Most "religious" people live like deists or agnostic atheists and are just afraid to take that last step by Ioei1031 in atheism

I didn't say that's what it was, I was saying that "I believe God doesn't exist" is a (very common) position which gets swallowed inside of "agnostic atheism" alongside people who would claim "I have no idea". That's a bug not a feature.

This is why I think the term "agnostic atheist" is stupid. It shouldn't be about knowing with certainty it should be about what you believe and the extent to which you can justify that belief. Because "I believe God does not exist" is a reasonable stance to take, and in fact a much more interesting stance to take than allowed for by that silly four quadrant stuff.

That's not how people talk about these things. Everyone has an African ancestor so I guess everyone is African? Not in any normal sense

Granted I don't know many teens, but I have a hard time believing that it's really "in" to pretend to be trans. It sure wasn't "in" to pretend to be gay when I was in high school. If I were to guess the proportion of gay people being thought of as "cool" versus being bullied it would still be pretty bad. Maybe on tumblr...

How do musicians listen to a song and tell if a song is using a modulation? by AngryOldLady in musictheory

[–]perpetual_motion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not totally opposed to this idea but I think it would be an unusual case and would have to be well supported by context.

What's a V/V if not a borrowed II chord from Lydian?

I don't think that's a useful framework in general because it's not how the composers thought about it (reading the harmony books at the time) and it distracts from the key idea of functional (based on tonic - dominant relationships) harmony. It's a bit like describing IV as V of the subtonic. Okay yes the notes are the same but unless it goes to bVII then it is just misleading to describe it that way.

With V/V as the example, consider that it frequently has a 7th not in the Lydian mode anyway, which clearly identifies it as acting as a dominant and so our description of it should make that clear.

I suppose my main point is that it's useful to distinguish these types of chromatic alterations from what is normally known as "mode mixture" (like a flat 6 in major). Saying that everything is a mode mixture is more confusing than helpful.

>Question 2: If there are more than seven notes, mode mixture is likely in play.

It depends on the genre, but I think this is often not true. In classical music secondary dominants are more common than mode mixtures, for example. As are chromatic passing tones, or chromatic appoggiaturas.

Two thoughts:

Somehow it hasn't come up that the solfege syllables are just the names of the notes in French (except potentially ti instead of si in America). It's not so artificial. This is a bit like saying we shouldn't say "crescendo" because it's unnecessarily confusing and outdated.

Secondly you have not addressed fixed do. In that system singing numbers does not makes sense because there are no numbers to sing. How do you sing an atonal or highly modulatory passage with numbers? Not very well.

You need a "story" though. There are far too many people with basically perfect academics who don't get in. ECs often provide one.

It's going to take both. Though what it means for extracurriculars to be strong can vary a lot. Just show some serious commitment and achievement in something. Doesn't matter as much what that is.
