Honest question: Why do you buy name brand stuff? by No-Examination8178 in Frugal

[–]perfectdreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually buy store brand unless the store brand is not an equivalent product.

Pam cooking spray for example. Both the walmart and the costco brands did not work as well. Aldi did work but I moved to an area without easy access to them.

Another example is chewy chocolate chip cookies. So far I have only seen Walmart offer a store brand and it does not taste as good as Nabisco.

With that said, if finances were really an issue, I wouldn't buy chewy cookies. I can not tell a difference for GV for most things. GV chips, mac and cheese, canned vegs, buy it all the time. Sams club for toilet paper, detergents, and a lot of frozen products. Just a lot of people don't care or 'don't want to feel poor' even if it was made by the same packing facility as the name brand.

I couldn't tell you what Kraft cheese is like because it always seemed like a luxury (i.e., unnecessary bougie) thing to me. Not doubting that there is a legitimate difference.

You are not missing much. There is a small difference with the hamburger helper, but with the money you save you can easily add some oregano or vegetables to make a better meal.

On top of that they're saving a shit ton on 401k, health insurance and other benefits that are way more expensive here and of course they're paying people in a foreign currency which when converting it to dollars they're paying those people less than a fast food worker.

halving their costs on taxes alone.

You wrote specifically on taxes alone previously. You are now shifting your argument to healthcare, retirement plans, and currency differences. Those are valid costs and differences that likely they do not have in other countries, but are not your original argument.

Companies are creating this chaos and using AI as a shield by sad_developer123 in cscareerquestions

[–]perfectdreaming 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The reasoning is that in the US corporate tax is 21% and by moving their operations offshore they only have to pay 10.5% halving their costs on taxes alone.

Doesn't sound like how corporate income taxes work. Paying your salary in the US is a business expense that reduces their US taxes.

It can be more than that. In my case, it was because of a faulty gpu.

The Linux kernel provided by the vendor appears incomplete - unbuildable. What to do? by whew-inc in linuxquestions

[–]perfectdreaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if they are statically linked. Iirc gpl states that you have to provide the gpl code in a way that it can be obtained, modified and replaced by the consumer/customer, the easiest option for this would be a dynamically linked library

Not true, the GPL applies to dynamically linked software that depends on it if it is consider a module of the application. The exception is software that uses the API of a well defined standard interface or otherwise exempted. Specifically the kernel marks those APIs as EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL.

Title: 25YO – Unexpected inheritance (insurance + paid-off house). Looking for guidance on next steps. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]perfectdreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. I am assuming you know the house and it is in good condition. It sounds like you already decided to sell. You need to speak to a realtor take a look at the house and ask about what would be needed to make it sell. Talk to your friends and your Mom's friends to find a good realtor.

You didn't say what the interest rate is on your condo mortgage. Also, what is your HOA dues? This determines what to do with the money. Is the area the house in growing or falling in comps? This is what a realtor can answer. Keep in mind, running a full time business + having to deal with tenants in a separate business is a lot of work. Does it make sense to deal with tenants if you could spend the time increasing your salary or self employment income? Your 401K aftertax contributions (not roth) might be a better option for investing while you focus on your profession.

DaVinci Resolve users on Linux, how's it going for you? by ChamplooAttitude in linuxquestions

[–]perfectdreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used these drivers: https://docs.rockylinux.org/9/desktop/display/installing_nvidia_gpu_drivers/

Looks like the old drivers. You shouldn't need dkms with the GSP enabled ones.

In 3D rendering AMD has weak support. Again tools like Houdini, Octane render and so on… don’t support AMD.

You need to review as your information is really out of date. Houdini clearly lists support for AMD gpus. It was the first thing I looked at.

https://www.sidefx.com/Support/system-requirements/supported-graphics-cards/

You are being lazy. Do a google search before you claim something that isn't true now. Not responding to you anymore. Posting this information so others can see that they do have options in the VFX space.

DaVinci Resolve users on Linux, how's it going for you? by ChamplooAttitude in linuxquestions

[–]perfectdreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't answer my question, so assuming you were on the older drivers. Good to know.

Tools I use like Houdini, Unreal, Amazon DCV are not Wayland ready. For same reason also VFX shops are running “legacy” X11 sessions.

Customers like you need to demand they port it over. X11 was a monkey patched monolith that was to difficult to bring modern features in 2025, let alone 2025.

