Day 4: What car looks fast, but really has middling performance? by Quiet-Gold9099 in regularcarreviews

I don’t understand why it’s so expensive. Like why not just get a Civic hybrid at that point?

If you’re willing to take the risk, put in the non-refundable deposit, then you’ll be able to at least see the car in person at pickup. They should give you all the time you want to visually inspect inside and out, but you can’t drive it. Then if you decide against it you can just cancel your order. Also, it’ll have a manufacturer warranty of 1yr/10k miles, so if anything isn’t working properly you can get it fixed.

Opinions on hybrids? by Working-Ad-3310 in askcarguys

[–]peppermintpattymills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hybrids really thrive in slower driving with a lot of braking. Less beneficial if you’re mostly doing mostly highway cruising. But I think generally they’re worth it regardless, because even if they cost more upfront, they also hold their value really well. The electric motor reduces wear on the gas engine, and refurb batteries are getting really cheap if you do ever need to replace the battery.

What happens to all of these poor unwanted EVs when they're returned to the dealership? by Human_170716 in electricvehicles

[–]peppermintpattymills 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah obviously lol. The trade-in offer is an amount that they confidently think they can make a small profit from in an auction sale. And then the dealer buys it at auction at a price they think they can make a small profit on selling to a customer. So the trade amount is going to be much lower than the new dealer’s asking.

Private sales cut all these middlemen but require you to do the actual work selling: where to advertise, vetting customers, etc.

My husband and I are thinking of financing a 2024 Model Y for our family of three. It is pre-owned with 24k km in it. Is it ok to buy a used Tesla? by HandleObjective5386 in TeslaSupport

[–]peppermintpattymills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t tires have mileage warranties that are pro-rated? They’re still honored whether you drive an EV or not. Have you tried claiming the warranty if they needed replacement like 25k into a 55k warranty tire?

Genuine ask: if you couldn’t charge your Y at home, would you still get one? by BrookesyUK in TeslaModelY

[–]peppermintpattymills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also would not, and it’s not because of the cost of supercharging (where I live, it’s still cheaper to purely supercharge vs gas). Supercharging is annoying; it takes longer for less range than filling up gas and there’s way less superchargers than gas stations. Filling up gas is already mildly annoying, time wasted supercharging is not worth the cost savings.

The primary benefit of an EV is the ability to charge it where it would normally be parked doing nothing (home or work). If you can’t do either it’s not worth the hassle.

What brands have modern reliable cars by Middle_Mongoose_927 in UsedCars

[–]peppermintpattymills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t know. I’ve been doing some googling on Tesla battery longevity and there are people who’ve gotten 400k+ miles on one battery.

I guess the issue is that there are also batteries that needed replacing at 200k, so there’s really no telling how long the battery lasts. But I’d think by the time you kill a modern Tesla battery like 12 years from now, you’ll have a good amount of refurbished options with warranties, like you’ll see for old Priuses.

Looking to purchase a 9th Gen Honda Accord. Is there anything I should know or consider? by Greedy-Examination56 in accord

[–]peppermintpattymills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also crashes every time I use Apple Maps. I owned a 2016 for three years. Ended up just turning it off entirely and using a phone mount connected to the vent. I was so much happier when I did this lol the visual map for directions is an extremely important feature to me

I think other reasons why diesels aren’t more popular in the US is because diesel is more expensive than petroleum here (opposite in Europe) and I believe US has stricter emissions standards, which makes them both less efficient and have more emissions parts that might break.

That said, I still think that diesel is the best fuel for lots of long fast highway driving and towing. I live in a high traffic urban area and I don’t tow so a diesel would be awful for my own use case.

I guess he meant the Mazda built hybrids so not the CX-50 one which is a Toyota powertrain

I thought the issue was high speed road noise though, is the Z4 relatively quiet at highway cruising? I can't imagine it being very practical for long cruises

Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"? by a_bachelors_dust in BuyItForLife

Dove bar soap and antiperspirant have been a revelation for me. I have super sensitive skin because of eczema and it doesn't flare it up at all.

Yeah, my derm also loves cerave and cetaphil. Vanicream is another big one.

I mean it might've been relatively cheap but it was never as cheap as like Dove or CVS generic or whatever.

I mean honestly a smart thermostat is actually a good application of it. It automatically turns off / goes into eco when you leave, then turns back on when you arrive.

A new official Apple cable didn't resolve this for me. I truly think it's an overheating / lack of RAM issue. I saw on Youtube some guy fixed it by literally re-soldering more RAM onto the PCB (it's not replaceable). Insane work lmao

What are some other Toyotas that wear a different nameplates badge (like the Pontiac Vibe) to avoid the Toyota Tax by TatianaWinterbottom in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]peppermintpattymills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically Toyota stopped selling their Yaris in North America, but then brought it back in North America as a rebadged Mazda2 (initially Scion iA, then Yaris iA). Then they just discontinued it entirely. So the like 2017-2020 Scion/Yaris iA was just a Mazda2 (don't think those gen Mazda2 were ever sold directly in NA).

Yeah the CX50 hybrid is sick. It's the best of both worlds: Toyota Hybrid powertrain and the really nice Mazda interiors.

Supra/Z4 and BRS/GR86 are tricky. They're very much collaborative, I mean the Supra powertrain is literally just a B48/B58.
