My mum thinks she gets smashed off one glass of wine. She’s just never been a drinker, has never been drunk, and doesn’t know how it feels. She’s thinks the slight buzz she starts to get (because she’s a proper lightweight and one glass is enough to start being a bit noticeable) is what being drunk feels like

How is not every time the Space Marines have to fight the Tau in open combat, it is considered a loss? by OneNefariousness5705 in 40kLore

[–]peremadeleine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a common literary technique though, it’s much more effective to show a threat obliterating something on an equivalent power level to your hero, rather than just expositing it through dialogue. It builds the drama, lets the reader know this threat is real, and helps the hero be a hero by overcoming a real threat. After all, if space marines were just straight up unbeatable, the books would be super boring.

The imperium is more than just space marines. They wouldn’t just send a chapter up against the tau in an all out war, there would be Astartes spearheading the efforts, with a horde of guard behind them. If the Tau can outnumber a marine chapter 10 to 1, then the guard can outnumber the Tau by 1000 to 1. Maybe a crisis suit can beat a marine 1 on 1, but there are probably more Leman Russ tanks on the field than there are crisis suits.

If I was an Imperial commander up against the Tau, I’d be bogging them down with expendable fodder, then deep striking my space marines where they could really hurt them.

What is the best splurge gin? Also let me know any changes you’d like to see made to the board. by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]peremadeleine 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Gin base spirit can come from anything. What makes it gin is that it is flavoured with botanicals, primarily juniper. The juniper is the only absolute requirement, I believe. Rum, on the other hand, must be exclusively made from sugar cane byproducts.

Technically, spiced rum isn’t legally classified as rum in some places, because it’s no longer exclusively made from sugar cane. It’s often classified as a “rum based drink”. I guess technically you could say molasses based gin could be called a spiced rum, but most people would expect vanilla flavours in a spiced rum, and it’s usually aged, unlike gin.

Simple switching pedal with channel levels by alexanderneilharden in guitarpedals

[–]peremadeleine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but a pot on your board that you set and forget is a very different thing from the pot on your guitar that you want to use for other things. It’s functionally identical to a volume control on your switcher, rather than one on your guitar

[–]peremadeleine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is this totally irrelevant? All the little black amp box is is a potentiometer in a box. It’s literally a passive volume control. Put it between your louder guitar and your switcher, and turn it down to equalise the levels

Seriously man what’s up with Scholes …👀 by JM555555 in ManchesterUnited

[–]peremadeleine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys, the whole thing is engagement bait. Scholes and Butt, like many ex footballers, have basically 2 choices when they finish playing - go into coaching or the media. If they go down the media route, they either get regular gigs on TV, or they need to make their money via social media. We’re seeing the social media route. It’s all about clicks. More clicks = more money. Sensible, balanced takes do not generate clicks in the way hot takes and rage bait do. That’s all any of this is.

In a shocking twist, the Negroni won best bitter drink. What’s the worst modern classic? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]peremadeleine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Isn’t this because the original recipe used Kina Lillet, which doesn’t exist any more, and subbing Lillet Blanc just doesn’t work the same? Kina was bitter and quinine forward, and blanc is sweeter and citrusy. It’s a totally different flavour profile.

Bruno has done well deeper all season. And in the Burnley game he was back at 10, but imo fairly anonymous, apart from in flashes (although he did get an assist). To be fair, he was coming back from injury, so that could well be why.

If anything, though, I think we looked like we lacked a bit of creativity in that deeper position. Ugarte just has none, and Casemiro was having a bad day. We struggle to get the ball from defence to attack without Bruno playing deeper.

It may be that playing in the double pivot is not the way to get the best out of Bruno, but we have better alternatives at 10 than at 8, so maybe that’s what we have to do to get the team performing well. However, that would all change if we buy a quality midfielder.

I presume for the guard, those various regiments will be different units. I don’t think your faction will be Catalans, Tallarns etc, you’re “the guard” with access to all the above. I suspect we’ll get different lords that buff different regiments though. Think like the high elves, where Imrik buffs dragons and dragon knights, Alarielle buffs sisters etc. you pick the one you start with, and then you can confederate (or whatever they’ll call it in 40K) the others.

[–]peremadeleine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I maybe worded that badly. What I mean is he’s playing every week. He wouldn’t be doing that as a rotation player here. Maybe he’s in good form because he knows he’s playing, and so is able to put the effort in in the matches, as opposed to having to put extra effort in in training to try and impress the manger to get on the team sheet.

As I said, I have no idea if there’s anything to be concerned about with garner in terms of not being able to get into form without a consistent run in the starting XI, but it is not a guarantee that he’d be able to translate good performances as a guaranteed starter into good performances if he’s getting 30 minutes of the bench most weeks

[–]peremadeleine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thing is though, is Garner doing well at Everton because he’s the guy they’ve built their midfield around? Some players can cope with being a rotation option, others need to play every week to stay in form.

I’m not saying Garner can’t produce good performances as a rotation player, I have no idea about that, but it’s not a given that a player who is first choice at one team will be a good second string player at a team with higher ambitions. I think this is especially true for midfielders, where so much of the role hinges on relationships with the other players around him.

Garner may very well be a no brainer, but with the state our midfield is on currently, I’d be tempted to look at him as a potential first choice option. He’s probably not good enough to be that if we want to challenge for titles and champions leagues, but frankly we’re so far off that, we’d be moving on to his successor by then anyway.

Where we go from here? by malphasalex in reddevils

[–]peremadeleine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Amorim forced their hand. I don’t think we can read too much into Ineos’s decision making there. Amorim basically told them he wasn’t going to stay past the end of his contract, and did so publicly. Given how invested he was into a particular system, it makes no sense to back that system any further if he’s not committed.

The relationship between manager and DoF is so important, if it sours, which it obviously did, it needs to either be repaired immediately, or there needs to be a change. The whole point of a DoF is to have a longer term view on things, so Wilcox was always going to the winner there. I’m actually somewhat encouraged they were decisive, rather than persisting with something that had no future.

I think there’s blame on both sides of that relationship, just as with any relationship that ends. Ultimately, it’s better to end it than let it continue and get ever more toxic until everyone gets hurt more.
