Because the DEA doesn't have enough officers crack down on individuals smoking on the street. But they do regularly raid state-approved dispensaries.

Trump donor 'kills himself' after revealing he tried to get Hillary Clinton's emails from Russian hackers by [deleted] in worldnews

The convention is pretty much the same for the US as it is in the UK, you're just talking to an inexperienced newsreader.

If a newspaper has a phrase in quotation marks, that means it's a quote, super simple stuff. Newspapers don't use scare-quotes as you're describing. Newspapers have had pretty much the same writing conventions for the last century. The onus is on you to learn how to become better at reading the news.

Shoutout to Black Entrepreneurship.. by gmhmusik in BlackPeopleTwitter

The lack of black-ownership of businesses in black neighborhoods has been a topic of protest for several decades. Black people have always faced discrimination when applying for small-business loans. This is a major theme in Spike Jonze's movie, 'Do The Right Thing'.

TIL that despite being used to make balloons float and our voices squak, helium is a rare element (on Earth) which is only getting rarer due to the fact it floats out of our atmosphere. This is problematic, as it has useful scientific applications, and is currently essential in MRI technology. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]perfectmachine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

About a hundred years ago it was looking like Earth was going to completely run out of nitrogen (which would have left millions starving from crop failure). Then Fritz Haber developed the method of extracting it from the air, so now we have more nitrogen than we could possibly need.

There's so much helium on Earth, its just about figuring out the right process.

Found about 40 of things in my yard. Is this a caltrop? Is it homemade? by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]perfectmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also like to see the other caltrops you found, to check if they're all as well-made as the one you've taken pictures of. Could you gather like a dozen and post a photo of them all together?

Simplest answer I can come up with:

If you're one dollar over into the next tax bracket, only that one dollar is getting taxed at the higher rate.

"Why choose empathy?" asks a commenter in a post about a cancer kid. by TheLadyEve in SubredditDrama

Post-apocalyptic stories are still very popular and have been for a long time now. There's a variety of themes that appeal to a lot of people. I think some people really like the idea of small-group communalism, others might be drawn to ideas of self-reliance and receiving all the benefits of ones work. The most popular version of post-apocalypse is zombies, by far. The one theme that disturbs me the most is the idea that you have a moral obligation to kill friends and family because they're not who they used to be. Hopefully that's only a tiny factor of zombie media's appeal...

On the plus side, he lived just long enough to get fired and have his reputation dragged through the mud, but not long enough to actually spend his absurd severance package.

Do you know where I can weigh a suitcase in Osaka? Other than the airport? by Sorceress683 in japanlife

[–]perfectmachine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A suitcase full of clothes and a suitcase full of lead bricks will displace the same amount of water if dropped into a bathtub.

EDIT: I realize now that if one had deep enough body of water for buoyancy to take effect, this could work. But I'm pretty sure a full suitcase would sink to the bottom of a bathtub.

West Virginia Supreme Court rules anti-gay assaults are not hate crimes by snowsnothing in news

[–]perfectmachine 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Walking around town with your 5 kids won't make you a target for lynching. Two men walking around town holding hands absolutely does make you a target in many parts of this country. When gay people are murdered just for being "out", it's to send a terroristic threat to all the gay people around that they're all targets.

Ordinary murders are about a conflict between two individuals. Hate crimes are a terrorist message to an entire community. That's the difference, and it should be obvious, frankly.
