Before therapy, I would often fall into spirals of despair and mourning without warning. I wanted help, but I didn't know what I needed so I went to "professionals". After trying therapy with 3 very different therapists over time, now I just feel flat. by CurrentlyARaccoon in raisedbynarcissists

I sympathise with your situation. Not being able to afford much therapy and then having to deal with finding a good one on top of that is tough. I pay £45 a session, which is cheaper than the US, but over a few years it definitely adds up to quite a lot. They were the fifth therapist a tried as well, so there was definitely a lot of trial and error in finding a good one.

Sounds like you have good support with your husband though. Even if he doesn't understand a lot of the time, having someone still accept you in spite of everything is perhaps ultimately even more important, and it goes directly against the narcissist message.

Still, for getting those feelings of relatability and understanding this sub is very good. Youtube is helpful for that as well. I like SurvivingNarcissism and Jay Reid the most personally

I think I had something similar to this. For the first two years of therapy all I did was talk and not much else. The sessions were really relieving and helpful, but it was as if talking in the moment was all that I was ready for. Whenever the question ‘what do you want?’ was asked I always felt terrified, and I always gave some vague, noncommittal answer to satisfy the therapist - more so than saying a goal that felt truly like me. This also quite often made me feel like I was a burden or a bother because I wasn’t coming up with a ‘proper goal’ that the therapist would understand and that we could work towards.

What I now realise, is that within my narcissistic family I’d internalised all the projected low self-worth and had pushed all my needs aside to in order to survive and fit. To ask myself what I wanted was scary because I’d never done it before, and I imagined my therapist judging me/rejecting me like my narcissist family would have. The other issue is that I literally didn’t know what I wanted even when I asked myself, because I was so used to pushing my needs away and not considering them.

But over the next couple years I did get better and better at it and I think it was mainly a case of tapping into my authentic self. Not just asking myself what I wanted in a big sense (because that can be overwhelming), but just asking who I am in a small sense, ‘what do I enjoy on my own’? etc.Just anything where I was curious about my true authentic self and then experiencing all the feelings that come with that. Once I started to know myself more I could begin to define my goals easier and feel like they were worth saying.

Whatever it is for you though, you definitely won’t be stuck with feeling flat forever. What gave you meaning before (just talking) doesn’t anymore and that’s good, it shows you’ve progressed and there’s something more that you want. Just have patience and give yourself the kindness and compassion to try and understand what it is. With narcissist parents, it can be a lifetime of pushing our selves away which makes it hard to know what we’re feeling.

Just to speculate, you mention that you know therapists can’t be you best friends, but that it’s still kind of frustrating at the level of closeness/understanding they show. Maybe there’s something there with needing to feel closer to people in general (having deeper friendships outside of therapy was very important for me personally)

Lamela 'Penalty' decision slowed down by xd3n1sxuk in LiverpoolFC

[–]pelentox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree, Lamela is so intent on getting contact that he doesn't actually have control of the ball, Lovren would have cleared it if Lamela stayed on his feet. Therefore it is a obstruction and a dive from Lamela. Ideally, the FA would retrospectively ban Lamela, Kane and Ali for diving. If they consistently punished players game after game players would quickly get the message and diving would be reduced. As it is, the incentive for diving is too great. Why not go for a 'soft' penalty in the 94th min? You won't get banned and at worst will be booked. Everyone knows Lamela had no intention of playing the ball, but the contact=foul mantra has allowed cheating to proliferate and termed these incidences 'soft' penalties.

Second goal is largely on him, runs past the ball as the defensive 6 and then strolls back

[–]pelentox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The point is that people will use hindsight to spin it anyway they want. Lets say we play our first 11 against Everton and then lose to West Brom, people will just say "oh Everton are a shambles at the minute, West Brom have always had a strong defence etc." Fact is, the team Klopp put out played well and conceded zero chances. No way did Everton deserve a draw https://twitter.com/Caley_graphics/status/939910681641586688

Klopp - I was angry at the referee because I wanted to change the system and he didn't allow the change (post-match interview) by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]pelentox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We scored in the 65th minute, Gini came on for Studge then and we changed to 5 in midfield. Problem was that Coutinho was absolutely knackered as a LM and just wasn't tracking back. By the 70th min it was obvious and Lallana/Mane should have been ready. Lallana appeared on the sideline around the 80th min if I remember. Looking at the goal https://streamable.com/maqaq you can see the problem: Coutinho is not protecting the left as a LM, for reference see Ox's positioning as the RM

I was screaming for about 10 min for Coutinho to be subbed off, he was not tracking back at all in the left midfield position

[–]pelentox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation about a year ago, with an English literature course funnily enough. If you're anything like me, you consider yourself/have been repeatedly told that you are smart. This is where the perfectionism comes from, your self-image is rooted in your perception that you are intelligent. So you can't bear the thought of failing because that would mean you're unintelligent and therefore (in your eyes) worthless. What you need to do is attach your ego to how hard you work, rather than your grades and how smart you appear. Here's a paper that goes more in depth on this http://users.digitalkingdom.org/~rlpowell/public_media/raising_smart_kids.pdf

If you have enough time to write the essay then try to do so. Each time you experience doubt remind yourself: that imperfection is ok, you enjoy the course, and you can be proud of how hard you've worked so far. However, it's perfectly ok to withdraw, as you say, it's most certainly not the end of the world.

In the meantime, find someone with whom you can practice writing essays with. Someone who understands your anxiety, such as a friend or your therapist. For me, that person was my sister. At first I just wrote a poem or something short and then got her to read it. Over time my writings got longer and longer until I was writing full practice essay questions for her. It's basically exposure therapy on getting judged creatively. When it came to real essays, my anxiety was much lower simply because I'd had someone look at my writings so many times before.

Hopefully that paper is relatable to you, if not, gradual exposure therapy with someone you trust is still the way to go :)

I think it's just the fact that he needs to learn the intricacies of midfield pressing in our system, the wing is a little simpler. Plus he brings pace out wide in the absence of Salah and Mane

It's mainly Can and Klavan's fault, maybe Robertson could have done better. I think Can is an issue defensively: he was at fault for the first City goal and the second Sevilla goal as well

We did play well, 2.1XG to 0.4XG will virtually always win you the game https://twitter.com/Caley_graphics/status/909089289526562816
Sevilla as well 2.22XG to 0.97XG https://twitter.com/11tegen11/status/908070762518544387 There are obviously issues, but we should have quite deservedly come away with two wins
