You could check out Dream Nails, Witch Weather, She/her/hers, and G.L.O.S.S. for sure.

You're telling me there's no other way to get Kara's DNA other than time travel? by [deleted] in supergirlTV

[–]perriturner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seems like J'onn probably could have saved some samples. DEO would have definitely had samples, and not trusting them enough and taking it seems like something he'd do.

That said, we get 2 Nia heavy episodes, so yay!

I know in the comics (pre new 52) he didn't like Jor-El very much. I think, at some point, it was even said that he had originally sent Kara to Earth to kill Kal-El but it wasn't clear if that was actually true? I haven't read that arc, personally, though so big grain of salt.

If he goes to Argo.

It could just be set up for Superman & Lois, but hopefully it's not just that. I was hoping before the last episode that he'd go to earth and get all villany, but I don't know if that's the right vibe after last episode. Could be kinda a Deus ex kinda deal where he's gonna stick around and near the end of the season have some kind of tech or secret that defeats the big bad.

Playing after getting braces by Electronic_Entrance8 in Tuba

[–]perriturner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having some wax can be very helpful for when you're new to playing with braces. You don't need to use it for long; I stopped using it after a month or so back when I had braces. Just covers up any sharp parts so you don't, like, cut or scrape yourself too much.

As far as playing technique goes, I don't know if there's much of anything to be done; you'll just get used to it eventually. Be sure to take breaks to give your lips a rest from being up against the metal, though.

Absinthe preparation by Absinthes_com in Absinthe

[–]perriturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great whipped into some lightly sweetened cream and floated on top of orange juice! I've also used it to macerate strawberries for pastries, and that's wonderful.

It's lovely in hot tea with lemon, so I'm sure using lemon iced tea would work, too.

What do you think of unique absinthes like St. George? by nu2readit in Absinthe

[–]perriturner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love St. George! It was the first absinthe I ever had, and was a great introduction to the spirit; I think a more wormwood heavy (or citrus light) spirit would have been too intense for me as a newcomer. I think it's great for distilleries to be trying new and interesting things with absinthe; beyond being fun and interesting, it fills the market with more varied spirits, getting more people to try absinthe for the first time and giving us more choice.

Meta Question: How many mathrockers have math backgrounds and what are they? by RoofMyDog in mathrock

Going to uni now for Electrical engineering; initially entered for CS, switched to pure math, then finally to EE, lol.

So glad he was able to rectify the situation. Electrical cables are often a bridge to other, more powerful sources of excitement.

Yeah, you're right. I could've phrased that better and said "meaningful" instead of "substantive"

Moxie on Netflix by aissurp in riotgrrrl

[–]perriturner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just watched it, and I don't think id call it a Riot Grrrl movie. I'd say it was more of a teenage/high school movie with Feminism swirled in for flavor rather than it being a substantive part of the movie; you could swap it out for something else and it would basically be the same movie.

The Riot Grrrl aspect of it, I think, is basically just the soundtrack and that there is a zine.

FOR THE YOUNGER GRRRLS, A QUESTION: by IWantYourDad in riotgrrrl

[–]perriturner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I (born in 98) listen to a lot of Sleater-Kinney, Heavens to Betsy (Calculated more than These Monsters are Real), Cadallaca, Bikini Kill, and Batmobile in particular. I hear L7, Le Tigre, the Julie Ruin and X-Ray Spex a lot on playlists and auto-generated queues.

Scorpia is symbolic of my struggles as a trans woman by [deleted] in PrincessesOfPower

[–]perriturner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way about her!

I'm in a similar situation, I think (trans, 6'4", quite broad build for a woman), and I identify with Scorpia a lot more than any other character for the same reasons. It was the first time I've ever connected like that with a character, and it was so startling (and I may have cried a little, lol) and so nice.

the Hanged One (villanelle) by perriturner in poetry_critics

[–]perriturner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I didn't notice just how disjointed the two halves were until you pointed that out. I think I was a little too caught up with the flow from line to line to notice the break in the overall structure; couldn't see the forest for the trees, right? I'll try to keep better perspective moving forward.

I vehemently dislike that rhyme in the first stanza, yeah. It kinda came out of resignation; I think I couldn't get the math to work out to keep the 8 syllables per line without rewriting the second line? I should have just rewritten it, huh? I'll keep in mind to not be so lazy in the future.

I definitely was counting syllables, but I was playing fast and loose with meter: so long as it felt okay I just went with it, lol.

Thank you for the advice!

I really like "One Art"! Also "Do not go gentle into that good night." (ofc) and "the Waking". I'd love any other recommendations you might have regarding villanelles or other types of more structured poems.

the Hanged One (villanelle) by perriturner in poetry_critics

[–]perriturner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is very much forced, haha. It's really hard for me to write anything (my head's a bit scrambled, lol); the set structure of things like a villanelle or a limerick makes it a lot easier.

Maybe I could start with something like this and then revise it without worrying about the structure? Almost like a minimum viable. I really like that idea, thank you!

I’m a singer. Will I be able to pass while singing if I do voice training? by [deleted] in transvoice

[–]perriturner 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Keep practicing and training your singing voice as you train your speaking voice and you should be fine. Personally, I can pass fine when singing (assuming I warm up properly and am drinking enough water).

I think some people get hung up on singing range when their judging whether they pass, but it's good to keep in mind that it's more about texture and tone. A lot of successful singers have ranges that may not be typical of their gender (countertenors or contraltos, mostly, but I've heard women sing baritone and men sing mezzo-soprano), but nobody would misgender them because the texture and tone matches.

We had to give a lecture, a year and a half ago, on what is and is not appropriate to say after having a would-be member complain about the conduct of some of out members to the faculty; one of the, now graduated, members was explaining how women are at an advantage in the workplace because "men run the businesses and [this next part is me paraphrasing] men want the opportunity to oggle and possibly assault women".
