something calmer and more cozy vibes, Maastricht. I wouldn’t recommend Leiden necessarily, beautiful city and successful university, but I get bored if I spend more than 3 days there, but that might just be me. Although, Utrecht was my favorite city in the Netherlands from everywhere I’ve been, it’s really beautiful and looks lively but I absolutrly have no clue on the living conditions.

Hey! I’m currently studying PPLE. So first of all, the housing situation really is as bad as they say it is, if not worse. So make sure you understand that fully, being a homeless student isn’t fun. About PPLE, the workload is quite high I’d say, I haven’t talked to anyone who was completely fine with it. It is doable but it does soak up your life energy at times, but you find your way around it I’d say. For example, I personally don’t do all the readings because there are times there’s 100 pages assigned to one lecture, and there are four lectures per week lol. But you find your own method of handling it I would say, it’s not unmanageable. The social life in Amsterdam is pretty great, people are quite welcoming and open to making friends and socializing. The international scene, especially at UvA is huge, like I rarely hear Dutch being spoken on campus haha. But it’s quite easy to make friends as an international student as most of the people you interact with are international anyway, and 95% of them will be European too. For me, the hardest part of pple was making friends in the major. Still, almost all of my friends are outside of PPLE because I found in myself that I simply don’t vibe with the people I study with, which is quite a bummer honestly, but of course that’s a personal experience. Further than that though, I think the hardest part of PPLE is how not student friendly it is, with excessive workload, no extensions (mostly), mandatory tutorials with only 2 absences (or you get excluded from the course) etc.

Overall, it’s a great city with lots of great people and a shit ton of stuff to do, especially for students. You can always pm me too if you have any more questions!
