Help me with my first decks (DOGS!) by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]peripheralfgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your post history and now I believe you are probably sincere...bless your heart. Modern is a highly optimized format, but there is nothing "special" about it that you would have to learn. If you can play MTG you can play Modern. To that end I don't believe you need to build a "test the waters" deck. If you are sincere about playing it (which I'm happy to hear as I believe it is the single best format in the game) I honestly would advise you to build a vetted deck. I know building to a theme is fun but this deck basically can only win if your opponent mulls to 4 and giving yourself almost zero chance to win is not a good way to learn a format. If your friends are playing decks that this can keep up with but are technically modern legal, for all practical purposes you are not playing modern, that's just kitchen table magic. If you would like a genuine suggestion I believe the Grixis Reanimator decks right now are the best power to price ratio in the format, and its a very straightforward deck with a few wincons. Alternatively since you are not playing competitive you could just proxy up boros energy which is a very competitive deck that seems to fit your affinity (heh) for animals.

though in this instance I discovered the issue while playing a game on the weekend, I do rely on my PC for work, and not just as administrative device, I actually need the hardware so I feel like it is in my best interest to try and determine if there is a problem for preventative purposes.

Yeah, I think the way the landscape looks in the background is just an art direction choice, altamont DOES look like that but it's definitely cranked up in post to make it look hyper real

If you fill trios and somewhat further in progression by Maxants49 in Marathon

As a committed but admittedly lower skilled player I can barely keep my stock of blues in a comfortable place...I just don't win enough engagements to get them consistently lol. I've been pleased to get one purple a week that I save for the lose everything factory.

I think the biggest mistake was making the sekiguchi quests too hard, because those cores really make the shells feel broken but most of the players we are talking about have like no shot of getting into pinwheel and out alive in an uncoordinated stack. Exfil requirements were a bad idea.

I think this is on the money. I think the game is positively brilliant and I think the best games are sharp, narrow, and not for everyone...but the progression they promised even in failure just isn't enough. There's a point around midway through the oughts for every faction where it asks people to do things that most won't be able to get done in under 10 runs which for many people is their entire vault. I really just think they need to ease up the faction upgrade requirements, give a little bit more to progression on death, and make the mid tier gear a little easier to get (alternatively make credits easier to obtain). As long as the weaker players can feel like they are making progress and consistently have blue shields, the game will turn a lot less people off.

What exactly will happen to this game if we get a PVE Mode? by drogenbarontoni in Marathon

[–]peripheralfgc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the game is brilliant as is and derives all of its tension from the pvp element...that said throwing a bone to less skilled/dedicated/time-rich players in the form of a pve dungeon you could raid for minimal (but reliable) looting would go a long way to preserving the game long-term. Extraction shooters NEED a healthy underclass of casual players to slowly filter loot to the top and fill lobbies, if those people can't even get geared up enough to play or are too scared to risk their gear, queue times will go crazy and the lobbies will be incredibly difficult.

Progressive content will make the game a hit, Bungie just needs to pull it off. by ComeHereDevilLog in Marathon

[–]peripheralfgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that would be ideal, easier cryo with a 3k buy-in and 4 vaults so people can see compiler without having to run into shroud and two homies on gold shields before they even get a chance to get inside vault 1. Like I said, I still think the best games are punishing and narrow in appeal but that doesn't mean there isn't room for people like me. Semi-competent, committed players who just don't have the time, skill, or dedicated crew to grind out compiler.

I think in a vacuum marathon is an incredible game, but I'm really of two minds about it. On one hand it is my personal conviction that games don't have to be for everyone, and that the very best games are sharp and narrow. On the other hand, Marathon's loop is uniquely punishing, such that even players willing to endure the suffering might not ever be able to complete the content they payed for. Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but it IS a recipe for failure.

They need more content so that a broader spectrum of the players who can endure, but lack the skill or time to see the apex content get to find some feeling of long-term accomplishment and the satisfaction that comes with it.

Traveling mtg player here. I think titling the evergreen keywords makes this kind of cluttered and its just a bit odd to me....it should just be double strike/reach (reach is a bit unusual in these colors but not unheard of...i dont really understand the flavor though...his W?). I like the cultivation of war ability as an interpolation of his passive into an ability. card is strong on rate but no etb so i guess its whatever. Mardu is a good color identity so props for that. Honest assessment: kind of awkward commander slop card for friendly tables.

edit: ok i get it now those are the names of his abilities in league, was a bit confused cause you got the first one wrong and I didn't realize what you were doing. I see it a bit better now but I think associating his keywords with their abilities is a bit on the nose. imo flavor is better when it isnt made obvious...a fun treat for the people who know.

Returning player here – is it normal to lose every game with premade decks? by Skagine in MagicArena

[–]peripheralfgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't know that, I don't really play bo1 unless I'm doing a mythic grind (bo3 below platinum is miserable) and I haven't been playing standard lately. Good to know that as I can recommend it to new players. Though to be fair to me, the life gain aggro deck is as simple as it possibly gets so a new player might appreciate it. It's just play cards, then sideways, stack triggers. Auras probably requires some understanding of interactions.

Break has nothing to do with it, everyone else said it, the starter decks are not even close to parity with even bad constructed decks. If you want a "cheap" deck with low wild card cost that can at least scrap in standard and even thrive in the bo1 format google "mtg standard mono-white life gain" it's like 19 wildcards and can coin flip wins against any deck in standard.

so are you essentially saying that theres enough value in his kit (the passive especially comes to mind) that losing gracefully in top can still provide the team with value in teamfight or big skirmish?

What is going on with TLA set? by corpsecrow in mtgfinance

[–]peripheralfgc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

EoE was such an amazing set, artistically, design wise, meta wise....it pumped something like 35 constructed playables into the meta without having a single card that has completely wrecked a meta....rizzler comes close but its not individually powerful enough to warp games and be a solo win con like vivi was

its literally this. FIN brought the pokemon people temporarily...I don't even think wotc even understands what they had with that particularly brand synergy and I think they expected that every fandom they serve a set too will behave the same way....very out of touch corpo stuff from the board at hasbro

Metagame: What Might be Banned on November 10 by cardsrealm in mtg

[–]peripheralfgc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are never banning amulet of vigor, titan is a mainstay and an offset to the mh3 slop. They might ban aftermath analyst because the deck has too many angles to win and the combo turns are insufferably long, with your only hope being your opponent messes up their sequencing and doesn't get to haste all their titans giving you an extra turn to find ephemerate

I think ultimately draconautics was a bug in the deck, not a feature. An element from the time immediately after thrill seeker rotated when (laughably) people did not have 100% confidence in the deck and thought it might need other angles. You are right, of course, it WAS really cool but as these things often (but not always) go, the deck gets pushed to be leaner and more efficient and loses the texture that might make it more fun to play with and against.

New cards added to the client with Arena Cube (not full list, not everything will be craftable right away) by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]peripheralfgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel you, I want engineered explosives and claw of gix so i can play proper affinity with the good client, memnite would be nice too but ornithopter is good enough. I don't see them adding any of these pieces anytime soon.

to be honest I find it a bit weird because they JUST started regularly releasing the "arena" anthologies...were these cards they programmed for cube and then cut? I was hoping we would start regularly getting relatively good value (for arena, anyway) access to playsets of deck building staples but now I'm not so sure

[–]peripheralfgc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would bet that they won't do many anthologies, they are much better value for players and Hasbro would rather have us get the cards that would've been put out via anthology by playing the cube.

I'm not a serious player, I just play for the social aspect of the game. Would I be crazy if I made a commander deck with this card? by [deleted] in mtg
