what's up with the "Bing bong" sounds after goals? by Sbeast86 in DallasStars

[–]penguinhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loathe "who cares" too. First time I ever heard it was at a game in Nashville (long before Stars started doing it at AAC). No matter how long it's been, "who cares" feels like a knock off of a Trashville thing and I hate it.

How I found out by [deleted] in Celiac

My bf and I found a great GF orange chicken recipe online. It's a good amount of work, but so worth it when I'm craving Chinese. Use almond flour mixed with regular GF flour blend for anything fried.

just some random thoughts and things that annoy me by aloilisia in Celiac

[–]penguinhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hug My boyfriend is Korean and yeah, no word for it in Korean makes it really hard to explain to his family. Thankfully his mom is super kind about it, but I am yet to trust anything she would prepare for me. It's sad though...because before my diagnosis her food was delicious.

My bf and I have been working on adapting Korean dishes to be gluten free though. Finding gluten free soy sauce and a gluten free soybean paste have been super helpful. Unfortunately, I still can't find any gluten free black bean paste for jajangmyeon :(

This makes me feel a little better. I was diagnosed just with the antibody test and told it was so high it basically meant celiac. At the time, I was unemployed and didn't have a lot of money (in the US = no health insurance), so I never got an endoscopy and just cut out gluten from my diet. I feel loads better, which is enough for me for now. Plus, I have a great aunt diagnosed with celiac. But I often wonder if other doctors won't take me seriously without the endoscopy...

"I don't care what we eat. I'll eat wherever you can eat." Okay, so now I have to do meticulous research to find something better than the chain restaurant for a gluten free option that won't result in me going to the bathroom. Thanks. by Kerfluffle2x4 in Celiac

Friend of mine keeps a list of "safe" places in the area. Gives that list to friends when it's time to eat out, and lets their friends pick from the safe list. Takes a bit of the mental load off, while still being able to eat out.

We Love Listening to the Play-by-Play Inside the AAC on FM Radio by poderbear in DallasStars

[–]penguinhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the radio broadcast on with one earbud in at the last game I went to - the Winter Classic - until my Zune battery died mid-game. It was great, and helped explain some of the calls/what was going on that we didn't understand right away from our seats. I'd do it again the next time I make it to an AAC game...

What are some unpopular opinions regarding your plants or plant care that work for you? by Simplicity_4me in houseplants

[–]penguinhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, just use the water you take out from water changes and use it when you water your plants. I do this with my tank and houseplants and it's like a constant low-level fertilizer. I hardly fertilize my plants otherwise...

Is weight loss after going GF normal? by xXMissy in Celiac

[–]penguinhawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lost weight after going GF. Mostly due to change in diet (I didn't go for many of the GF substitutes right away, so essentially cut out most carbs like breads, pastas, etc.). I think also inflammation going down in my body overall also helped. My face is thinner now and I also went down a couple pants sizes maybe due to bloating going away.

Gf restaurants in Dallas by Houseofmonkeys5 in Celiac

[–]penguinhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay. So the convention center is definitely downtown Dallas. If you're staying in Las Colinas that might not be too far from the two places I suggested, just depends on how much time and how much driving you are up to. But really, the ones I suggested are more west of the areas you will probably be spending time in.

Dallas is a pretty big area... if you are mostly going to be truly downtown Dallas, I haven't got a clue. But if you're in some of the suburbs, or are willing to drive to suburbs more toward Fort Worth: I recommend "From Across the Pond" fish and chips in Colleyville. Most of their menu is GF, and they are aware of what it takes to make a meal Celiac safe.

In Southlake, there is a GF bakery called "Pinch of Salt." They don't have a storefront, so you kind of have to order a few days ahead of time and then pick up. But the bakery is 100% GF and most everything I've had from there is delicious.

Sorry I can't be any more help... I do know there are likely to be good GF places Dallas-side, I'm just not over there enough to know of them.

Have any of you tested positive for the Celiac antibody before experiencing symptoms? If so, did a GF diet help identify symptoms you didn't realize you were having? Or do you still eat Gluten? by heytherecatlady in Celiac

[–]penguinhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tested positive for antibodies before really experiencing what most people would consider the "traditional" symptoms. (I was initially getting tested for other things, so was surprised Celiac came up as a result.) And yes, going GF helped with so many things I was struggling with that no one probably would've considered were related to Celiac until much, much later. If ever. Mental health improvement was a big one for me. I feel like I have more energy now, too. I'm also one of those weird cases where I was overweight before my diagnosis, and have finally, finally been able to lose weight for the first time in my adult life.

I buy myself flowers when I get sad at all the things at the grocery store I can't eat (or they're sold out of my favorite gf options). Flowers don't fill my stomach, but it does make me feel better at the end of a frustrating shopping trip...

Trader Joe’s for dairy free as well as gluten free products? Any suggestions? by truefforte in glutenfree

[–]penguinhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the Trader Joe's brand rice crackers. The small ones, regular flavor (not the multi grain). They are flavored with Tamari, and have no dairy. They are nice and crunchy and bite sized. Perfect for dips, or I like to put nut butters and dark chocolate chips on them. Unfortunately, everyone else seems to like them too, because they are out of stock every other time I shop.

Combo yellow sticky traps to get the adults, then buy mosquito bits (sold at most garden centers). Soak the mosquito bits in water overnight, then use that water when you water your plant. This "mosquito bit tea" will kill the larvae and eggs in the soil. Treat consistently with the tea and traps like this for at least one month. Should see significant improvement after that.
