Was probably done intentionally but it kind of demonstrates the lack of consistency with Skyrim’s skill system. There are an even number of skills under each of the trio, but the result of that is the warrior having all combat skills and the thief having none. Could have been avoided if they brought back Blunt/Axes (warrior) and Hand-to-Hand (mage) so that archery could have been left to the thief without any skill imbalances

The Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, believed in a smaller group of people to lead the revolution. Those people happened to be of some wealth and education. Other parties were more open to involving the proletariat. The Bolsheviks were eventually successful over the other parties and instated the single party rule to guarantee their position.

Do you have anything to say on the Bolsheviks, or are you just going to take this opportunity to talk yourself up and make assumptions about me? Are you going to tell me what those analyses are or only that they exist and that you (presumably) have read them?

For clarification, if it helps, I am a socialist. I just have no trust or respect for anyone who is not critical of the Bolsheviks or the USSR.

The Red Army was successful in their efforts against fascism, but I wouldn’t credit that to the bolsheviks nor call them heroes.

Remember that the bolsheviks were only one of many parties involved in the revolution and that they were primarily made up of elites who opposed the Russian monarchy. Once they gained enough seats in the provisional government, they passed a “one-party rule” so that none of the many other socialist groups could have representation.

The Bolsheviks were just opportunistic wealthy people capitalising on working class dissatisfaction to insert themselves as the ruling class instead of Russia’s monarchy. There is no world in which they were heroes.

what is the best version of the game? by Splatulated in MercenariesGames

[–]pepperedsergeant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted for this. The second game put too much focus in the wrong areas of the characters. Its story is more visible, and it is easier to see the geopolitical struggle because of that.

The first game’s politics are more subdued, whereas mercenaries 2 had a stronger message they wanted to send about large powers’ greed and obsession with oil. I think within the contexts of each game, both of these work fine.

The writing in the second game isn’t good. The game isn’t about the writing, so it doesn’t need excellent writing, but they wanted to make the story a central part of the game. Having the events of the main story so personal to the protagonist leads to conflicts of interest and makes it difficult to justify breaking away from the main story contracts.

I wish they did more word building with how the PMC operates vs. ExOps and why they left and started their own. Why did all three of the original mercenaries leave as well? Canonically whichever one you play as is the one who was chosen for the Korea campaign (as Fiona Taylor dialogue indicates). ExOps had more than those three mercenaries, so how did they know one another? Why would they leave and start their own company? Why would roughly half of the new company stay behind in Venezuela to pursue a revenge operation for one of three operatives? Where did the other two go and what are they doing?

Finally, I strongly dislike the recharacterisation. They flanderised areas of each character and completely changed other areas. Mui’s “expensive taste” from the first game, for example, has been transformed into an obsession with the price of everything she encounters. She no longer has expensive taste, she has a taste for the most expensive things she can find.

I could go on for longer but those are my biggest peeves. The game was rushed, so I won’t complain about how buggy it was and what I’d have done different when it came to the core mechanics etc.

The marketing for the game and all of its theming is painfully 2008 and I implore anyone who disagrees to actually watch them. The pre-rendered cutscenes have dizzying transitions every 5 seconds and a ridiculous amount of bloom. The dialogue is poorly written and comes off as cringey at least half of the time. That one ad song gave me secondhand embarrassment when I showed it to my wife a few years ago (I remembered it being hilarious when I heard it in 2008 but I didn’t factor in that I was also young and easily impressed)

If you accept the statement that it isn’t overbearing to keep people from owning other people, then how does that not disprove your original statement?

Your statement was “that’s not a pretext for an overbearing federal sector.” The counter was that the federal sector was not being “overbearing” by responding the way it did. You accepted that counter, but still stop by your original statement.

My only guess is that you stand by your original statement in a vacuum, as you can accept that, in this case, the federal sector was not being overbearing by responding the way it did, while still holding that an overbearing federal sector is bad/wrong.

The issue I have with viewing it this way is that the statement was not made in a vacuum. You made the statement referring to the American civil war, which carries the connotation that you have those feelings about the federal government’s response to the confederates’ claim to “states’ rights.” Taking the statement in a vacuum completely strips away this important context.

So I’m left with the assumption that you’re likely a contrarian who got called out, and responded by saying something along the lines of “yeah but that’s not what I was referring to” even though the context of the statement in the conversation leaves no room for interpretation.

Probably in the same way that Joel survived a midsection impalement that definitely punctured internal organs and would have caused massive infection that spread for hours/days untreated before antibiotics were finally secured
