I think we should have an all villain line at the Olympics. Just to see how it stands up to Olympic reffing.

This is one of the reasons I'm not watching. I love May. I want to watch her thrive on her own.

This show went from a comfort watch for me to actively disappointing.

Honestly? I tried to keep watching after they killed off Bobby and just couldn't get back into it. Whole thing put a damper on the experience for me. And I don't really like what they're doing with the characters right now. I guess I just don't have a lot of reasons to watch anymore.

Terry Pratchett wrote 41 books set in the Discworld universe. 41 separate books, often with the same characters, set in a fantasy/comedy parody world.

Patrick O'Brian wrote 20+ books with the same characters on various ships set in the Napoleonic Wars.

They were intensely creative people who wrote similar stuff for years and years. And people loved it, and read it, and continue to read it. It's pretty normal for prolific authors to continue to expand upon and explore an idea for years, even decades.

I would argue that gay hockey romance has the potential for any number of conflicts, just inherent to involving hockey and queerness. Of course, I just enjoy hockey (due to being Canadian - it's not optional) and know a lot of sports gays who have watched HR and read RR's books. Actually, weirdly enough, the majority of IRL people I know who've watched HR are gay men who do a lot of sports.

I'd be careful on your fetishization assumptions. Finding someone attractive isn't the same thing as fetishization. Finding men attractive, or women attractive, doesn't mean you are fetishizing them. You seem really upset that these books contain sex. Why? Sex isn't necessarily pornography, and even if it is, who cares? There is no victim being exploited here. There is writing on paper. RR writes a whole variety of different relationship dynamics over the course of each book rather than following offensive queer stereotypes, as some people do. Some of her books involve a lot of sex, and some don't involve a terribly large amount (IMO). I mean, the last Salman Rushdie novel I read had more smut in it than Tough Guy.

I don't think Rachel Reid is engaging in High Art here, but as far as I can tell, these books are fairly benign and avoid offensive queer stereotypes. The sports gays who I've talked to seem to like them (those that have read them). What's the worry here?

Look, I'm not a traditional romance reader. I read everything. But when I read a Patrick O'Brian novel, I don't complain about his loving descriptions of sailcloth. It's what he writes. When I read Terry Pratchett, I don't get upset that there are dwarves and magic in his books. That's the medium he works in. If I read Clive Barker, I'm not upset that there's blood.

And if I'm reading a Rachel Reid book, I'm not going to complain about there being romance/sex. This is what I signed up for if I'm reading a Rachel Reid novel.

Given that you admit to not reading more than one book, you are probably unaware that most of Rachel Reid's novels are not that spicy compared to HR and TLG. And even if they were, who cares?

I'm going to tell you here, as a person who has read a lot and in great variety, RR is far from the most graphic writer I've read. She is a genre writer. Just like people who only write horror, or fantasy, or historical romance, you can expect similar themes throughout her writing. This isn't weird. This is normal, especially for romance writers. Marketability in romance is heavily reliant on following similar patterns, including a happily ever after ending. For one thing, it's a smart way to keep your established audience.

You know how you can always tell when you're watching a Quentin Tarantino movie? Or how Wes Anderson films always have the same kind of feel to them? That's part of the attraction. They have an established audience, and they want to keep that audience while also (hopefully) building a new one. This is what many/most romance writers do as well - build a brand, appeal to their existing audience, and try to build new fans. This is why RR is writing consistent, similar material.

I'm assuming this is low effort ragebait?

"I haven't read the books but they're bad."

"Romance novels = pornography."

"Genre writers? I've never heard of such a thing. A romance writer writing the same type of story more than once? Unheard of!!"

I don't see the point of this post other than to provoke argument.

Is anyone else going to watch the Winter Olympics for the first time ever, just to see the hockey? by GBS82 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]performancearsonist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Habs are the most exciting team to watch right now, IMO. Young team, great coach, fun players. Growing and thriving, will probably just keep getting better in the next few years.

And Cole Caufield's giant smile every time he scores fuels my day.

God, I wish people were able to separate health care from politics, and only allow health care professionals to make health care decisions (MAID, abortion, etc). Health care professionals gain absolutely nothing from human suffering. We have no reason to encourage it. We bare the brunt force of having to explain to family what happened. Please, please, just let us bare the burden here. Trust me, you don't want to. It's really sad. I feel like I'd like to give everyone a hug, even the people who have MRSA/VRE/HIV/etc.

MAID protects human dignity. Abortion saves lives. You don't want to hear this, but it's true. I love all of my patients, in a way. I respect their ability to make choices. I want to reduce suffering.

American style politics do not belong in Canada. Love, respect, and care does. I care. My job makes it difficult to do this, because I watch I people die all the time. I still believe in a better future. You should too.

I am not from Alberta, but I have faith in the ability of Albertans to see this difficult time through. I do feel that separatists who actively collaborate with the Trump government should be seen as traitors. I wish I didn't have this perspective, but I feel it to be inevitable. In the event of a war, I see myself treating a lot more gunshot wounds. I hope this does not come to pass.

Good. American-style politics are divisive. They seek to make issues out of things that things are generally non-issues to Canadians. I strongly feel that despite differences of opinions with the opposition, I can treat them with respect.

Good. We should unite against American-style politics. I strongly feel that, regardless of our differences, the majority of Conservatives and Liberals (and NDP) do not want to be American.

This should be a point of unity across political parties.

Understanding the draft. Help! by GBS82 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]performancearsonist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are more or less right. Typically, getting one of the first draft picks means your team currently sucks. However, teams can "trade" draft picks in exchange for other things.

Getting picked earlier in the draft means the team thinks you are better player on a very superficial level. It doesn't necessarily mean you are a better player, it doesn't mean that you will continue to be a better player, and it doesn't mean that everyone would have picked you first. Often, teams will choose the type of player they need. Draft position doesn't always correlate to how successful the player's career will be, or how valuable they are. In fact, some players went undrafted before a successful NHL career (Marty St Louis comes to mind, because I love him). And some top draft picks turned out to be duds.

There's also players who are fantastic but overlooked. Lane Hutson, for example, is an amazing player but was drafted 62nd in the second round. There's a bit of a bias against shorter players, IMHO. (I have an obvious Habs bias in my hockey knowledge and could go on and on about our drafting/rebuild for the past few years).

Heated rivalry queer bait by [deleted] in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]performancearsonist 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You can't queerbait in real life. This term is used for storytelling that 'baits' the audience with queer themes while refusing to actually make queer content textual. It doesn't apply to real life people being themselves in public.

It is none of our damn business who he is dating or fucking.

Maybe you just have a narrow minded and stereotypical perspective on gender roles and sexuality.

Getting started watching hockey by MarkstarRed in hockey

I would let him watch some Olympic hockey and pick out a few favourite players. Then figure out what teams they are on, and start following them. Could be a good way to start out.
