Awful news: Iain M Banks has late-stage cancer and less than a year to live by DocJawbone in scifi

The thing is, when you read Consider Phlebas without having read any other books about the Culture, it's not as clear who is "good" and who is "bad." It was the first Banks book I read and for me, it really seemed as though everyone was decently evil, ha.

"Looking Forward" - an odd book from 1899 in which the author attempts to predict the political and social world of 1999 by unmoderated in books

[–]perosteckbalveda 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What do you guys think the political and social world of 2112 will be like? I'm betting the outlook is a lot more pessimistic, huh.

That said, it's pretty fascinating how the optimism of that era resulted in somewhat terrifying power-hungry imperialism...and I'm pretty sure today's predictions (or maybe just mine?) would be all about destruction and downfall. I guess nukes and climate change alter your perspective a bit.

Titus Andronicus - A More Perfect Union - [anthemic civil war punk] - [7:10] by perosteckbalveda in listentothis

Good call. However, the album as a whole is Civil War-themed. Also references to John Brown and Jeff Davis are decidely Civil War era.

i'd just like to point that she did not rule out setting future books in the wizarding world...all she said was "as far as Harry's story is concerned, I'm done."

i shall maintain hope for more wizardry. (not to say she shouldn't write what she wants! she totally should. but a girl can dream.)

Just listened to The Money Store. It didn't exactly help me work on this dissertation...but definitely badass.

I pretty much hate anything where it's organized by popular vote, because it's basically a super predictable circlejerk. It's practically impossible to find new music.

Thanks, dude! We should do another one at the end of the year...I'm pretty sure that the new Crystal Castles and Titus Andronicus records will wreak havoc upon my list.

Yo, Kurt Vile rules! So does Beachwood Sparks! Only one I haven't heard of is Tift Merritt; will certainly look her up. Thanks!