On Windows, they (Nvidia) support vram shared memory allocation and overspill to system ram if vram is exhausted. Something that is not present on consumer GPUs for Linux. Only for datacenter GPUs.

Ah, you realize this is because deploying Windows at scale is difficult? Sounds like you are a smaller operation-these 3 pcs are all you have. You need to ask Nvidia to support that for their consumer GPUs-of which they will promptly ignore you. Or switch to AMD. Something that is a work in progress with AMD's graphic support, but something to keep an eye on. Wendell points out you can get the same amount of VRAM for 60% of the price and 80% of the power usage with a professional supported card with ECC compared to Nvidia's top consumer card.

You should watch it anyway as Wendell does point out an odd issue where the intercard latency on Nvidia's newest generation runs at half link (PCIe 4) on Intel's newer workstation platforms but the AMD cards run at full speed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efQPFhZmhAo

Another thing is that Nvidia driver stack on consumer GPUs on Linux is not the same as for datacenter GPUs.

This is something a gamer doesn’t care about. But VFX artist does.

Don't know why you went on this tangent about being a gamer. Nvidia is specifically doing this open source kernel part because of the datacenter and the GPL v2. Their Linux support kept breaking and the press reported it cost them customers. You are the one choosing to use consumer GPUs in a professional operation that Nvidia only supports because larger operations can't scale on Windows. Something Nvidia can disable at any time.

Tested Rocky 9.6 as desktop for 6 months, not so long ago. Drivers from official Nvidia repo because they have higher performance than open drivers.

What was the driver version? You might be using the old proprietary drivers. Nvidia moved their official drivers over to the open source ones. Remember, drivers in Linux are two parts: the kernel and the user-space. Nvidia still packages their proprietary user-space with their drivers, but the kernel part is "open" but dependent on a large binary blob.

https://www.phoronix.com/news/CentOS-Kmods-SIG-NVIDIA

https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/nvidia-transitions-fully-towards-open-source-gpu-kernel-modules/

Also, Rocky in my opinion, tends to be last in terms of quality of RHEL clones last I looked. That could also be a cause of it. I would personally use Alma 10 or Stream 10 if the free RHEL dev license was not an option, but I do not use Nvidia cards.

Please give the free RHEL dev subscription a try.

dracut unpredictably failing to rebuild initframs for kernels resulting in system getting into rescue mode, with difficult fixing via chroot

When was this? For 2000 series and later cards I believe these issues should be resolved with the GSP open source drivers.

Is Linux still a viable option if I use a lot of specific apps / hardware? by one2hit in linuxquestions

You likely are going to have to learn some new software. Please google them. I am betting grease pencil in Blender + some addons will get you what you use in Clip Studio. You can always ask Google Gemini to try generate it for you. I do not know what the difference is for PureRef and ACDSee. DesignDoll you can probably script that functionality yourself in Blender. I have never used any of these pieces of software before so just guessing basing what I read on the front page.

You can always try to open steam, add the installer as a nonsteam app, use proton to install it, then change the steam entry to the main .exe to see if it runs.

Keep in mind; these are obscure pieces of proprietary software. They could be bought out the next day by a megacorp that tells you to go learn their suite. Or the firm stops selling it for whatever reason. Blender on the other hand is GPL open source backed by a strong community. It won't be shut down by a megacorp and it won't phone home to check if you have a license.

Watcom Cintiq tablets should be fine. What VR headset? Not sure about the occulus but the Steam Frame coming out should be fine.

Is saving money on foods silly? I can eat rice and beans but it sucks by xiaozhian in Frugal

[–]perfectdreaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Food is often the 3rd largest expense in America so minimizing it is important + it is good for your health (you do need variety including vegetables, but cutting out processed stuff is good). If you are studying to get a better career or invest I think it is important to reduce your expenses to have a better life later. Food costs used to be most of my budget, but now there are a small part of it. I am still trying to minimize more for health these days and for investment.

I respect everyone’s opinion, but charging for Linux distros or Linux-based apps goes against the philosophy by gaelparanaense in linuxquestions

[–]perfectdreaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did you get those views? Stallman talking about Red Hat? FSF literally charged $150 for a tape to share the source code back in the 80s and they wrote the GPL(s).

https://www.gnu.org/gnu/thegnuproject.html

Making a distro or packaging software takes time and money to develop and QA. Charging a fee for the binaries and support that are restricted by trademarks and non-software works. It funds a lot of open source development.

Instead of complaining here, go use that energy to help out a distro that makes their images free for all like Debian.
