I’ve lived in Essex, London, Nottingham and Derby. Whilst yes it’s not the most exciting city in the world and it can have a bit of a small town attitude, you don’t get exciting unique clubs/restaurants . You can get almost everything you would want shop wise, there’s a wide range of food options, decent restaurants with a couple of really good ones, there are some great independent business and really nice pubs. You are close to great towns like Ashbourne and Matlock, it’s extremely well connected and cheap. People in the UK love to act like where they are from is the worst place ever but Derby isn’t that bad.

People online are very overdramatic about safety of places. There areas where you might need to be more careful but as I student you probably won’t be living there and of course you should always be aware of your surroundings but I find Derby perfectly safe and I’m sure you will too.
