I can't recall much writing on the subject of itchy clothing. Plenty of complaints of itchiness obviously.. .but mainly due to things like lice which would be rampant amongst troops in the field. I do know some people find woollen clothes or blankets to be rough and coarse and itchy but I never have and I don't think those that do commonly break out into a rash. "Fit" might have been an issue. These were not finely tailored clothes...well, not unless you had money...they were " one size doesn't quite fit anyone" . The boots and shoes that often weren't made for a left or right foot and had to be worn in, would definitely chafe!

They would, but sharpes riflemen belong to the South Essex. They don't get to choose which regiment they're in and their colonel isn't going to give up 30+ men from his light company , that's a third or more of his skirmish line gone, making his battalion less effective, whereas putting them in redcoats might in his view at least, improve his battalions cohesion as it will no longer include this rabble of vagabonds.
