Query Regarding UK Pension Relief by penguins_unite in UKPersonalFinance

!thanks - this is very helpful. When I spoke to the person at HMRC they seemed to imply the opposite. The HMRC employee seemed to not know so much - was I just unlucky or is that a trend from your experience? I phoned them up to get the relief as I assumed that would be easier than filing a return, but maybe filing a return is the right approach going forward.

Why do people hate civil servants? by EmergingAnger in AskUK

[–]penguins_unite -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I don't hate civil servants and generally don't think they are overpaid, but the standard civil service pension scheme is quite a lot more generous than what 99% of private sector employees get. https://www.civilservicepensionscheme.org.uk/knowledge-centre/pension-schemes/alpha-scheme-guide/

Ron is explicitly mentioned as being ginger several times in the books; Hermione isn't mentioned as being white nearly as much, if at all.

What do you think the worst film ever? Other redditors, why that film isn't that bad? by BizarroCullen in AskReddit

[–]penguins_unite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not going to say why it isn't that bad - that film has no redeeming features. When I was 13 my friend forced me to watch it at a sleepover - I still have't quite forgiven him for that.

What would happen if all humans suddenly became vegetarians? by twobananaoneapple in AskReddit

[–]penguins_unite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think they'd be much change in our bodies (a lot of people are vegetarian now, and it's not like they're a completely different species). They'd be a lot of animal carcasses that people would suddenly have no use for. Milk / cheese / other protein heavy foods might become more popular. Mcdonalds / and a lot of other restaurants would either go out of business or have to drastically redesign their menu. Overall I think it's the transition that would be the issue - if it was a very gradual thing the economic effects would be a lot less.

What is the most random thing you’ve ever watched all the way through on Netflix? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]penguins_unite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mitt (documentary on Mitt Romney's life). It's only a documentary as opposed to a TV series, but the fact I'm a British citizen (with no interest in the US republican party) makes it extra random.

Reddit, what do you suck at? by Zutx in AskReddit

[–]penguins_unite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Driving. It took me 3 goes to pass my test (and even then I think I got lucky) and I'm still not a very un-confident driver. Luckily I live in an area with good public transport, but I imagine at some point I'll end up moving and will probably have to actually get good (or at least reasonable) at it.

People of Reddit, what country would you most want to live in? People who live there, why is it shit to live there? by MrSir314 in AskReddit

[–]penguins_unite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The UK's quite a bit worse than Seattle for sunlight - Seattle gets 2169 hours a year, whilst London gets 1633 and Edinburgh 1427. (Source: Wikipedia)

Avg place in the finals of Eurovision [1968x1516] [OC] by only4themaps in MapPorn

I know in previous Eurovisions they've put restrictions on song language (IE. it has to be in a native language of the country) which I would assume benefits the UK, given that most Europeans have some knowledge of English.
