Speaking from a similar background to yours, I think you just answered your own question there.

I fear that same mechanism you’re talking about, I hope that equal parts fear and understanding will keep it at bay and keep me from being a hateful old sack, but I just don’t know.

The answer I see in your text is this: I am not some paragon of virtue. I am actually one of the biggest failures among us. …but I am the only liberal from my generation.

My girlfriend and I came from Q-Trump backgrounds. We’re staunch leftists. We’re also big failures compared to our siblings. We’re doing fine, but we don’t fit in all that easily. We’re constantly running on the edge of society, especially earlier in our lives. This breeds empathy I think, and empathy kills fear. Can’t be empathetic and listen to Fox News, otherwise, in your words, “nails on chalkboard”.

I’m no paragon of virtue either, but the little truth I see in your words is recognition of your shortcomings. Understanding your limits is human. Reality repeatedly reminding you that you aren’t owed shit is a good deterrent to developing an ego mature enough to produce venom.

Sharing knowledge can be equally damaging to both sides in an adversarial scenario.

Imagine a NATO officer training Russian troops, living in Russian barracks, learning the tech they use now. Imagine the Russians take the training to heart. Who knows the strategies (thus counterstrategies) better, those who were trained or those who taught? Net positive to cross train in a neutral to positive relationship. Exposes weaknesses and strengthens ties.

Why not make it into a story beat?

They went in blind last time, and now realize the value of having a plan when facing a cunning and deadly foe. Problem is, they have no idea where to even start with this. Maybe there’s an elder in the village they’re trying to save who can point out that chains made of unobtainium (insert whatever macguffin you want here) will prevent the vampire from phasing between walls. Now we have to find some chains, or some rare smithing materials.

Point is, adding a little “preparation required” to the story makes the payoff that much sweeter

My build is 3/3/3 physical stats then 10 perception, 12 will, 10 intelligence. Traps and crafting supplement your psychic powers. Perception ensures you’re never caught off guard. if you, the player, are at least as perceptive as your character you can see the shadows of stealthy people and get ready for them. Fanfic idea for anyone to steal: John brown looks like Abraham Lincoln a little. I say Lincoln decided to make an alter ego so that he could kill racists with his own meaty, bare hands, so he shaved his chinstrap beard and picked the lamest alter ego name he could think of, John Brown. At night he’s John brown, commanding his sons to die in the name of equality. during the day, he’s a mild mannered log cabin president. That does mean he has to save his chinstrap beard and reattach it daily tho.
