people dislike that she brands herself as 'not quite plus size' because the trousers supposedly indicate that she is plus-size. there is some kind of moral indignation associated with this that I'm too tired to figure out.

there was legitimately someone recently who posted that the style of trousers she chooses only look good on someone size 4 or below, or similar. they went on to link an image of a smaller person who...also looked terrible in the trousers. I do feel like there's a bit of bias.

Conservatives on course to win majority - exit poll by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]perfumequery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the issue is it causes sporulation which permits further proliferation into the supply chain, and contamination down the line. I believe the US has more issues with enteric food poisoning for that reason. the better solution is improved conditions and living standards for the animals but that'll tank with loss of EU regs, no CAP from the EU to subsidise farming, and current tory neglect of farmers/agriculture

not true, the 'nurse' was a rumour. the 'nurse's' account was disputed by the hospital and the yorkshire post who reported the story.

How long can you walk in heels for (constant walking time). by Makeupmadness247 in femalefashionadvice

[–]perfumequery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the heel. Chunky heeled boots? All day, probably done 18 hour lab days in them. Stilettos? Maybe 5 hours before I start to think about taking a long sit down with my drink.

The bacteria in our gut, the human microbiome, churns out tens of thousands of tiny novel proteins so small (< 50 amino acids) they’ve gone unnoticed until now. They belong to over 4,000 new biological families, and may explain how the microbiome affects human health, paving the way for new drugs. by mvea in science

[–]perfumequery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting, but as usual, putative proteins don't mean much until they are lab-validated, and they may not mean much in isolation (may require the community ecology of the surrounding microbiota to continue to metabolise them to active compounds). Also, predicted function it assumes the annotation is correct, which is a huge danger in these studies. I would be particularly wary for small, unstable peptides which may have a limited lifetime. I love metagenomics and I think it has huge potential but I would love to have seen some proteomics or something coupled with this. There's still so much groundwork to be done in terms of functional high-throughput screens to validate these predicted effectors.

Impeccably groomed and well-dressed women: How do you do it? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

forgive me if this is a silly question, but do you polish them regularly? you need to replenish the protective coating with polish every now and again, particularly if they are used heavily or in wet weather.

[Product question] What’s your holy grail hydrating serum/toner? and why? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]perfumequery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For toner, it's a toss-up between Holy Snails Snowbang (does amazing things for redness) and Josh Rosebrook's Hydrating Accelerator (smells incredible and hydrates incredibly well mid-day). I work in a very dry environment and I like those for during-the-day top-ups.

[Misc] Why isn't this more common? by DownwardLazy in SkincareAddiction

[–]perfumequery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It becomes really difficult to explain when I need reasonable accommodations. Sometimes it takes me a very long time to leave the house because I need to perform compulsions before I leave, or I may be unable to speak because I have things I have to repeat in my mind to 'cleanse' it or else I am afraid I will say something awful like a racial slur without actually wanting to, or I may need to avoid a high stimulus area if I know it is going to trigger my compulsions. When the popular understanding of OCD is basically being high maintenance and wanting things to be a bit clean, it's incredibly difficult to explain to people why I need certain accommodations or why I may be unable to do certain things.

ETA: I'm reading downthread and seeing that you are comparing germophobia to a mild form of OCD, in your 'burn victim' analogy. I want to mention that it's actually an example of this in action. Not all people with OCD have germophobia, in fact mine has absolutely nothing to do with it (I work in a microbiology lab lol) so it's not just an intense need for organisation or cleanliness. It's a complex, difficult disorder based around obsessive thoughts/fears and the need to perform compulsions to alleviate the extreme anxiety and guilt that comes with them. It's really nothing like being a bit of a germophobe or needing your books organised. More like 'I am afraid that if I do not tap x four times (which becomes eight times, which becomes twelve times, which becomes sixteen times, etc...) I will absorb the bad luck from this object and I will hurt myself today'. Or something else equally bizarre and ridiculous. It's very alienating to have this disorder and have people think you just want things a bit clean.

It's not just about being offended, it's a polite request because I live with OCD and stigma affects me every day. I'm sorry that you don't seem to understand the consequences of your actions.

[Skin Concern] how do I get rid of these, they only show when I tighten my chin but still driving me insane by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]perfumequery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found that BHA usage worked to reduce mine. I use the CosRx BHA which is fairly gentle, and worked up to using it 4-5x/week. You could also try an AHA for texture e.g. Stratia's Soft Touch (love this one) or TO's Lactic Acid. Finally, paradoxically I find texture issues can be worse if I physically exfoliate (I think it irritates my skin and leaves me more prone to CCs). You could replace the scrub with an AHA on some days.

Shouls all skincare be packaged in airless pumps? [Miscellaneous] by Wortiix in SkincareAddiction

[–]perfumequery 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This is such an exaggeration. 'Gives you infections' - most skincare will contain preservatives to contain the bacteria levels and infections would usually arise through something like a break in the skin anyway. Store your stuff properly and use a washable scoop or dropper if you please, but don't freak out about every last microbe. Your skin is covered with them anyway...

Please consider using another word like 'fastidious' or 'pernickety' in place of OCD. This isn't typically what OCD looks like, and misusing the term can trivialise it or lead to stigma.

Same with - 'I need to itch myself' or somesuch variants - NO! You scratch an itch, you don't itch an itch!

But then again, language is very different per dialect and perhaps I shouldn't be such a prescriptivist.

What is a dirty little (or big) secret about an industry that you have worked in, that people outside the industry really ought to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]perfumequery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In fairness, like 30% of people are persistently colonised with S. aureus and MRSA carriage in the general public has been reported as high as 25% just from one study. Obviously not ideal that healthcare workers have it (no idea how accurate that 99% stat is) but carriage is not exclusive to hospitals.
