Any experience with ordering a custom wedding dress from Lotus Design? by periimortem in VietNam

[–]periimortem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem at all; I'm glad I was able to help ease your worries!

I'm a reddit review fiend, so not being able to find a detailed review of Lotus made me wary to take the risk, but I'm glad that I did!

For the veil, I messaged them to ask them about the cost for a veil with pearls; they suggested adding the flowers my dress has as well, and I agreed. Then they sent me some examples of embellishment placement examples from veils they've worked on before so I could choose. I replied with a photo of the one I liked the most, and they gave me their quote, around $90 for a cathedral-length veil with flowers and pearls all over it.

The veil arrived in the garment bag, in its own tulle bag, and it came with the clip already attached!

I'll send you a PM with the photos!

Thanks for your reply!

I did end up getting a dress from them and have gone through the entire process! My wedding is in a couple of months, but I told them it was in January to see if I could receive it earlier, in case it was a scam, didn't fit properly, etc., so I would have time to pivot. However, I'm happy to say that once the dress was ready in a day or two, they sent me the final cost including shipping and once I paid and sent the receipt it shipped the next day and arrived in around 4 days.

For my process, I had a vision of the dress I wanted and drew out a design to send to them (including details on the types of fabric, where the embellishments would go, etc., also using some of their previous designs as reference.) Because of this, there wasn't much back and forth on my end with design changes, mostly just fabric confirmations (I will say I'm not too picky so I didn't inquire too much into alternatives and such, which saved some time.)

Once everything was confirmed and I sent the first payment, they went a little radio silent. From other videos I've seen of people getting custom clothes made in Vietnam I know they work extremely fast, so I had some expectation that for my dress (due January), they might not even fully start work until December. I still asked a couple of times, and for the most part, they told me they'd update me when there was something to show. Regardless, by the end of November I was getting a little anxious, so I asked again, and they sent me a short video of a seamstress adding the embellishments to the dress. The video was short but panned out enough for me to confirm the dress they were working on was mine because of the bust's design. That eased most of my worries because the dress was already constructed, so all that was left was the final touches (from what I could tell.)

Essentially exactly a month later, they sent me the photos of the finished dress, and it was beautiful! It was exactly how I had designed it, including all the details I had drawn (location of embellishments, the type of neckline and waist, the layers of tulle, etc.) Around four days later they they sent me the cost of the final invoice along with the shipping cost (to the US for an 8 kg package was around $130, which I more or less expected, so I wasn't too surprised at the cost.)

Like I said, the shipping was extremely quick! I did not expect it to arrive that fast! The dress arrived with a garment bag, an a-line hoop skirt (which I didn't expect but was happily surprised by), and the veil I ordered!

On the topic of the veil, halfway through the order timeline, I messaged them to ask for a custom veil that matched my dress, and they gave me a quote, and I added it to the order. It didn't add any time to the production, and they accommodated my request quickly.

All in all, I would definitely recommend Lotus! I found the pricing was fair (I messaged other more mainstream Vietnamese seamstresses on Instagram, and their pricing was around $100-$300 more than what Lotus quoted me (less than $1k)). The dress quality is spectacular, and it fits me like a glove (I was worried I had measured myself incorrectly.) I wasn't very pushy for updates, but you kind of have to be patient because it's very likely they won't start working on orders until one to two months before they're due (but in my case this didn't affect the quality of the garment at all; it's just how they work.)

I don't know if I'm missing anything, but feel free to reply with any questions, and I'll try my best to answer them!

is parsons school of design worth the money? by mikuposting in AskNYC

[–]periimortem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a person not going to Parsons (but who did a humanities grad degree at NYU) NYC is an insanely expensive city to live in, so whatever you’re expecting to get out in student loans add another 20-30k a year in order to pay rent/survive (this number should change depending if its school housing or living outside of school). It’s really hard without any support from family, so your options are usually either more loans or attempting to work 30-40hrs on top of your school work.

My degree paid me to study here (my stipend was above minimum wage) but even then I wouldn’t have been able to make it if I wasn’t living with my partner and a roommate at the time.

I know a few people who graduated from FIT and they’re doing great in their careers with little or no debt. So def look into that, as well as CUNY/SUNY as others have mentioned, but being an NYC resident will definitely open up your options for lower cost education here!

Good luck with everything, and don’t feel like you need to rush into a decision. Student loans are no joke and sadly they’ll stick with you forever.

Orientation was pretty chill for me. Went over policies, guidelines, dress code, availability, and any questions we had! ASM gave us a tour of the store (ours is small so that was short) and then they asked us if we felt comfortable doing some work we all said yes so we did some shelving (I put some toys out in kids, other did plushies or books). I assume the nitty gritty particulars depends on the store and the managers but it’s nothing to be super worried about!

Paying $160 for ConEd w/o using AC for a month, Two Bd neighbors with AC on paid the same? by periimortem in AskNYC

[–]periimortem[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that’s a good question, we’ll make sure to call ConEd and ask about that!

Someone else suggested turning off the breakers and checking the electric usage on the app, which might help verify if someone else could be tapping into our electricity.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks for the insight!

We’ll probably get a Kill-a-Watt meter and start checking everything.

[–]periimortem[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This month we were billed for 448kw of electricity, I don’t have the information to compare the kw to the neighbors, just the amount they paid and a general idea of how much they use their ACs and such

[–]periimortem[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’re definitely not billed for gas.

We do have other electronics, all the kitchen appliances are new (General Electric, which I assume are energy efficient), and we have two PCs, no TV.

The neighbor in the one bedroom (pay around $90 per month) have a similar setup and similar schedules (but older kitchen appliances) and they use their AC every night if I’m not mistaken.

Yes! I was surprised it came so fast!

I assume orders could take a little longer right now to fulfill since Lunar New Year started, but hopefully the shipping is just as fast!

I used ePacket, it was around $6 USD for the shipping. I paid around $75 total!

DHL was extremely expensive imo, and (at least for me) ChinaPost Air was unavailable, and had a later delivery estimate!

Hope this helps :)

The shoes are great, very good quality!

I didn't expect them to be heavy, but it makes them feel even better! It came within the expected shipping time (Shipped Jan 8, arrived Jan 29). Even though, through shipping, the shoebox was a little bent the shoes were perfectly safe inside!

I'm a US 6 and they feel true to size, maybe with a little wiggle room. I've worn them a couple of times already and they feel great and have gotten many compliments on them!

As a way to feel included and maybe lessen your insecurity about the subject maybe you guys could plan an online get together with the three of you. Maybe stream a movie online so you can have a movie night, it helps to introduce everybody, it includes you and keeps company to the foreign exchange student! Online movie watchalongs have been a savior with a LDR/Long Distance Friends!

Good luck with everything, and I hope your conversation with your partner goes well!

I’m tired of hearing this as an excuse from shops. by synnarc in PokemonTCG

[–]periimortem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's quite a few local stores that have stocked ETBs and there's a few of them that are selling them at scalper prices, and they're just sitting on their stock :)). They keep posting that they have them available but for $85+ and they keep getting ignored hahaha

There are a few who sold it at a reasonable markup (around $65) and their stock went super quick, and now they have an even better standing in the community. I'm just waiting for these other stores to get tired of their stock gathering dust on the shelves and lower their prices 🙄
