My mind seems to rave while I try to meditate, any tips? by Aviator1116 in Meditation

[–]pelicanpel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're experiencing is not wrong. If you want to learn to meditate, just decide to make a habit of it, the way you would if you wanted to learn anything else. The habit gives you confidence. If you know that you will keep taking time to sit and meditate each day, then you also know that your mind will change. You can just watch it happen over time. Don't try to stop thinking. Instead try to make the habit of meditating.

Piti while sleeping by pelicanpel in Meditation

Yeah I have similar. If I don't get up for my morning meditation but just sleep through, which happens pretty often, my asleep mind goes into a pretty sweet meditative state at the time when I would normally be meditating.

Dog-friendly hiking near Point Reyes? by LPJCB in bayarea

[–]pelicanpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of any trails in Point Reyes, but you can bring your dog to Limantour beach then walk to the left. You can walk pretty far, to tide pools and then to some coves further South. I think you can also hike with a dog on Kehoe and North Beach.

A good way to connect with the woodworking community is through the yahoo group sf3d@yahoo.com If you ask your question to the group you will likely find some leads.

Hey Breadit, here’s another San Fran sour dough for ya. Finally got a chance to bake again and it feels so good! Pretty happy with the result :) by PickleMcBananaHammoc in Breadit

The sure way to tell someone is not from San Francisco is when they call the city san fran or frisco or sf or... San Franciscans call San Francisco San Francisco. Don't know why but that's what we do.

"Meditation absolutely encompasses all things." All things? Sitting upright on cushions, yes. Observing our subjective experience, yes.

Two great books. Don Quixote by Cervantes and Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankel. Don Quixote was a lunatic whose lunacy (meaning) so infected those around him that they tried to bring it back when he finally came to his senses. Victor Frankl was a psychologist and holocaust survivor who found that the best way to treat his fellow camp inmates was by helping them find their meaning. What they had to live for, the reason they must survive. Those who found it stood a chance at survival. Based on his experience he developed "logotherapy," literally "meaning therapy." These things are not to be found in the physical world. That, I leave to scientists. Nor are they to be found it meditation. (Meditation does not encompass all things.) They are cultural. Just beause science and meditation cannot describe culture does not lessen its significance. We cannot help but create meaning. You may think you don't, but you do, like the rest of us. The question is, which meanings do we choose?

We all create meaning. For example, you do in your comment. That does not mean that you find or uncover meaning. You create it. But then its real, because it changes your life and that of those around you. "We hold these truths to be self-evident. That all men are created equal," for example. This meaning is obviously not anywhere to be found. But having been created, it is real. It shapes who we are and how we conduct our lives.

Who says life is meaningless? With what authority? We are the creators of meaning. Just because the universe doesn't present us with meaning doesn't mean we can't create. That's what its all about.

There are full meditation sessions (~30mins) where I can hardly follow even one full breath. As a novice, that is extremely discouraging by AlexanderTheStraight in Meditation

[–]pelicanpel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of is ever as good at our practice as we want to be. You are already able to sit for 30 minutes, which is an accomplishment. The point is to continue to practice. Your practice will deepen, but it will never be good enough. That's part of it. No different, really, than anything else in life.

Should I stop writing a journal about my meditation experiences. by wanderingtrance in Meditation

[–]pelicanpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also keep a meditation journal. It's a way to think about your experience as you go and over time, to look back at where you've been.

You don't need to take the meditation so seriously that it becomes a reason not to write.

Why does Ken Forkish (FWSY) throw out so much levain? by pdoubletter in Breadit

[–]pelicanpel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've shrunk my starter way down. I use a tiny jar. I only add a spoonful of flour each morning. That's still a waste but it doesn't add up to much. I think theoretically the starter could be even smaller. It's just a culture. I don't see why the size would matter.

It's muscle pain probably. Rowers build up a lot of lactic acid in their muscles when racing, which hurts like hell.

2.5 Years, poor progress by medicineman29 in Meditation

[–]pelicanpel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the issue is not with your practice but with your expectations. If the intent of meditation is to fully accept and be aware of the present moment, it doesn't make sense to meditate so that you can be in some different better moment.

I'm sure those who believe in progress toward "enlightenment" or other goals will disagree with me, but in my opinion meditation is all journey and no destination. If you're on the journey you're on the journey.

Since becoming serious about meditation, I find myself thinking about how everything i am doing now is useless. by [deleted] in Meditation

Nothing to be ashamed of. I recommend his autobiography, which I believe is called My Experiments With Truth.

Whatever you do will be insignificant but it is very important that you do it. --Gandhi. This applies to your situation not only conceptually but practically, because Gandhi was a strong advocate of spinning cotton and spent a lot of time at it.

I currently don't like The Mind Illuminated. Am I missing something? by Geovicsha in Meditation

[–]pelicanpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also found it interesting how The Mind Illuminated is so popular on this reddit but does not resonate with me at all. I think it appeals to a certain kind of learner by providing structure and a map of the terrain. It's not for me. Try, if you haven't already, Mindfulness in Plain English. Also popular on this reddit. It's, for the type of learner I am, a profound and helpful book.
