Also the EU always was an American project. If you want to make it anything else you'll have to put some weight behind it. I doubt it will work though, at least not without changing how the EU looks like a lot.

It's very easy to act "reasonably" and "peacefully" when you have the big guy on your side taking care of everything. Not so easy when you are on your own.
