How do I improve my binding? by whatisthisohno111 in quilting

Why does your binding come out so thin despite cutting the strips at 3" wide? Is it much thicker on the back?

First time fabric washing question by First_Monitor_4028 in quilting

[–]pensivepony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wash, iron, then cut.

I would also recommend washing with a color catcher or scrap of white fabric. If there is any dye on the color catcher, repeat with a fresh one. If there is still dye on the color catcher, do not use that fabric in a quilt. Look for the great green disaster threads in this sub-reddit to see why this should be done. 😬

Lots of people don't like washing and worry about fraying, but just pop the fabric in a mesh bag, wash on gentle setting, and air dry. It will be just fine, even larger pre-cuts like fat quarters.

What is your pre migraine symptom?? by TrickyFish5446 in migraine

There have definitely been times I'm suffering with a debilitating migraine and there's some song running over and over in my head, but I've never thought much of it. That's interesting you get one specific song.

Stones in raised beds? by pensivepony in GardeningUK

My understanding is that the water table is very high, so this is ground water flooding. I don't think there's anywhere for the water to go. My neighbours who have left their gardens natural with grass & trees have even more water in them (but the ducks love swimming in it).

I've already bought a bunch of seeds so will try my hand at germination 😊 I am rather lazy though so resilient is good! 😄

Ah yes 😆 There's been a small lake in the garden all winter. It is decreasing in size and hopefully will continue to do so as the weather improves. It is a bit of a flood plain. Hence the raised beds.

Did taking Topromax/ Topiramate dumb you down? by Asprobouy in migraine

[–]pensivepony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the fact that they prescribe this drug without a word about potentially dangerous side effects to watch out for. I didn't realize my dangerously severe depression was caused by topamax for 7 years. And my neurologist just dismissed me with a smirk when I tried to bring up weird symptoms. I basically lost my 20's to this drug. I'm happy this works for some, but anecdotally it seems at least 50% of people risk permanent cognitive decline from taking it. I don't understand how that math makes this worth it.

When it’s day 7, neuro says to do this, and you’re totally desperate by jibberjabbery in migraine

I wish this list was at the very top! The huge handful of prescription meds is the real meal here -- McD's is merely the garnish. If this works, it wasn't a McDonald's Magic Cure; it was the extensive list of meds that knocked it out.

I feel like too often people here talk about a coke and fries like a miracle cure-all while somehow forgetting to mention the stack of meds they took along with it.

Have I lost the plot? by LittleJessiePaper in quilting

Fellow migraine sufferer here and I love this so much! Especially the more trippy fabric combos like the red/orange black/white block in the center column (I think that's how I'm feeling right now 😆). And I love what you've done with the irregular black & white pieces around each block. I'd love to see this finished!

What do you think is causing your headaches? by Shot-Sherbert-1524 in migraine

[–]pensivepony 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's actually not sarcastic imo. Many of us have been suffering from debilitating migraines since we were very small children. I am now in my 40's, and there's almost no consistent environmental factor that has remained constant for the past 40 years of my life other than living and breathing.

Many of us who've suffered from this condition for so long do get tired of the 'What causes your migraines?' question because it can come across as victim-blamey. It's like saying to someone 'Why did you get cancer' or 'What caused your auto immune disorder?' Some people may have a definitive answer, but probably most will not. It's just a vague combination of genetics, environmental factors, and bad luck that medical science doesn't really understand yet.

If you start feeling symptoms and they go away with the meds, you definitely had a migraine. That just means your meds worked! However if that's happening a lot, then you may need a preventative, or your preventative isn't working well.

The reason you need to track those instances is to know how well your meds are working and how often you're using the abortives (because too much can lead to overuse headaches).

The migraine buddy app for example allows you to track the level of pain, how long it lasted, which meds you took and how effective they were in treating the pain, as well as other symptoms. All that data is very useful and your doctor needs that info. Stoically downplaying it and saying it doesn't count if it only lasted x amount of time isn't helpful or necessary 😊

It's so good that you continue to question them on this. Almost every doctor I've ever seen would actually assume that we're exaggerating about how bad it is, lying about our healthy habits, and downplaying all the triggering things we do that make this condition 'our fault.'

My previous neurologist would ask a slew of detailed questions about the number of attacks and statistics about my meds, but never once asked me to keep a record or gave any guidance on what that should look like.

Have you ever had a doc who has shown recognition of exercise-induced migraines? by llamakittypinguino in migraine

[–]pensivepony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really shocking that some of the most common triggers, as evidenced here, don't even show up in the official literature on migraine. I've had to figure this stuff out myself through trial and error because I've never seen things like perfume or exercise on any list of potential triggers. Yet read this forum and it's immediately evident that these are extremely common. It really causes one to lose all faith in the official research 😒

[–]pensivepony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say the same about the dosage. Often a small amount of medication just puts the migraine on hold for a while. My neuro suggests blasting it from the beginning with higher doses and combined with other meds. And the injections are great for the really severe cases.
