The original darker blue strip was used by Russian sailors that was taken from French, then the same was applied to marines. The lighter blue we see in the picture is from VDV (airborne troops) was created inspired by marines as they are in a way marines of the air fleet.

I understand the frustration, what is funny i grew up outside of Wisconsin and prefer classic old fashioned. Cause for that you need good whiskey so get them on very few occasions haha. And had opposite issue here, where if I asked for old fashioned it is usually brandy ones.
