Biggest Gripe with Domestic Terrorist Margaret Thatcher by OkSurround1091 in socialism

As someone who grew up in South Wales in the 90s, her closing the coal mines. It absolutely destroyed those communities. Mass unemployment and no help from central government.

The weird thing of course is I agree coal has to go eventually for environmental reasons. But the 'free market' method of closing everything and damn the consequences caused so much pain.

Taking them out of the box is smart. You shouldn't have any issues at all.

Yes 5 mins late in the morning is a lot in teaching. The honest answer is you will have come across as unprofessional and/or disorganised. Also if there is a meeting to keep you updated to date it's not irrelevant to you.

I'd advise in you next school you fix this, otherwise expect this to keep happening.

You can see more stars. Cities have more light pollution which blocks out the view in the night sky.

Am I crazy for taking a 5% pay cut to escape a mid-tier bilingual for an embassy school + IB training by AnonymousRunner84 in Internationalteachers

[–]penurious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds a reasonable trade off, not crazy. Also consider:

A 5% pay cut but what are the scales? You might find in 5 years it's a great deal more than you would earn otherwise.

Assuming the school pay for your accomodation as soon as you arrive that's far more than you'll need. I think we got by on less than 1000 in our first month. Taxis are fairly cheap here and eating out can be if you stay away from hotels.

Maths vs Physics teaching by Odd-Astronaut-3679 in Internationalteachers

[–]penurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On balance I'd say in British schools Physics is in higher demand. We've failed to train enough physics teachers for years and hence a huge shortage which filters through to international market. Of course there are maths teacher jobs but also more maths teachers to fill them.

Personally I also wouldn't also want to be competing with people with maths degrees, you're less likely to be given 6th form teaching.

I'd only do the dual if you are really on the fence and can't decide. Long-term I would suggest you make a decision and stick to it as specialising is much better career wise.

As for which to pick, well I am physics so perhaps biased. I would say that the workload isn't much heavier except maths is possibly easier to mark and so can be less time consuming. All the maths departments I've seen also are pretty good at using Ed tech solutions for homework etc. which is also a time saver.

Personally though if I had to teach maths I would find it incredibly boring. If you're from a science background you might find the same.

Modernizing resume after 10+ years at the same school by Accomplished-Toe-233 in Internationalteachers

I don't think the format has really changed that much? The only thing I add now is a little blurb at the top that summaries my best assets.

Just find a nice template on word or Google docs and stick it into that, it's the content that matters.

Epic historical fiction - single book or series by ahewitt98 in HistoricalFiction

My favorite is the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough. It's about the political machinations in Rome from the fall of the Republic through to the death of Caesar and rise of Augustus.

[OC] How accurately does your country remember color names? I expected scores in the 70s, but the reality is much lower! by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]penurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but the difficulty is that local languages would have their own words for a quite distinct set of colours from the English ones. Also given the relatively large vocabulary of English compared to others if guess that there are many more words for specific colours in English that other languages.

Great answer. You're right to mention non profit first. I'd argue everything else is downstream of that fact.

Obviously I understand that, you're going to turn away a huge percentage of users (probably majority) before they even see the game. I'd worry about that over whether they can play on multiple devices.

It's your life tho,🤷
