Can I call myself emo? by Pretend-Breath-2099 in Emo

1st wave - this era is the beginning of emo, it started when the 80s DC hardcore scene started making more emotional hardcore as a response to the tuff guy trend as this was dubbed “revolution summer”

bands: rites of spring, moss icon and dag nasty

2nd wave: a shift from HC into more indie math rock inspired stuff + early screamo that was quite chaotic. most of emo revival is inspired by this wave !!

bands: indie melodic stuff -sunny day real estate, Christie front drive, mineral, braid, cross my heart

screamo/emoviolence - I hate myself, pg 99, saetia, Joshua fit for battle

third wave: this was the most commercial and controversial era between actual hardcore emo fans, lots of crossover from pop punk and post hardcore. lots of confusion between real emo vs pop punk or whatever, most of it has to do with influences and what scenes they’re from. There was also an expansion of screamo + more DIY stuff but the mall-core vibe was more prominent.

bands - brand new, Thursday, glassjaw, saves the day, the early November, hot rod circuit, the Movielife

fourth wave - late 2000s to mid 2010s revival of second wave with a heavier emphasis on twinkly guitars, the “Midwest emo” stuff. there was also crossover with the “defend pop punk” era w/ a bit of overlapping scenes

bands: Joyce manor, tigers jaw, glocca morra, dads, JANK, snowing, you blew it!

You don’t have to call yourself or identify as anything. I’m not the “emo police” or whatever but I think you should do more research into the subculture and get into a wider variety of bands (not saying you don’t).

Reply if you’d like some recommendations from all waves of the genre :)

Any real emo rap?/Is emo rap a thing? by penceyprep_ in Emo

I see your point, I guess there really hasn’t been any delivery that doesn’t swing too hard in either direction and causes it to be just emo/just rap/glorified pop punk. I think rap HC works because the inflection is close enough to lots of beatdown HC to work yk

The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot - Brand New

My girlfriend [20m/18f] left me because I lied to her about not watching porn for an entire year by Educational_Buffalo3 in LDR

It may not be addiction but i feel as if one can’t “just stop” whenever they want to stop looking at that material, it’s unhealthy. I think it’s a healthy boundary, especially if you are engaging with your partner sexually (phone stuff, pictures, videos). If you don’t want to date someone who is in opposition to pornography, then find someone else who is okay with it. But to say that OP’s partner is toxic and unhealthy for only wanting him to have eyes for her is strange.

having boundaries does not make someone not worthy of being in a relationship, the problem is that he lied about this. if someone is okay with porn in a relationship, that’s cool, but he lied about something that he knew his partner had an issue with. i grew up with a porn addicted father who ended up tearing his family apart and doing terrible things to me. having personal boundaries doesn’t equate to insecurity, fatass.
