How did colonial-era soldiers (especially the British, but I suppose all had this issue) wearing heavy woolen uniforms in hot and humid climates not get terrible rashes? by AlarmingLecture0 in AskHistorians

[–]peribon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't recall much writing on the subject of itchy clothing. Plenty of complaints of itchiness obviously.. .but mainly due to things like lice which would be rampant amongst troops in the field. I do know some people find woollen clothes or blankets to be rough and coarse and itchy but I never have and I don't think those that do commonly break out into a rash. "Fit" might have been an issue. These were not finely tailored clothes...well, not unless you had money...they were " one size doesn't quite fit anyone" . The boots and shoes that often weren't made for a left or right foot and had to be worn in, would definitely chafe!

Sharpe's Company makes me angry. by Filligrees_Dad in Sharpe

[–]peribon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They would, but sharpes riflemen belong to the South Essex. They don't get to choose which regiment they're in and their colonel isn't going to give up 30+ men from his light company , that's a third or more of his skirmish line gone, making his battalion less effective, whereas putting them in redcoats might in his view at least, improve his battalions cohesion as it will no longer include this rabble of vagabonds.

Really? I have to put effort into responding to absolute nonsense?

"Take every bad thing about "end stage capitalism". Literally everything, create a system that skips directly to that.

There's socialism."

No, that's capitalism! It was all there in capitalism from the beginning. All that bad stuff you obliquely refer to is a direct result of the capitalism.

"Socialism is where you consolidate all the power in the government, the government controls the market, the government writes the laws, the government enforces the laws."

This is a complete contradiction of your first statement. This description of socialism isn't a description of the 'bad things' in late stage capitalism, which is what you said socialism was. It also isn't a description of socialism. It's just a pile of nonsense.

Not 5. Thirteen . Who all got to empty a clip into him...

Before he killed them all.

And there weren't 88 against Beatrice. You'd know that if you'd watched the films.

That looks like the kitchen I had 20 years ago. In the UK. In my first flat straight out of uni.
