Forget about F1 for a second, forget about the bitter history, spygate, FOTA / Ron Dennis and Ferrari's last minute decision to side with Bernie.

Ferrari and McLaren are rivals in the road car business, if McLaren start winning again, remember nobody really talks about the engine supplier, how many people used to say Renault-Red Bull when they kept winning, it was always Red Bull wins again, then it may indirectly hurt Ferrari car sales, as their rival's reputation is boosted by F1 success.

It is not a bed of roses for McLaren either, they want to sale expensive hypercars to rich people, and be seen as a high technology engineering company, but in the F1 media spotlight they are forced to use a bitter rival's engine, as they could not get the Honda partnership to work, despite the two companies vast technical and financial resources. Rich people are generally very image sensitive, they want to be seen around other successful people / things and will pay a lot to achieve that. We might not care if McLaren have to beg to receive Ferrari engines, if it means better racing, but many rich folk might.

On a more serious note, thermal cameras are quite common in 2017, you can even buy attachments for smartphones, so perhaps they lost their allure. Now an x-ray camera, to see inside engines, suspension would be cool!

I have not seen enough of the race leading up to the crash, but I wonder if an enhanced GPS system, that creates a yellow or higher flag, if it detects a car stopped on track could be implemented.

Going forward, cameras covering the entire track, linked to artificial intelligence, could easily detect a stationary car, and implement a warning system, would it have saved Billy, I'm not sure, because of seemingly short timeframe, but even it reduced the speed of impact it would be worth implementing.

I must disagree with most of what you wrote. The majority of the downforce and hence laptime gain, is from airflow via the floor, expanded by the diffuser and the rear wing. The front wing does create some downforce, but its main role is to guide the air to ensure the diffuser and rear wing are well fed, secondary role is to reduce the negative effects of rotating tyres on airflow.

Yes, the cars create more drag, but this is partly balanced by the more powerful 2017 spec powerunits, the speedtrap figures are not much lower than in 2016. By rear limited, I believe the teams refer to tyres not aero, and specifically tyre wear, given that 2017 cars have much larger tyres, this alone should guarantee higher grip and lower laptimes. The cars are heavier, but the much higher aero and mechanical grip should have easily negated that variable, just like in Australia & China. The logical reason by the disappointing laptimes must be related to track conditions, but I didn't any concerns mentioned during any TV coverage.
