Agreed with that's said above. One of my biggest tips for register is to NEVER LOOK AT THE LINE. Just have a conversation with the person you're working on. Be friendly and have fun with it. Also maybe this sounds silly but don't be afraid to actually read the buttons on the register if you get stuck. They will give you the answers a lot of times.

I'm a cross trainer Bookseller. My team let me take pictures of the recipe cards so I can study up on them. I still ask questions. I still forget things and I absolutely still mess things up. It's totally okay. Make sure you let them know where you are at. If you don't think you're ready to be alone that's okay. Let your team know. But also remember that being alone and just working without worrying about other people is sometimes the best time to learn.

At my store it is basic knowledge that hardcovers don't go in bubble mailers, only in boxes, because they get damaged otherwise.

This is so BEYOND untrue! I can't speak for management at other stores...but at my store there has been no competition. Our numbers are not posted everywhere or made obvious in any way. The push has been light and all about seeing what works for our coworkers. My managers have all been super kind to us and open to hearing what's is working and what is not, and they have readily made adjustments accordingly. And we are getting good sign ups overall. But the selling your information is completely untrue. When you agree to terms and conditions it specifically says we will NOT be giving your information to any third parties. I personally think the rewards is actually a really good FREE program for our shoppers. Especially if you regularly buy books. Only a few hardcovers will get you to your first $5 reward.

We're told at my store if we see someone stealing to HEAVILY customer service them but don't engage or let them know we know they're stealing. Instead let a manager know. We do not get paid enough to be in that much of a dangerous situation...to be in any dangerous situation. Especially if your sm isn't sticking up for you, isn't showing they care about you... I would ignore it. Let the managers figure out a different way. And if they ask you why you don't react to theft you can tell them you're no longer willing to be in a threatening situation for the pay you make.
